10 reasons pilots prefer Sporty's courses:

1. Four formats, one price

We know you’re busy, so our course is available almost anywhere. Use our online learning platform for complete access to videos and quizzes anywhere you have an internet connection. There’s no software to install – just log in and start learning. Or use our dedicated mobile apps for iPad, iPhone, Android, and Apple TV, which allow you to download videos for offline viewing. Progress automatically syncs between all formats so you can start a study session on your phone and finish on your laptop without missing a beat.

Completion certificate2. Get your written test endorsement

When you complete the course, we’ll  give you the flight instructor endorsement to take the written test—instantly! You can take this endorsement to the FAA testing center, and log it in your ForeFlight logbook. It's complete preparation for the FAA Knowledge Test.

3. Pass all your tests—guaranteed!

Our course is so complete we guarantee you’ll pass all three tests: the written, oral and flight. Our video segments make complicated subjects like aerodynamics and weather easy to understand, so you’ll impress the examiner. Plus, our Airman Certification Standards Study Guide cross-references every required task to the videos, making it easy to review for the checkride.

HD Maneuvers4. Dynamic in-flight video

Sporty’s courses are famous for their HD video and 3D animations. Not a boring ground school, we put you in the cockpit for a real world look at what flying is all about. You’ll see low instrument approaches from the left seat, and you’ll hear real world communications with air traffic control. Plus, each video segment includes helpful review notes for efficient studying, and many also have review quizzes to reinforce key concepts.

5. 27 fully-narrated hd maneuvers

In addition to the comprehensive video segments, Sporty’s Instrument Rating course also includes a detailed maneuvers guide. All 27 maneuvers you might be tested on are included, with a 3D animation of the maneuver, narrated procedures, common errors, and completion standards. It’s a great way to review for the checkride.

Test Prep Tools6. Powerful test prep tools

You’ll ace the written test with our interactive tools. Create customized study sessions from the actual FAA test questions and see the right and wrong answers, plus plain English explanations written by our team of CFIs. Detailed analytics show you which areas need the most help, and allow you to study only the questions you’ve missed. Then, take a practice test that simulates the real knowledge exam you'll have to pass.

7. Flight instructor tracking

We make it easy for your instructor to follow your progress through the course, so you always stay in sync with your in-person lessons. Invite a CFI to see your practice test scores and review your video progress.

8. Ask a CFI

If you're stumped by a difficult subject, talk to the experienced flight instructors at Sporty's. We have a team of over 25 CFIs on staff at our flight school, training students every day just like you, so they can offer quick, helpful answers. Just click the Ask a CFI button to send a message.

9. Complete training syllabus

Research shows that pilots learn better when they use a high quality syllabus. We include a complete Training Course Outline as part of our course – the same one we use in our flight school. It includes detailed outlines for both ground and flight lessons. Think of it as a bridge between your at-home study and flight training.

10. Airman Certification Standards

Our Learn to Fly Course includes the full text of the FAA’s Airman Certification Standards (ACS) - your guide to the checkride - and cross-references each task to the video segments. Our course also emphasizes deep understanding instead of just memorizing questions, something the FAA now discourages.

More Powerful Features:

  • Download videos for offline viewing in the app or stream them with an internet connection.
  • Automatic progress sync between all formats.
  • Air Facts segments go beyond the textbook to make you a proficient pilot.
  • Review notes and quick quizzes after most videos help you review your progress.
  • Closed captioned videos help students whose first language is not English.
  • Connect to your ForeFlight logbook to log your written test endorsement.
  • Earn FAA WINGS credit and save on your insurance.
  • Automatic updates mean you learn the latest information.

Success comes after many struggles!
As a rusty pilot, I purchased the Instrument Rating Course to help me brush up on my knowledge and get back into the swing of things again. I love the videos and like the way the practice tests are structured. My advice is to not get frustrated if you struggle. The FAA pool of questions seems to be endless and remember to take your time and read the questions and especially the answers correctly. One misplaced word means all of the difference in the world! I graph my test progress and in average show an upward trend meaning better scores. I take two tests per day; on the seventh day, I rest. Our mines need the rest after hitting it hard; the rest will show retention of material learned. Do not be surprised with peaks and valleys on your graph! Periods of terrible scores are succeeded with a magical higher score on a particular day, just out of the blue. It’s a lot like life! Never ever give up; success is based on lots of hard work and patience!

Great value! The future in IFR is here!
Worked for me! Passed written in a little over 1 week of study first time. Watch all the videos, take the practice tests. Look up your wrong answers and learn from your errors! Excellent.

Not for beginners to IFR! Study up..!
A lot of video portions are ‘older’ than expected but that’s not why the 3 star rating. The info comes SO FAST and seems more like something to watch after I know the info and need a refreshment. Am finding the need to constantly go back, and look up what is being talked about online because the video expects you to know a lot. This is not a beginning/intro to Instrument Rating butbis still very well done.

You will still need to study separate from the Videos
I went through all of the videos and the progress quizzes in the training. I immediately jumped to taking the practice test in the App. I was shocked to discovered how ill-prepared I was. I scored a 68%. It turns out that the training videos don't necessarily train you to the written test. You will still need to study separate from the video based training. Granted, the App does contain the practice test questions and answers, so you can go through the written documentation.

The videos are great and I feel like there is some worthwhile content. However....... If you purchase this, go in with your eyes open that you will still need to study and the videos won't teach you what you will need to know to be ready for the written exam.

Instrument Course a Good Option for Busy Pilots
I have very much enjoyed the format of the course. It is broken up into bite-size (3-15 minute) segments that are easy to watch during a break at work or between tasks. I did note that two of the lessons were repeated in two different sections of the course, which was a little aggravating. Also, I have found that you have to be careful to only single click the lesson titles or you will end up with multiple simultaneous plays of the same video with no way to stop all but one of them. Still, it's a good value for the money.

how long is online access?
A shopper on Aug 22, 2016
BEST ANSWER: There is no expiration date - you get free updates delivered automatically.
Can this be chromcasted?
A shopper on Jan 30, 2017
I want to have the availability to use this while I travel commercially, where I don't always have an internet connection. If I get the Ipad/Iphone app choice, can I access it also on my Mac Computer offline if I download it?
craig w on Sep 21, 2016
BEST ANSWER: You don't even have to go go the Mac if you don't want to. On the Ipad version it gives you the option of streaming the video, or downloading it. If you're going on a trip, just download 5 or 10 episodes or however many you think you can watch in the time span you'll be gone. It just takes up your data on the iPad, so when you're done or return home, delete them off of your device.
Is an Android App available?
Mark W on Sep 6, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Not yet, but stay tuned.
Do you get an endorsement, after completing the course satisfactorily, to take the knowledge test? Or must you still have a cfi signoff?
Ed W on Jan 14, 2017
BEST ANSWER: We will provide the signoff - no CFI required.

I'm looking at buying an iPad- but I'm not sure how much memory space I need for Sporty's and other aviation apps, etc. can you give me an idea what kind of space Sporty's requires?
Thank you
Daniel S on Sep 7, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Agree with the other answer. On my iPhone, which is the same as the iPad, under settings it tells me the Instrument course only takes up 73.3MB. You stream the videos. There is an option to download videos, if you are going out of wifi or for whatever reason want to have access to the video where you cannot otherwise stream it. But if you don't download the videos and store them on your local memory (iPad or iPhone) then the program itself only takes approx. 75MB...not much.
Can you print a page or picture for review later (.pdf)? I like paper better than screens and a 6 pack better than a PFD?
