ANR without batteries!

Telex's latest headset builds on the tradition of the Airman 750—the most popular lightweight aviation headset in the world. The new Airman ANR 850 is the next generation, with advances in clarity, comfort and convenience. Don't forget the 850 is TSO'd for those operators that require the certification.

Clarity

The Airman ANR 850 adds up to 12dB of active noise reduction, specifically aimed at reducing wind noise in jet cockpits. An amplified electret mic provides the clearest communications and features a fully flexible boom.

Comfort

Weighing less than 4 oz., the Airman ANR 850 is the lightest headset available with ANR. And with new, larger ear cushions, you’ll hardly notice it’s there.

Convenience

The ANR feature is completely powered by mic bias, meaning absolutely no batteries and no panel installation—it’s hassle-free ANR. Also includes a “set and forget” volume control and a folding design that fits easily into the included headset case.

COnnection

The Airman 850 uses the standard PJ plugs also referred to as a twin plug. Without batteries and using only the PJ jacks the Airman 850 is able to provide noise reduction. Simple plug and play operation.

Telex 850
I tried Clarity Aloft and the light weight David Clark ANR’s, but my favorite is the Telex 850, no batteries needed, excellent performance, and also takes up the least amount of room in my flight bag. I fly the A321, GA airplane noise levels may require a different headset. The price is much better too!

Requested headset from airline pilot
This purchase was a gift to my son who is an American airlines pilot. He had requested this particular headset when I asked what he wanted for Christmas. He will be opening this gift on Christmas.

Not comfortable on my ear
It's a personal choice, I need a headset that covers my whole ear. Still a bit noisy in the cockpit for me with this on the ear style.

Great hassle-free overseas shipping
Replacement for my previous 850, decided to replace like for like as it works so well in the 777. Last one lasted me 9 years of intensive flying, pretty good run for a headset I reckon. Sporty's overseas shipping worked a treat, received my headset via courier within 5 days on the other side of the world. Very easy online ordering experience, highly recommended.

Perfect
In a cockpit of an executive jet, we do not need the large full ear coverage headsets, too large and not the most comfortable. This one is perfect as it allows the radio communication and one can hear when a flight attendant makes a request. Works well.

Pros: Lightweight and compact. ANR seems to work well in the CRJ flight deck. Cons: The headset cord is not as flexible and knots up more than other headsets that I have used. Overall, this headset works well in the CRJ 200/700.

Pros: Light, comfortable, takes up a very small amount of room in the flight case. Seems well made and durable, the ANR really helps, very clear microphone and speakers. Cons: High Volume function results in very high volume and the ANR "hissing" sound is really loud with the hot mic on. Low volume is sufficient even with ear plugs in the Q400 that I fly in. I'd say its tolerable to wear it without ear plugs, but when I use low DB, comfortable resusable ear plugs the setup is awesome. A bit on the pricy side, I plan to use it the rest of my career though.

Wondering if this headset is for boeing, needs two jacks, one small and one larger?

BEST ANSWER: Yes it will work with the configuration that your describing. Sounds like the Boeing your flying hasn't been modified by the purchasing airline to prevent their pilots and crews from stealing the headsets that are normally required operational equipment. Quick tips & the reason I choose this headset. The mic can be articulated so as to be on the outboard side weather you are flying left or right seat allowing you to slide the other earpiece just off your ear to better hear what might be happening on the flight deck. Additionally it has a high and low volume switch and an ANR on off switch on the mic bearing earphone. The volume switch has really helped me moving from jet to jet were the amplifiers have widely different settings. Being able to turn off the ANR when there was little need for communication on a long trip has really helped with fatigue. I hope this will help you get the best from your acquisition.
Operating instructions note there is a hole on both sides of microphone housing. One is blocked by foam. Do not use the side blocked by foam. After taking windscreen off one hole show some green “something” but it doesn’t look like “foam.” Other side hole just grey inside, which is hard to tell if it’s foam or not. Anyone have an answer?
