Ideal for pilots

The TOCSIN 3 Cockpit Monitor is an advanced single gas detector specifically designed for the cockpit. Most home CO detectors don't alert pilots to dangerous levels of CO soon enough, and even if they do the alarm is far too quiet to hear over a noisy engine. This model solves both problems - it combines a rugged design and reliability with advanced sensor resolution, plus three different alert modes (red flashing lights, vibrating, and a loud audio alarm). Advanced micro-processing capabilities allow for quick unit configuration adjustments. Large backlit screen displays CO level in parts per million (ppm).

Features:

  • Alerts the pilot to dangerous levels of carbon monoxide in the cabin
  • Three alarm modes: flashing lights, vibration, and 90 dB Piezo horn
  • Alarm points pre-set at 35 and 100 parts-per-million (PPM)
  • Customizable alarm points
  • Display always shows ambient air Carbon Monoxide levels in PPM
  • Kit includes 3M™ Dual Lock™ attachment tape suitable for high-temperature cockpits
  • Sensor detects from 0-500 ppm.

This unit features a highly accurate sensor. Sensor will last for approximately 2 years and it is replaceable by the factory. Uses a CR15H270 Industrial Lithium CR2 battery (included).

I fly multiple aircraft regularly. Having an accurate CO detector in my flight bag is great insurance. I love that this has a digital readout in ppm, light, noise and vibrating alarms to grab my attention in an emergency.

Does what it says
This is a rugged little unit which works as advertised. Feels much more industrial than the picture makes it out to be. Very sensitive but I haven’t had any false alarms. Loud enough to be heard in the cockpit. Small enough to be out of the way. I wish it had a way to set an auto turn off timer.

I received an alert today from the dectector.
I clip the detector to my shoulder belt and, today, I got an alert. The level was 35 ppm and rising. I heard the beeping and saw the level then immediately ventilated the cabin. I was able to reduce the level to normal and continue my flight. I don't yet know what caused the level to rise but without the detector, I might not have known it was up.

Works great--all the features I wanted
Ok, there are some other ones out there that cost less, but nothing with the features this had. One didn't vibrate, another no clip (and this one has a strong clip...think clip on suspenders). I can hear this in a Cherokee 180 at run-up with Bose ANR on. (Tail wind gave us 35 ppm for a few moments). Great "insurance." You will have to send it in after 2 years for calibration and tune up.

a necessary device, only once in the past did the warning light up and that time it was true. This is my second device that I buy, the previous one was damaged by a blow.

TOCSIN 3
The unit was received well packaged and easy to set up. I put this in service Jan 2019 mounting it on the instrument panel with the supplied hook and loop fastener in full view. It seems to be very responsive providing measurements trailing other aircraft in taxi and during slow climbs. With my ANR headset on and the engine running the audio alarm during boot up is faint, but acceptable. This model is a major improvement with replaceable battery and available refurbishment over the earlier version it replaced that I think this is the best deal going for the assurance it provides and its price.

So far it seems to work as advertised.
Just purchased it, great piece of equipment for your piece of mind while flying with the heater on in the flight schools trainer. I can't rate the durability, reliability, or performance accurately as I have just purchased it. It's very easy to use, and if it detects a carbon dioxide leak and alarms it will save your life!

Great product
I tested this product at home in my garage. I started my 1972 Volkswagen in my closed garage and the unit went off in less than a minute. The alarm was loud and the unit vibrated to alert me. I am going to order a second unit for my Cirrus. The original unit will be kept in our Cessna 150 for my flying partner to share.

Excellent CO Detector - Built for Pilots
This is in fact one of the best detectors out there. I tested this device and couple of other devices (Sensorcon & Forensics) side by side. This device is very responsive and has excellent audio visual alerts (and buzzer) that are sure to grab your attention. I made a video of my testing:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8CpFD58JCE

You can checkout this device's performance yourself. The only downside is the sensor is recommended to be replaced every 2 years ($85 charge). That is a small amount to pay compared to the safety that this device provides.

