The most important hour in your logbook

“Pilots don’t crash airplanes because they want to,” says Collins, but even experienced pilots do. The best way to stay out of an accident report, he suggests, is to understand and manage the risks inherent in flying—every time you get in an airplane. In this engaging book, Collins shares some personal insights learned from his lifetime of flying in general aviation airplanes.

You’ll learn:

  • The three-word emergency checklist every pilot should know
  • Why a pilot’s thought processes matter more than his experience
  • Why Collins decided to stop flying as pilot in command—on his own terms
  • The unique challenges (and rewards) of night flying
  • Why some airplane types have poor accident records
  • How to manage technology in the cockpit, and when it’s doing more harm than good

Throughout, Collins uses real life examples from his vast experience to illustrate each point. This book is a must-have for any pilot who wants to make their next hour a safer one. Approx. 210 pages, soft cover.

Richard CollinsRichard Collins

For over 50 years, pilots have turned to renowned aviation journalist Richard L. Collins for his unique perspective on the challenges and rewards of flying light aircraft. With over 20,000 hours of real world experience, much of it in Cessna 172s and 210s, Collins writes about safety, weather, and air traffic control from first-hand experience. In his numerous books and videos, he shares the tried-and-true techniques and common sense lessons he's learned from the left seat.

Pros: I highly recommend this book to all pilots (an avaition buffs). It is a snapshot of the authors indepth approach to "Risk Mangement". His lifelong experience and "pearls-of-wisdom" alluded to in this book, are a benifit to all pilots. I plan on rereading it many times. This comes from an individual (me) who seldom reads books. It belongs in any pilots library! Cons: None. Totally enjoyed Richard's book. It brought back many of the foolish things I have done in attempt to build flight-time. REF

Pros: As usual, Richard provides us with much of the wisdom obtained in more than 20,000 hours of GA flying and hundreds of hours of accident research. Its a quick read with life saving advice and reminders of how to fly cross country safely.

Pros: Few pilots would disagree that it's best to learn from OTHER people's mistakes. This book does a great job at assembling stories from several areas in avaition that we can learn from. Cons: No pictures. The stories are great but when reading about airplanes and airplane accidents, pictures and illustrations would be nice. This book doesn't take a great deal of time to read and has lots of stories that we can learn from.

Pros: Author has incredible experience! Paperback keeps cost down. Cons: A little pricey for a paperback. I am really enjoying this book by Mr. Collins. I got back into flying about a year ago after a 30-year absence. I have especially enjoyed the chapters on accidents and engines.
