All-in-one device provides weather, traffic, audio and AHRS

You can have it all with the GDL 52 from Garmin: SiriusXM satellite weather and audio, subscription-free ADS-B weather, dual band ADS-B traffic, GPS position, even backup attitude information. Flexible display options mean you can view weather and traffic information on the Garmin Pilot app on iOS or Android, plus portable GPSs like the aera 660 and 795/796. The GDL 52 even works with the FltPlan Go app and ForeFlight.

  • Weather is delivered by satellite, allowing reception at any altitude, anywhere in the US and southern Canada
  • View high resolution radar, lightning, satellite imagery, METARs, TAFs, TFRs, echo tops, Pilot Reports and more
  • Listen to SiriusXM Radio in flight, with over 150 channels of music, sports and entertainment
  • View traffic with the included dual band ADS-B receiver
  • Access subscription-free FIS-B weather when in the US
  • Attitude heading reference system (AHRS) is a backup attitude source
  • Built-in WAAS GPS provides precise location
  • 5-hour rechargeable battery means no wires
  • Bluetooth connection to the Garmin Pilot app on iOS or Android
  • Also works with ForeFlight Mobile and the FltPlan Go app on iOS or Android

Coverage at any altitude

Continuous SiriusXM satellite updates — accessible by ground and air — can help you make better, more timely flight decisions. The SiriusXM network’s powerful satellites deliver seamless coverage across the continental U.S. and its coastal regions as well as southern Canada. Choose from available SiriusXM aviation packages that provide METAR data and animated NEXRAD imagery plus current reports on precipitation, lightning, winds aloft, echo tops, turbulence, freezing levels, TFRs and more.

Dual band ADS-B receiver too
When flying in the US, the GDL 52 can also receive subscription-free weather from the FAA’s ADS-B ground stations. This includes NEXRAD radar, METARs, TAFs, TFRs, and more. To help you maintain the most current weather picture, the GDL 52 receiver can queue the weather while your display device is sleeping or turned off so it automatically updates when you turn the screen back on.

In addition to comprehensive weather data, pilots utilizing GDL 52 can receive “dual-link” ADS-B traffic information and audible alerts to easily identify potential traffic conflicts. ADS-B traffic can be overlaid on the dedicated traffic page or the moving map, as well as IFR/VFR charts on compatible devices. Exclusive to Garmin displays, patented TargetTrend™ and TerminalTraffic™ technologies further enhance the traffic picture. TargetTrend provides pilots with a more intuitive method of judging target trajectories and closure rates, while TerminalTraffic displays a comprehensive picture of ADS-B-equipped aircraft and ground vehicles throughout the airport environment on the moving map and SafeTaxi® airport diagram.

SiriusXM Radio

By simply connecting a compatible Bluetooth headset or audio panel to GDL 52, you can wirelessly listen to your choice of high-quality audio entertainment channels provided by SiriusXM. Volume adjustments and station selection may be accessed through your compatible Garmin aviation portable or mobile device app. If you prefer, a 3.5 mm stereo audio jack positioned on the side of your GDL 52 makes it easy to provide a hardwired audio out connection to an auxiliary device or audio panel in your aircraft.

Built-in GPS and Attitude Sensors for SVX Display

In addition to its weather and audio entertainment capabilities, the GDL 52 feature set includes a built-in WAAS GPS receiver. This enables GDL 52 to deliver highly accurate aircraft position, speed and altitude information to your compatible mobile device app. Also, built-in attitude sensors enable select Garmin aviation portables and apps with SVX synthetic vision technology to serve as a backup attitude reference during your flights. With virtual terrain, obstacles, runways, horizon cues, HSI, GPS speed, altitude and more, this brings a whole new perspective to your portable navigation.

Subscriptions:

Subscription required for weather and audio. Subscriptions start at $29.99/mo. Note: pilots using Garmin Pilot have three subscription tiers to choose from; pilots using ForeFlight Mobile with the Garmin GDL 52 can access two tiers of SiriusXM Aviation weather (Pilot for ForeFlight or Pilot Express). Click here to learn more.

Broken micro USB port after light use - defective product
I bought this top of the line unit from Sporty's to use with my garmin pilot iPad app. It works really well for that - traffic awareness.
After about one month, the antenna fell off - $45 to replace.
After about 6 months use, the micro USB port internal to the unit broke off of the circuit board. You'll be plugging and unplugging this each to]one you use it, and it is a complete design and manufacturing defect. Garmin warranty is 3 months. I haven't been able to get anyone to quote me a cost to repair. My unit is junk right now, as there is no other way to charge it.
In restrospect, I would've bought the gdl 50; the need for Sirius Xm weather and radio is nil. I tried the Sirius WX trial; it is not worth any more than the free ads-b / fis-b WX.

Better then Foreflight Stratus3
I have been using Foreflight and Stratus3. Great products by the way!

I decided to switch to GARMIN for ADSB and HUD. I like much better. See pic. I usually know where I am so clean ADSB and HUD better then FF in my opinion. FF better for flight planning.

Stay away from Garmin watch...bought this features so buried in watch inaccessible while in flight.

Can use both apps together on ipad.
Very cool!

Garmin 52 A+
We fly in Northern Wyoming and the Garmin 52 works flawlessly with ForeFlight.
Its incredible portable all in one unit with:
ADSB(select areas have towers, displays all ADSB out aircraft on iphone/ipad)
GPS
Sirius XM Weather & Audio (includes 3 free months, the weather is much more accurate because unlike the Stratus relying on ADSB towers which we do not have a lot of in our area, this is satellite weather)
Bluetooth (not WiFi like Stratus, automatically tracks all flights and updates logbook)

The only downside is battery life but I purchased the 20,000mAH Flight battery pack from Sporty's and run it on 2.4 amp charge when it gets low after 4-5 hours no sweat!

HIGHLY RECOMMEND for training pilots or jumping between planes that do not have in-panel Garmin avionics.

Better than the G1000!
Works great! Highly recommended. Having ADS-B and SXM weather available as in-flight weather is a relief and for any flight. Traffic works great, better and more accurate than the G1000 unit on my airplane.

Garmin GDL52
We’re using this unit in a Challenger 300 with heated windshields. We have an external XM receiver antenna mounted on the glareshield in an area where there are no heating elements. The until receives “excellent” signals from SXM. We transmitt it all to my iPad with Garmin Pilot installed. Works perfectly ! !

I purchased the GDL-52 to link with my Aera 796
Via Bluetooth and it works great. It paired up after I updated the software on my 796 to 5.40.
ADS-B works great, Sirius XM works great.
And all the wires that were all over the cockpit to operate my Aera 796 are GONE.
My Aera 796 is now truely portable with SiriusXM and ADS-B
I could just keep going with all the things I LOVE
About the GDL-52. Thanks Garmin
