Keeps the cabin comfortable on warm days. Be sure to zip it up and keep the flap secure for best efficiency. Don’t be afraid to fill with 40 pounds of ice. Buy the extension plug to reach the back seats. Sometimes the plug pulls out so you have to pay attention.September 5, 2019Purchased

Cheap 12-volt plug-in piece came apart and cannot get it put together again, rendering unit unusable. Too bad.December 29, 2018Durability4 / 5Reliability2 / 5Performance3 / 5Ease Of Use5 / 5Value2 / 5Would You Recommend?YesArctic Air 38 Quart Cooler Portable AC UnitI bought this Arctic Air 38 quart AC cooler specifically for my 2018 Dodge 1500 Cargo (Camper) van, to run off my solar powered batteries when off the grid, basically to keep my little dog comfortable when it's too hot to be outside.
It works as planned, although the 12 volt (cigarette) plug-in connector is not the best, and with any vibration will ultimately work loose and lose the connection that keeps the cooler running.
So, that part sucks, and the manufacturer should replace that part with a quality part made in the USA. For $525 you deserve something better !July 13, 2018Purchased

Sometimes it is well over 125 degrees on the ramp. I might add that where the hose connects to the unit, it is difficult to assemble. I spent $9 and fixed that issue. This slips snuggly over the male end with a quick release. No damage or interference with ANY moving parts. I would recommend to ANYONE!!!!June 16, 2018Purchased

I worked 36 years in investigations and was as pleased to see this product come on the market as I was to see good quality GPS tracking units become available. I use an extra cooler to stock up for the long surveillances. I will never retire with this unit as my back-up. Great design. Don't bother to try anything else. I can close the door and still be able to think. My wife used to say: "until we are in the air, it gets so hot and suffocated that your sweat starts sweating..." On a side note on our G2 SR22 we can only have it on low setting, turning on the pump and the fan at the same time trips the fuse so we only use the low (fan) setting. Doesn't matter, it makes that big of a difference to have cool air circulating on the cockpit while on the ground. In the low setting we were able to take a two hour flight and still have enough ice in the cooler to have cool air when we land to not have to rush to open the door.October 3, 2017Purchased
over 2 years agoDurability5 / 5Reliability5 / 5Performance5 / 5Ease Of Use5 / 5Value5 / 5Would You Recommend?YesLove this unit!I had a little skepticism about this unit until I bought mine in March of 2017. I am very pleased with its performance. You need to turn the pump off at altitude in order to preserve your ice, but the unit is phenomenal in terms of cooling during ground run-ups on a 90 degree day and a hot ramp in southern Louisana. Anything happens to this unit today, I'd buy another tomorrow! Believe DAT!

Browse 41 questions Browse 41 questions and 79 answershow is it connected to power supply, regular plug, cigarette lighter, other? i would like to use in back of my van/pickup bed when i transport my k9sBEST ANSWER: It comes with the standard cigarette lighter connector and is available in either 12V or 24V options. I purchased (summer 2016) the Arctic Air Portable Air Conditioner (52 Qt. - Single Fan - 12 Volt) for use in our aircraft's cockpit. I have never plugged it into the cigarette lighter in our plane, as I didn't want the battery to be drained when I wished to cool the cockpit before starting the engine. To get around this, I purchased a Goal Zero 22004 Yeti 150 Solar Generator from Amazon (less expensive; we paid 200 USD) and it works great! Simply keep it plugged into the wall socket until you're ready to use it! A very simple and straightforward approach in getting around using the electrical system of the aircraft, or in your case, your van or pickup. You can even purchase the solar panels if you wish, as I did, to charge it while out on trips where no electrical plugs are readily available. Hope this helps! Can I use this in my cottage w/o venting?BEST ANSWER: Yes, no different than using in my cockpit for hours at a time. The arctic cooler is a heat exchanger that cools recirculating air by passing through a heat exchanger. Cold water is pumped through the tubes of the heat exchanger while air Is blown over the outside of the tubes. No venting is required.Would the use of Dry Ice if available (of course) be better for even more than 3 hrs. of cooling?BEST ANSWER: my understanding is that you should NOT use dry ice.I also want to use this A/C; I am putting four extra large K-9s in the bed of my truck with a new shell in my husband's truck. The K-9 will need to stay cool when we haul our travel trailer, stop to eat, etc. I looked at many other options, but I didn't think air would get from our cab to the bed. I am looking for an inverter to use, but I don't know much about them. When we ordered the shell, they said match what you want to use (A/C) to inverter size. I saw where solar was mentioned and interested in knowing more since I assume the inverter will drain my battery if we stop for any period, and the truck is not running. We would need constant air to the dogs, and you can't leave the truck running. Suggestions? Thank you!BEST ANSWER: I would place a second 12V battery (preferably a sealed AGM or lithium) back in the bed area next to the arctic air unit. I would connect a 2 conductor cord to the positive and negative battery posts of that battery, and put a male cigarette lighter plug on the other end. While you are hooking up that charging cord, hook a female cigarette lighter socket up to the positive and negative battery posts also so you can plug in your article air for the pooches. Route the charging cable into the cab (whatever path you can find) and plug it into the trucks cigarette lighter. When you stop, if you shut the truck off, unplug the cigarette plug. This way, the doggies will have cool air and even if the auxiliary battery goes completely dead, your truck battery will still start the truck (normally).
If you drive a foreign made vehicle, most of them “unpowered” the cig lighter upon shut down. If you drive a Ford, unplug it. Hope this helps.😀Looking to buy this to use during flight instruction in multiple airplanes. Anyone else have trouble with blowing fuses when connecting to cigarette lighter socket? Also, at least one of the airplanes is a 24v system, and I plan to buy a step-down converter so I can use this 12v air cooler. Any problems with that setup?BEST ANSWER: I was blowing fuses in one of my planes and it turned out that the fuse for the socket in the panel was the wrong amp. Once we got the right fuse inline then all was well with the cooler. The other thing I have noticed is that in older planes (ex. my '77 T210) the wiring behind the panel, from the socket to the battery, is too small of a gauge wire and allows too much heat to build up. This will cause some white smoke and the electrical burn smell. A larger (smaller number) gauge wire will be needed behind the panel in this case.Unit selection vs cockpit size?BEST ANSWER: Even though I have a Light Sport aircraft (1,320 max weight; 2 people) which has an interior that is smaller than a larger plane that holds more than 2 people, the unit cools great. I have the 12 volt-30 qt and it takes up less space than a larger capacity unit so I believe it would cool fine for a 4- seat aircraft. Be aware of your aircrafts Auxilary power as you may need a power supply, depending on your airplanes amperage. What model do I want for a Cessna Cardinal ?BEST ANSWER: The main thing is to get the correct voltage. The length of time it cools is based on the size.My Artic air cooler doesn’t blow the cold air it use to, what’s wrong?BEST ANSWER: On the 12 volt plugin there are 2 switches one pumps water out when you are done flying for the day. The other turns on blower ,when you have enough ice and water to circulate the air. I hope this helpsHow long does it hold ice. How long before the ice melts ? Larry T JACKSONVILLE, FloridaBEST ANSWER: This depends on the temperature. You can expect 3-4 hours of cooling. What size would be best for a Piper saratoga?BEST ANSWER: The bigger the size the longer the cooling will last, but you will be carrying more weight. How much does the unit weigh?BEST ANSWER: 18 lbs. empty and 45 lbs. full of ice.
