The fit is perfect and the leather has a rich, dark patenna! This is by far the best leather jacket that I own.As for the price, less than I would have expected for such a beautiful jacket! Also love the heavy duty zipper in a brilliant shiny gold color!November 7, 2019Purchased
4 weeks agoWish it had fitGreat jacket, and well worth the price. The leather was beautiful. I returned it because the large was too big, and the medium was not available. The zipper was difficult to fasten at the bottom, due to the stiffness of the leather, but that might ease with time.December 28, 2018Purchased
11 months agoDurability5 / 5Reliability5 / 5Performance5 / 5Ease Of Use5 / 5Value5 / 5Would You Recommend?YesExcellent Quality at an Even Better PriceTo start, I have many leather jackets. My wife says I have a fetish...but I digress. The ANJ-3 was meant to replace the army air corps' A2 and the navy's G1 jacket, and to standardize one flight jacket across the services. ANJ-3 stood for "Army Navy Jacket 3". It mated the shirt collar from the A2 with the bi-swing back and underarm gussets of the G1, while of course deleting the wool collar of the G1. The results was and is the most versatile flight jacket one could wish for. Unfortunately, the army and navy brass couldn't agree (imagine that) and the army fliers were saddled with the A2 until it was eventually replaced by the B10, B15, MA-1, CWU series (all cloth, nylon or aramid jackets) and the army and later air force pilots lost their leather jackets. The navy aviators kept their traditional leather jackets, because unlike the army's A2 jacket, you could actually lift your arms above your shoulders and move around the cockpit WAY more freely due to the G1's underarm gussets and bi-swing back. The Navy even took into consideration that their pilots might have to bail out over water and could even swim in their G1s if they had to. The army guys might as well as been wearing cement boots along with their A2s.
Back to the present... I'm 5'10" and 240 pounds, wide shoulders and muscular with just a bit of a "man gut". I ordered the XL Regular ANJ-3 from Sporty's and I have plenty of room to spare. I like this because leather stinks as an insulator and I can layer up under the jacket during our cold north east winters. The jacket is make of a very nice goat skin in a medium dark seal brown color. Goatskin is immediately pliable, yet amazingly tuff and tear resistant. Goatskin is also inherently pebbly in grain, and the grain in my ANJ-3 is beginning to "pop" out even more already, which I love. I have an older Sporty's ANJ-3 from back when they were made in the US that I bought off of an internet auction site (46 Long) that fits me much tighter, like a military fit. The goatskin on that one is nice, but the current one is nicer.
For sizing on Sporty's current ANJ-3, I'd say order one size down for a more trim, military fit. For a looser fit that you can layer under, go with your normal size.
For anybody who is concerned that the jacket is made in Pakistan, I understand that some people just can't get past that and why. However, in the online jacket forums, most would agree that some of the best quality goat skin comes from the middle east. Having an older and newer Sporty's ANJ-3, I can personally attest that the foreign made jacket is every bit as nicely constructed as my older one. If this jacket were made in the States today, we would be paying between $500 and $600 for it. Thank you Sporty's, and I know if more people were exposed to the ANJ-3 it would be way more popular than the A2!
While I was "hard" on the A2 above, I feel it only fair to mention that the newer leather A2s that are being issued to our Air Force pilots now have small underarm gussets and a little more material added to their sides. Our fliers were having these alterations done to their older A2s by a small shop called Pop's Leather outside of our base in Turkey, and to their credit the USAF eventually incorporated them into the current A2s. Because issued gear has to be made in the US to be Berry Law compliant, and the contracts also go to the lowest competent bidder, the leather is often not near as nice as that on my Sporty's ANJ-3. For that, look at the A2 that Sporty's sells, as it also incorporates the updates that the issue jacket does. It won't be made in the States, but it will be a nicer jacket.
Thank you Sporty's for offering these jackets at fantastic prices, and please don't stop having the ANJ-3 made. 12 months agoValue4 / 5Modern Leather Flight JacketI was pleased when I received this jacket, but chose to return it for a exchange to the "Current Issue A-2".
I was pleased with the appearance of the jacket from the front, but disappointed with the appearance from the rear.
The "Bi Swing" did not lay flat and looked awkward and very bulky.
My thanks to Sporty's for their exchange policyDecember 4, 2018Purchased
1 year agoWould You Recommend?YesThe Modern Leather Flight Jacket is a beautiful iconic jacket. This beautiful jacket is made with an excellent grade of leather with superior workmanship and is a nice dark brown as pictured. I’m 5’ 9” and 165 lbs and the medium was the right size for me. I am however having my tailor shorten and take in the width of the sleeves which isn’t unusual for me since a new jacket in my size often has sleeves that are too long and/or wide for my particular body type. Sporty’s Pilot Shop was quick sending the jacket which was packaged very well for protection. I would recommend Sporty’s and would buy from them again.April 12, 2018Purchased

The buttons are cumbersome and lead to just leaving them open.April 6, 2018Purchased

It arrived a lot sooner than I had expected, 3 days after I ordered it (I live in California). First time I tried it on, I could feel the quality of the material. Pockets are nice with lots of room. Received many compliments on it. This jacket is nice to keep you warm enough in windy cold weather, yet nice enough to wear in moderate temperatures. The size was a perfect fit. Highly recommend! Feels comfortable enough to wear while flying!October 26, 2017Purchased
