Which cable do I need?

Most headsets come in multiple cable configurations. Choosing the right one is pretty easy, it just depends on what type of aircraft you fly:

  • Battery powered, twin plugs - this is by far the most common style, with separate microphone and headphone plugs (so-called PJ plugs). Almost every airplane ever built has these two plugs in the panel, so these headsets are universal. The only downside is that, for ANR headsets, you will need to use AA batteries to power the headset.
  • Aircraft powered, 6-pin plug - the second most popular style, sometimes called the "LEMO plug," requires no batteries since it is powered by the panel. This is convenient, but it does require the 6-pin plug to be installed in the panel. While many newer airplanes come with this option, most older airplanes do not. For these applications, you'll need to have your avionics shop wire in the plug - not a big job, but not something pilots can do on their own.
  • Airbus XLR plug - less common is a single 5-pin connector that is made for Airbus jets.

When in doubt, we recommend buying the battery powered, twin plug model. This is the most universal option, and will work in almost any airplane. If you have a 6-pin plug in your airplane or you plan to install one, the aircraft powered model is a nice option.

Sporty's tips

  1. Selecting the proper ear tip size is critical. If you have the wrong size, the headset’s performance will be compromised. This is especially true of the tap control feature, which simply will not work properly. ProFlight comes with three tip sizes, S, M, L. The medium is the default size and fits most pilots best. The small and large can be found in the pouch inside the carry case. Some pilots may find that they need one size in one ear and another size for the other ear.
  2. To change the ear tip, pilots should not pull on the “wing” of the silicone ear tip. Instead, hold the wing with your index finger and thumb while supporting the base of the ear tip with your other fingers. Gently pull back and away from the ear bud to remove the tip. This will reduce the likelihood that they will tear the ear tip.
  3. Three Levels of Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) –  In fact, the three settings offer different noise cancelling profiles based on environmental factors. This means that in some aircraft pilots might find medium to be a better setting than high. We also need to stress that the low position is really just “hear-through” which optimizes voice frequencies outside the intercom. Unfortunately, wind noise is in a similar frequency range as voice, so the user will experience an increase in overall noise, even though voices will be optimized. It is important to stress that low mode is intended for use on the ground, while at the gate for example, to communicate with people coming in and out of the flight deck while staying in contact with flight ops. It is NOT intended for use while in flight. The intent is to use it when you need, then to go back to medium or high mode.

Vast improvement over the Series 1
I have owned a Proflight Series 1 since it launched last year. It was a good headset, marred by 2 major issues.
Firstly, the cable was far too thick and unmalleable for comfortable use. Any quick head movement and the cable pulled the headset out of position. Because it was coiled up in the case for storage, it also formed its own natural bend over time. I regularly fly form both seats, and found when using it from the right seat it was ecevn worse because of the twist if the cable. Thankfully, that issue is totally solved by the Series 2. The new cable is much thinner and lighter, as in every other headset I've used.
My second issue with the Series 1 was that when powered by aircraft power (B777) through the XLR connection, there was a constant electrical clicking noise in perfect timing with the green power LED flashing. I had to resort to a dual plug adapter and using batteries to solve this. This issue too has also been sorted on the Series 2. Now it works perfectly through aircraft power on the XLR plug.

The Series 2 is what the Series 1 should have been. Bose really slipped up with the launch of the original model.

Unbeatable Performance & Comfort
I have had a chance to try out the Bose Proflight Series 2 over 100 hours of line flying. I am currently flying the Embraer 175 and we get a good mix of various flight regimes during low level and high level flight with the regional flying we do. I may also add that I had the chance to try the initial version of the Bose Proflight as well. I must say, Bose has hit the ball out of the park with this Series 2 headset. It is simply perhaps the best high-performance headset I have used in 11 years of flying. The improvements that have been made are apparent and noticeable.

The stability of the headset on the head is fantastic and you can barely feel the headband due it being so light. The longest flight I had a chance to test it on was 3.8 hours block, and after continuous wearing I had no noticeable hotspots or pressure points. As far as the earbuds go the ANR is fantastic; I don’t know how they did it but the amount of noise reduction is impeccable. I also like the fact that it has various modes of ANR that can be tailored to specific operations, as the ANR reduction targets different noise spectrums that vary from aircraft to aircraft. This feature is very useful if one desires to use the headset in more than one aircraft. The tap through feature now works flawlessly. The original Proflight had a tendency for the tap through to activate on TO or landing, however that issue has been fixed with the Series 2 version. It works so conveniently that I now have both earbuds in on pushback, activate the ANR, and tap one ear bud to hear the surroundings until tapping it back into ANR after engine start. A very well thought-out and amazing feature that I now have come to immensely enjoy having. Now onto the chord, it is AMAZING. Bose have gone ahead and completely redone the chord to be extremely mobile and easy to manipulate. Is so thin and light that clipping it and getting it out of the way in the flight deck has become a complete non-issue. The chord is simply now just right. The Bluetooth on the module has been the easiest pairing with the phone I have had with any headset. It is so fast that it pairs within 1 second of flipping the switch on the control module, and away I am making crystal clear calls and/or playing music. The audio quality is outstanding and the module has a switch to control the phone or volume music level. The headset case is super convenient and super easy to get the headset into. Simply putting the headset into the case and wrapping the chord around neatly takes me 5 seconds tops and into the flight bag it goes. I must say the case is super nice and has a convenient pouch for spare batteries and tips.

All in all, this might be the last headset I buy for quite a while, or at least for the next 10+ years. Hands down I recommend for you to try it and/or purchase. I certainly won’t ever be going back to wearing a regular on-ear headset again. Bose has listened to pilot' s needs and what they want in high performance flight decks; the Proflight Series 2 headset is the proof of that effort.
