Historically, leather flight jackets made their way into the cockpit of bombers and fighters during WWII. These planes would often be flying at higher altitudes where the air was much colder than it was on the ground so pilots and crew would need a way to keep warm on long missions. Leather jackets with thick padding and knit cuffs were the pilot’s best defense against the harsh conditions found at high altitudes.
The iconic MA-1 was first insured to the Air Force in 1949. The internal lining of the MA-1 was safety orange so that downed pilots could turn the jacket inside out and be easily seen. The orange in the Flight Outfitters logo is based on the classic jacket. It is only fitting that the lining of our Leather MA-1 Leather Jacket is the same color orange of the jacket that started it all.