Great addition and peace of mind.
After a lot of homework I decided to purchase the Tocsin3 CO cockpit monitor. I tested it against the exhaust on my truck and the alarm went off loud and clear. I'm very happy with the unit, just don't forget to turn it off and don't try that while taxing. The off button is a little temperamental.

Potential life saver
Works as advertised. In a fairly loud C-185, wearing ANR headsets, alerted us by loud beeping, clipped to shoulder strap, as CO exceeded 3.0+. When we shut off the heat and ventilated we could watch the reading decrease and managed by referencing C0 rest of flight.

What is the expected battery life of a new detector? Should the battery be turned on and off before and after each flight?
jim k on Oct 17, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I constantly forget to turn it off. Still haven't updated my post flight checklist. It's been left on for weeks before and was still going. I've had it for about 4 months, most of which time it has been on, and I still haven't changed the battery.
According to the manual a replacement battery should be ordered from the same retailer the device came from. Does Sportys sell replacement batteries?
A shopper on Oct 4, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The manual says that the replacement battery should be a 3.6 V SB-AA02. But the battery that came with my unit was a 3V CR2. Which should we use to replace?
Are these units pressure compensated for higher altitude operation?
Barry on Jul 17, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I'm not sure. But this is the second one l have owned and they work great. Been to 10 k ft and had no problems.
Will it work from inside a pants pocket? Plan to use it as an EMT, just in case.
A shopper on Sep 6, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I would not want to restrict the air flow in a pocket. I would recommend hanging it from belt loop so that is does not have a restricted air flow.
What is the operating temp range for this unit?
Doug G. on Dec 18, 2018
BEST ANSWER: From -20C to 50C (-4 -122F)
When does the 2 year period start?
A shopper on Dec 16, 2018
BEST ANSWER: From the date of purchase.
What ppm does it go down to and what ppm of CO does it sound off at?
Keith N on Dec 3, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Alarm points pre-set at 35 and 100 parts-per-million (PPM)
My husband bought a plane and it had this detector in it. It does not come on. I am going to get a CR2 battery, but where does the battery go? Thanks!
Kelly L on Apr 2, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I recommend downloading the TOCSIN 3 Operation Manual from Otis Instruments (sorry you'll have to do a web search - Sporty's won't allow links to other sites here). You'll need this doc for number of reasons, particularly for the re-calibration discussion. For battery replacement, following is an excerpt:
1. Remove the five machine screws located on the rear cover of the device.
2. Separate the rear cover from the front cover by gently pulling them away from
each other.
3. Using your thumb and forefinger, pull the battery out of the terminal board.
4. Slide a new battery into the terminal board.
5. Verify that the “+” and “-” sides of the battery are facing the correct direction
(and touching the battery contacts on the terminal board).
6. Place the front and rear covers together, then replace the five machine screws.
The recommended battery is an SB-AA02 (Lithium ½ AA Battery, 3.6V/1.2Ah)
I have one of these and the battery lasts only a few weeks, even while it's off - which it mostly is. I've sent it back for repair ($85.) Should have sent it back while it was under warranty -- oh, well..... Anybody else experiencing short battery life?
Lee B on Apr 26, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I have had one of these for over a year now. No problems with the battery or ant thing else for that mater. I am happy with it
I live in Australia and am looking at purchasing one of these - is there a place in Australia that can replace the sensors or would I be sending to the USA each time? Thanks
A shopper on Dec 17, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The manufacturer is here in the US. The unit would need to be returned to the US for service.
What is the weight of the unit?
A shopper on Nov 26, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Approximately .6oz
Is the warning noise loud or is it a high squeaker? Persons with high freq hearing loss need low tones.
Edward on Oct 20, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The alarm is loud. It can be heard while wearing a headset.
Is the unit suitable for passenger vehicle use?
Norman K on Oct 1, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes, it can be used in the car.
Is there a clip on back?
A shopper on Dec 12, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, there is a clip on the back.
