Since the dawn of the 21st century, new technologies like stealthiness and enhanced data-link have transformed air combat. Since the dawn of the 21st century, new technologies like stealthiness and enhanced data-link have transformed air combat. The Joint Strike Fighter program arose from this need to replace aging fleets of the Air Force, Navy, and Marines, who sought the aforementioned stealth and technological superiority. The JSF Program, with participants such as Boeing and Lockheed, would engage in a hard fought battle of rigorous test flights, cost overruns, and failures that would see the drawing board be turned upside down. The competition would create the X-32 and the X-35, prototypes that could take off vertically, have stealth coatings, and use advanced electronics to change the shape of a modern battlefield. In the end of the program, Lockheed’s traditional design and advanced stealth characteristics would end up winning the competition, creating the design that would be adapted for the full production F-35 Lightning.

This first prototype was airborne in October of 2000, 6 years before the first production F-35 was flown and more than 15 years before the type was officially put into service. Just like its JSF design predecessor, it maintained the three variants proposed by Lockheed, each with a unique layout to fit the branches of the United States and its international customers. The F-35A, destined for the Air Force, had a conventional engine setup with no vertical takeoff, but it could carry the maximum weapons payload possible and a large amount of internal fuel. The F-35B, for the Marines, was the middle ground with its full vertical liftoff and landing capability but more limited weapons load of the three, able to operate from almost any surface. The final version was for the Navy, the F-35C, which had a 8 foot wider wing in order to carry more internal fuel while maintaining the same 18,000lb weapons payload as the F-35A. It was fit for carrier duties with strengthened landing gear, tail hook, and airframe. All three variants will be serving far into the future in ground attack, phasing out the aging fighters that stood the test of time before them.

This 1:72 Die-Cast model features a high quality paint job with pad printed details and engraved panel lines that show off the features of the F-35C. Model also has detailed landing gear and an internal weapons bay, with display stand for poseability of the model in flight. Measures 8.5” in length with a 7.25” wingspan.

Features:
•Engraved panel lines and accurate paint job, with pad printed decals to reflect the real F-35C.
•Detailed internal weapons bay and landing gear, with included ordinance that attaches to the model.
•Includes a display stand for poseability in flight.
•Measures 8.5” in length with a 7.25” wingspan.
