    Active Noise Reduction (ANR)

    Active Noise Reduction (ANR)

Active Noise Reduction is a system of tiny microphones and speakers that listens to the ambient noise and electronically reduces it in the headset. ANR is particularly effective at cancelling low frequency noise (like engine noise,) and allows the headset to be both quieter and smaller than passive headsets. ANR headsets do require a power source, either battery or panel.

    DC Pro-X Review
    Pros

Lightweight, quality construction, semi-compact design, excellent warranty

    Cons

Bluetooth 'hiss', mic-boom is a little short

    General Comments

Overall a really good headset. As with any new headset it will take a little getting used to, especially if you are coming from an over-the-ear style.

I bought the Pro-X to replace the Telex 850 I had been using for the last 4 years. Have used the Pro-X for 15 hours now and am just finally getting used to the new feel. The ear cushions are plush and barely felt 'hot' after 4 hours of continuous wear. The cushions are larger and thicker than the Telex 850's and thus feel very pillow-like on your ears. With the ENC turned off the Pro-X is nearly as quiet as the Telex 850. With the ENC turned on the Pro-X is nearly as quiet as the Bose (dare I say). I fly the Embraer 175 jet, and the Pro-X's ENC does a great job of cancelling out the rumble, and cuts out a good amount of wind noise. You need to put your mike switch to cold in order to really appreciate how quiet the headset is, because the microphone tends to pick up some of that wind noise.

I have three gripes with this headset though: first is the length of the mic boom, it doesn't reach to the front of my lips so it feels awkward to speak into. Second is the Bluetooth; it has a noticeable 'hiss' sound when turned on. I haven't used the Bluetooth in flight, so I'm not sure if it will be as noticeable then. Finally, the head pad is a leathery material and as such tends to slide on the top of my head, so I find myself needing to readjust the placement on my head every so often. I am hoping that this will change once the head pad and ear pads break in with use.

    General Comments

I've been using the DC Pro-X headset for the last 80 hours of flying in the A-320 series and I'm very pleased with their overall performance. For the previous four years I'd been using the Telex Airman 850. I liked the 850's, but eventually decided that I wanted even more noise canceling capability as our fleet and my ears get older.

The DC Pro-X seems to be very sturdy and well made. The quality is everything that you would expect from David Clark. Although they are a little bit heavier than the Telex 850, I find them to be very comfortable on long flights. The ear pads are soft and comfortable, as is the head pad.

The control box is hefty, with a durable rubber cover over the buttons. The buttons have a solid feel, and there are independent volume controls that have a 'beep' in the associated ear to help with adjustment.

Battery replacement is easy. I'm only on my second pair of AA's, and I think I replaced them before I needed to so I don't have a clear idea of how long they will last. I'd guess about 50 hours of ANR usage if you're not using the Bluetooth a lot.

The Bluetooth is simple to set up and easy to use. It works great for phone calls. Also, I've experimented with using the Bluetooth to listen to music in flight and it sounds great. When there are radio transmissions the Bluetooth audio fades out and then back in again when transmissions are complete.

Microphone quality is excellent. The mic swings around approx 250 degrees, so it can be worn on either side.

I've read in other reviews that the head pad is thin and uncomfortable, and that you have to have the ear pads positioned carefully on your ears. In my experience, neither of these are an issue. I'm bald, and have worn these for 6 continuous hours without any discomfort. Also, I've experienced absolutely no difficultly in getting these placed properly on my ears.

I tried them in a 172 and they did a much better job than I was expecting. I could easily use them for a long flight in a piston powered plane. Although, the Lightspeed Zulu headsets I normally use are better suited to that type of flying.

I highly recommend ANR headsets to all airline and corporate jet pilots. They greatly reduce missed calls. Also, I find that I am much less fatigued after a long day when I've been wearing them.

I'm extremely happy with the DC Pro-X, and expect to get many years of use from them.

Solid headset at a fair price
    Pros

Excellent clarity, with good passive noise reduction, but superb hybrid noise cancellation.

    Cons

I find myself needing to adjust the headset for proper active noise cancellation performance.

    General Comments

I bought this product for myself hoping to find a good value for a student, but at the same time invest in a headset that would serve me well for years to come, and I think I've found it. While I could have probably found a very basic headset to get me going for now at a fraction of the cost, I don't regret my purchase and spending some extra money now at all, especially when it comes to protecting my hearing. I considered a variety of brands, having previously used a Bose headset and the DC H10-13X. This has all the features of a high-end headset for a price that's not much more than a basic hybrid noise canceling headset.

Even though finding the 'sweet spot' other reviews talk about takes some time and it feels like the headset will slide around, I find it actually rests rather comfortably on my ears, and doesn't move around much. Overall, I'm impressed by the headset's design, and it has all the features to satisfy my inner gadget-nerd.

    Great headset!
    Pros

Excellent comfort, great noise cancelling for the size/weight, bluetooth works very well, so far the battery life very good, as well

    Cons

    none so far

    General Comments

My Sennheiser HMEC 45's died after 10 years of faithful sevice, so the search was on... I tried the Bose A20, excellent also, but didn't like the full size headset in the Challenger 300, but it was great in my Champ! They also where almost too quiet in the jet, couldn't hear the engines at all, or the guy next to me if he took his headset off. Then I tried the Sennheiser HMEC 26-2-T, they sounded great, great mic, good noise cancelling, but they just didn't like my head much for some reason... These David Clarks are much better for me, the noise cancelling about the same as the Senns, but of course not as quiet as the Bose, but for me it is perfect in the jet, and adequate even in the Champ. The comfort is far better than the Sennheisers, and so much lighter than the Bose. The bluetooth just works, like it should, and for both phone and music from my Google Nexus phone... even made a call from the Champ! Over all I am very happy with this headset, and heartily recommend it.

    Pros

    Light weight, comfortable, clear

    Cons

It can take some time to figure out a good position

    General Comments

Not as quiet as an around the ear headset can be, but unbeatable for the price. I am using the headset in a Beech 99 (very loud!) the headset does a great job reducing the noise and the audio is very clear. The blue tooth works very well, I do wish it had an option to mute or quiet the aux audio instead of only muting it. Great headset and I would recommend buying it.

    Great headset
    Pros

    Light weight and comfortable.

    Cons

I like how it folds up but I hope this feature is not a source of failure in the future.

    General Comments

I like this headset, I have been using it for about 2 weeks now. The headset is well designed and looks like it is a quality build. It is comfortable and does not bother my ears or head. I normally have the headset on for about 6 to 7 hours at a time. The noise canceling feature works well and makes a noisy Boeing cockpit less fatiguing.

    David Clark DC Pro-X
    Pros

    Very light

    Cons

Unfortunately the headset gave me a bad headache. The pad over the top of the head is to thin, there are two protruding metal loops that hold a wire in place across the the top of the headset that can be felt through the inadequate padding. It seems to me that DC could have made the the wire retention piece flush instead of protruding.

    General Comments

The on ear pads made my ears very hot. This was uncomfortable after about 30 minutes.
