The Flying Fortress
Jul 17, 1935
On 17 July 1935, before an admiring crowd of employees and press, Boeing rolled out the B-17.
The aluminum skin was polished, the five machine guns ready for action, and the bomb bay doors opened for all to see.
It would be nicknamed the Flying Fortress.
On 28 July, 1935 under company pilot Leslie Tower, the new aircraft would take flight for the first time. For the next 75 years the Flying Fortress graced the skies, leaving on-lookers dreaming of what it would be like to take this historic bird to the air.
