Now with enhanced scanning and reception

Sporty’s Air Scan II Aviation Radio/Scanner gives pilots and aviation buffs two radios in one. With our exclusive Aviation Interrupt feature you can listen to a ballgame, talk-radio or music and never miss an aviation transmission. Equipped with Bluetooth, the Air Scan II can easily pair to a phone or iPad for playing music from your favorite app. Perfect for the desk at your FBO or your workbench in the hangar, the Air Scan II is an easy way to monitor aviation traffic while still listening to your favorite music.

Memory

Store up to 10 different frequencies from each tunable source using the Preset feature. This allows you to quickly scroll through your local frequencies without having to type them in every time. The 10 aviation presets are used for the Aviation Interrupt feature.

Aviation Interrupt™

While listening to your favorite AM/FM station or Bluetooth/Aux source, the Air Scan II silently scans up to 10 preset channels for activity. When a signal is detected on any of these channels, it interrupts the music and plays the aviation transmission. When the transmission ends, the Air Scan II “returns you to your regularly scheduled program.

Bluetooth/Aux In

Don’t want to listen to FM or AM radio stations? Use the Bluetooth feature to pair your phone or tablet to the radio for listening with your favorite app. You can also use a standard 3.5 aux input cable (sold separately) to plug in your phone or iPad if it has a 3.5mm headphone jack.

External Speaker

Use the dedicated 3.5mm headphone jack to connect the Air Scan II to external speakers. Here at Sporty's Pilot Shop, we connect an Air Scan II to the ramp speakers, so linemen never miss a radio call.

Package includes Air Scan II radio, 110V wall plug, telescoping BNC antenna and user guide.

A receiver that doesn't receive!
Thought I would like to monitor local air traffic while I work from my home office located approx 5 nm from KHIO. The Air Scan II arrived in great shape and is super easy to use. Only problem is that it DOES NOT RECEIVE any AM radio transmission - Air band OR AM broadcast band with or without the antenna ... it does receive FM broadcast weakly also with or without the antenna. Will be sending it back to Sporty's for credit toward something else on my wish list. Not a happy camper!

Mediocre
The AM/FM reception is not great even though we are just in a suburban area of Houston, and the Air reception is pretty good only if a plane if going overhead to our house. It must need an auxiliary antenna and I would also like to have a battery pack so that I can use it outside without having to plug it in to operate.

Solid unit. Great for the hangar. Better than wasting batteries in your handheld.

It’s Ok
Aviation Interrupt works well. I am personally disappointed with the volume production, you turn up the volume too loud and the speaker distorts - in my Hangar I like the volume turned up. I got the bright idea to add / use a powered speaker to get better, cleaner volume, the only Audio Out is the headset jack, which does not provide enough signal strength to drive the powered speaker. I then tried using the Powered Speaker with my ICOM A-25C and it worked perfectly, lots of clear, crisp volume. The Air Scan II just is what it is, not terrible, not great

Weak reception in building, but otherwise works as promised
Using it for music in my on-airport office and to monitor aircrew communications. Works as promised, but the reception with the standard antenna is weak. I'm 1000 yards from the tower but couldn't hear ATC. Hooked it up via coax cable to an antenna on the roof and now can hear all traffic around the airport and most traffic in the surface area. Bluetooth and aviation interrupt work great.

From a Ham Radio addic
Radio performs well on receive. For having multiple functions blue tooth, Fm, and Am broadcast and of course for what is designed for the airband frequencies.
Now on to the matter of others that are having issues with the receive portion on the airband frequencies. I'll first state i am a Ham Radio operator and have been very educated over the years on antennas and the understanding of tuned antennas to specific frequencies/band whether it's a ground plane or a sole vertical without radials aka counterpose or a Yagi or dipole antennas. All serve their purpose well, that's if you have an understanding of how they work.
The telescopic antenna that comes with the air scan radio is ok and just that. It is if you are located within let's say 6miles at the most and you place the radio by the window in the direction of the airport your interested in and even better a widow on the second floor.
All airband frequencies 118.00 MHz - 135.00 MHz are VHF and are vertically polarized due to the antennas used thus the radio bandwidth propagation is mainly line of sight. The higher your antenna is located at the better reception. For the first lesson here is that you'll need to have an external antenna, yes that means outside high as you can get it and on that note, you'll need an antenna that is tuned specifically for VHF airband frequency. Whether it's a ground plane antenna or a single vertical and for those that are 29 miles or better from the airport you'll need to think about a Yagi antenna and again all tuned for the airband frequencies. So I'll leave you with the famous words of many these days is Google it that is vhf propagation and radio bandwidth for further understanding of this post and you'll thank yourself and have the proper beginning knowledge of understanding radio waves and the proper antenna and you'll be much more satisfied that now the radio will work as it should. It all starts with the antenna !!! Oh one more thing is to use the proper coax like Lmr 400 or RG 213 coax is a hole nothe lesson.

Okay but wish the AM/FM radio sound quality was bettter
The radio is the only one I could find on the market with the feature to listen to AM/FM radio with the air comm radio interrupt feature. The interrupt works as advertised, which is nice living near a runway, it alerts me to aviation activity. My complaint is that the radio sound quality is poor. There's a lot of noise on the signals no matter how much we fiddle with the antenna. The electronics must have poor quality filters.
