OK--Easy to make a lot better
I'd give it two or three stars, except I found an easy fix for the biggest problems. Four stars for performance once it's fixed. (Would be 5 stars if I didn't have to do it myself.)

I've owned one of these for over 12 years and I'm buying another one. The foam started to deteriorate a year or two ago; pretty good life for a gust lock that sits at a tiedown year round. Most of the flag tore off about 5 years ago, but it's not crucial.

The biggest problem is that--between having to loosen and tighten the wingnut all the time and trying to secure it to a tapered slot (e.g. the slot between the rudder and vertical stabilizer), it's a hassle and tends to loosen up and fall off.

There is a way to make it LOTS better. The biggest problem for me as a rudder gust lock was that the taper on the rudder meant that it tended to work it's way loose over time and fall out. Instead, I replaced the lock-nut with a flex-lock wingnut (so it will stay at whatever thickness you set), added a cord on the cap nut to the end of the ring bolt that would loop around the vertical stabilizer, and added a cap nut to the end of the bolt to give a loop tied at the end of the cord something to grab on to.

This way, I never have to adjust the wing nut, just slide the bolt in place, loop the cord around the vertical stabilizer, and hook it to the cap nut at the other end of the bolt. Never loosens, never falls off.

Control Locks
I was hoping to use this lock for the ailerons of my glider. The bolts were round and did not fit the tolerances between the control service and the wing. If the bolts had a flattened form in the middle so that they would fit in between the control services and the wing, I could slip them in and screw them snugly into place. I could barely uses them for my rudder. Luckily, the spacing at one of the joints allowed the screw to slip in ant the lock to firmly press against the horizontal stabilizer and the rudder. It holds snugly and securely. I was just disappointed that the bolts could not have been formed to meet the needs of a more precision fit control services. For, larger power aircraft, these seem like a good buy.

Pros: Keeps control surfaces in check Cons: Pricey If you can't come up with a generic interior control lock, these work well.

Pros: Using control locks on the yoke keep the ailerons from moving but still puts stress on the cables in gusty conditions. These hold the ailerons in place with minimal stress on the cables. Cons: You must put them on TIGHT or they will fall off. Also, they are easy to steal. I really like these, I have lost several and still keep buying them.

Pros: Well made from quality materials. If your plane sits outside and you don't have some sort of gustlock for your rudder, you need this. I know what you're thinking: "Hey, I could make one of those myself for less." Well, maybe. But between your job, kids, and flying, you won't get around to it. Just buy it and your flight controls will thank you. Cons: Wish there was some sort of quicker tensioning mechanism. The wing-nut is plenty secure, but it's tedious to have to keep spinning it on and off.

Pros: Holds controls in place as expected and visually stands out enough to make it easy to see on a pre-flight inspection. Cons: Cannot use it on a C-172 elevator. Shaft that holds it together needs to be flexible or curved to fit into gap on elevator. Highly recommended. It beats trying to hold controls with a seat belt.

Pros: Easy to use. Installed/removed in less than 30 seconds. Cons: Metal washer may be easily dropped, and lost on ramp surface. Great product, great deal, and is made better than shown as yarn strands have been replaced by a nylon streamer.

Pros: Inexpensive and works very well. I see that some say they come off the tapered ailerons, I use a bungee cord to keep them on. Just hook the bungee cord on the eye of the bolt and the tie down ring, they won't come off. The ailerons are firmly locked to the flaps. These last me about five years, then the foam starts to break down and I replace them. Cons: None Great product

I probably should return this product but the shipping costs aren't worth it.

Will this work for a Piper Cherokee elevator?
Russell B on Jun 30, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Don't use a pad lock. Tie the stick back with the seat belt. What I do, is extend one belt, wrap it around the stick once and secure the stick in the aft position with with the other belt. That way no metal is touching the stick to scratch and it also secures the ailerons. You can do the same with a yoke
