Sporty's Video Courses

Students accepted for flight instruction with Sporty's Academy must purchase and view the appropriate Sporty's Video Course before starting flight instruction.

Sporty's Complete Recreational Pilot and Private Pilot Video Course consists of four and six volumes respectively, with a total viewing length of over 14 hours. The course starts with the very first flight instruction and continues through to the Recreational Pilot and Private Pilot Knowledge and Practical Tests.

Sporty's Complete Instrument Rating Video Course consists of seven volumes for a total of 12 hours of viewing. Starting with instrument flying fundamentals the Instrument Rating Video Course takes the student through the Instrument Rating Knowledge and Practical Tests.

Closed Captioned

For students whose first language is not English, Sporty's Academy has "Closed Captioned" all of the video courses.

Before Starting Flight Instruction

Completing the Video Course and using the course study guide properly will give students a good start towards both the flight instruction as well as the Knowledge Test. The sequence of information in the video courses follows a logical progression toward the knowledge and practical portion of the test for the Recreational Pilot and Private Pilot Certificate or the Instrument Rating.

Video instruction enables the student to repeat and review by using the rewind feature of the video player. In many instances a student may have to view a portion of the video several times to fully grasp the concept being discussed. Viewing and reviewing the video provides the student with the basic knowledge.

Material for the knowledge test is covered as it relates to the subject being discussed. When presented in this manner the information makes sense rather than being an abstract concept.

Using the Video Preparing for Instructional Periods

In preparation for flight and ground instruction students are required to review video segments assigned by the instructor. With this preview of the lesson the student is able to better understand the preflight discussion with the instructor. Questions can be cleared up before starting the flight. Effectively, learning is accomplished on the ground. The airplane is used to practice what has already been learned. This reduces the time needed in the airplane and the cost of obtaining a pilot certificate or rating.
