Programming
Should be made way much simpler to program. Manual needs to be simplified. With my connection to an external antenna I get 50 mile coverage

No Range
This is a decent radio, but is very limited in range. At best you could get 3 miles. Very disappointing since the aircraft is a very tall antenna.

Pretty much intuitive initial use. Had it up and running quickly. Will take a bit longer to get it fine tuned.

What I needed
Haven't used it much but, so far, just what i needed. I use it to get ATIS and clearance before I startup to save time on the ramp. I carry it in the plane as a spare com radio.

I bought this mainly for novelty purposes. I live within 3 miles of a class Charlie airport. I can hear both sides of the conversation for tower/ground and most of the approach control controller/traffic.

It does come in handy for getting the ATIS and clearance without having to fire up the APU/avionics. Better step outside though, doesn’t transmit too great while inside buildings.

Great little radio!

Do the channels have to be programmed or will unit scan?
Ross R on Sep 8, 2016

can you just use the keypad to go to the frequency you want w/o prgramming it?
A shopper on Oct 18, 2016

Does the keypad light up for night ops?
A shopper on Jan 21, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Doesn't appear to light up. There's a separate button above the transmit button that lights the screen when pushed, but the keypad doesn't illuminate.
what kind of range does this have - I'm about 30 K away from an airport will this work?
Ollie on Jan 9, 2018
BEST ANSWER: My understanding is that the range is about 10 or 15 nm. There are several articles on the internet comparing range between different hand held radios, like this one from sportys http://www.sportys.com/pilotshop/pirep/whats-range-portable-aviation-radios/
I tried mine about 7 miles out from the tower and it worked well enough for an emergency. I believe you can improve that range by connecting to your main nav/com antenna rather than the whip antenna on the unit.
I have a headset with built in PTT button. The output is a 4 pin HAM style connector. I have a cable that goes from that to a the same Radio Input as this cable. It works fine (PTT and All) in my Baofeng UV-5R. Will I need this adapter and a separate PTT button for an Icom IC-A14, or will my existing cables work?
