There’s no software to install – just log in and start learning. Or use our dedicated mobile apps for iPad, iPhone, Android, Apple TV, and Roku, which allow you to download videos for offline viewing. Progress automatically syncs between all formats so you can start a study session on your phone and finish on your laptop without missing a beat.

Completion certificate2. Get your written test endorsement

When you complete the course, we’ll  give you the flight instructor endorsement to take the written test—instantly! You can take this endorsement to the FAA testing center, and log it in your ForeFlight logbook. It's complete preparation for the FAA Knowledge Test.

3. Pass all your tests—guaranteed!

Our course is so complete we guarantee you’ll pass all three tests: the written, oral and flight. Our video segments make complicated subjects like aerodynamics and weather easy to understand, so you’ll impress the examiner. Plus, our Airman Certification Standards Study Guide cross-references every required task to the videos, making it easy to review for the checkride.

HD Maneuvers4. Dynamic in-flight video

Sporty’s courses are famous for their HD video and 3D animations. Not a boring ground school, we put you in the cockpit for a real world look at what flying is all about. You’ll see low instrument approaches from the left seat, and you’ll hear real world communications with air traffic control. Plus, each video segment includes helpful review notes for efficient studying, and many also have review quizzes to reinforce key concepts.

5. 27 fully-narrated hd maneuvers

In addition to the comprehensive video segments, Sporty’s Instrument Rating course also includes a detailed maneuvers guide. All 27 maneuvers you might be tested on are included, with a 3D animation of the maneuver, narrated procedures, common errors, and completion standards. It’s a great way to review for the checkride.

Test Prep Tools6. Powerful test prep tools

You’ll ace the written test with our interactive tools. Create customized study sessions from the actual FAA test questions and see the right and wrong answers, plus plain English explanations written by our team of CFIs. Detailed analytics show you which areas need the most help, and allow you to study only the questions you’ve missed. Then, take a practice test that simulates the real knowledge exam you'll have to pass.

7. Flight instructor tracking

We make it easy for your instructor to follow your progress through the course, so you always stay in sync with your in-person lessons. Invite a CFI to see your practice test scores and review your video progress.

8. Ask a CFI

If you're stumped by a difficult subject, talk to the experienced flight instructors at Sporty's. We have a team of over 25 CFIs on staff at our flight school, training students every day just like you, so they can offer quick, helpful answers. Just click the Ask a CFI button to send a message.

9. Complete training syllabus and ACS

Research shows that pilots learn better when they use a high quality syllabus. We include a complete Training Course Outline as part of our course – the same one we use in our flight school. It includes detailed outlines for both ground and flight lessons. Think of it as a bridge between your at-home study and flight training. Our course also includes the full text of the FAA’s Airman Certification Standards (ACS) - your guide to the checkride - and cross-references each task to the video segments.

When you buy a Sporty's course, you're gaining access to a a training platform that's always up to date and always improving. We are continually adding new video segments to reflect new regulations and technology. We also refresh our FAA test question database regularly, so you don't study outdated topics. not complete
i was eager to get started on this course after having finished my private pilot training and while it gives an good overview of IFR training, i've had to search out other materials to supplement what's given here. most of what's included in the course can be found searching topics on youtube and for that reason and the aforementioned i would not recommend it as a complete training system.

Issues detract from good product
Course is solid BUT, there are a couple very aggravating issues. The biggest is the download button. It's tiny even on a large tablet. I had to hit it up to seven times to get it to stop opening the video and download it. The other is the large black band of video player controls. Most of the videos put important text at the bottom of the screen. When you pause the video to take notes, the text is covered by this black band so you can't read it. The information isn't always presented in a linear fashion best for note-taking, but it's good info and the videos are easy to watch and seem mostly up-to-date.

Not detailed enough for me
This course seems to make a lot of assumptions about what you know. If I had not already been watching a TON of YouTube videos about aviation and instrument flying I think this course would have just left me more confused.

They also completely skip some topics (but still provide questions) for the areas. BasicMed instrument flying being a primary example.

The test prep is great but I really felt like I would get more out of the content. I am having to do a fair amount of additional research to supplement.

Just a bunch of videos
Well produced, on topic videos, but no real depth to them, and I was very disappointed at the amount of actual teaching.

Great for students, not so much for CFII rating.
Not really enough specifics for a CFI-I rating. For an instrument student or someone needing a review on IFR work this would be perfect. I always liked Sportys training programs, this one just fell short of what I was told it would do for me as someone upgrading to Instrument Instructor. If you're an Instrument student or someone wanting to brush up on IFR, this works. CFI looking to upgrade? Find another program.

I passed my instrument written today!!
I was able to pass my written exam with an 88% today! I went through the videos, and after that, decided to go through every single question (which took a while but was worth it). I made sure that I marked my missed questions, and questions that I felt were tough, and after a section, IE: Icing or Part 91 regs, I would review my marked questions until I would get them correct, which was so helpful. Once I did all of the questions, and felt comfortable with everything, I took a practice exam basically every day for the past week or two. I was getting anywhere from 81% to 95% on every test, and decided to take the real exam, where I got 88%. The only thing that was confusing was a few of the holding pattern entry questions, but that's about it. I feel like I saved a lot of money with this course compared to ground school at a real school in my opinion

Passed the Written and Prepared for Training!
I just passed the Instrument Written Exam with a 95% after going through the online videos and practice exams. I was consistently scoring 88% on the Sportys practice exams, so I think they are at least as tough as the FAA exam.

I felt like I learned a lot more from the videos than just what was required for the test. There were a lot of real-world insights that I really appreciated. I highly recommend this course!

how long is online access?
A shopper on Aug 22, 2016
BEST ANSWER: There is no expiration date - you get free updates delivered automatically.
Can this be chromcasted?
A shopper on Jan 30, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes it can - the Android app supports Chromecast.
I want to have the availability to use this while I travel commercially, where I don't always have an internet connection. If I get the Ipad/Iphone app choice, can I access it also on my Mac Computer offline if I download it?
craig w on Sep 21, 2016
BEST ANSWER: You don't even have to go go the Mac if you don't want to. On the Ipad version it gives you the option of streaming the video, or downloading it. If you're going on a trip, just download 5 or 10 episodes or however many you think you can watch in the time span you'll be gone. It just takes up your data on the iPad, so when you're done or return home, delete them off of your device.
Is an Android App available?
Mark W on Sep 6, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes there is - phones and tablets!
Do you get an endorsement, after completing the course satisfactorily, to take the knowledge test? Or must you still have a cfi signoff?
Ed W on Jan 14, 2017
BEST ANSWER: We will provide the signoff - no CFI required.
Do I have to have apple tv to stream the course to my Samsung TV?
Wayne on Jan 7, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Easiest option to stream the video you'll need to use ROKU or directly through the internet. If you can use a web browser on your TV and type the website address, login and password it should work. I use ROKU and my laptop. Works perfectly that way.
Does it work on lap top that is not apple product?
Minsu K on Dec 26, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes, it will work on any web browser. We recommend chrome.
Will this course log progress in Garmin Pilot like it does into ForeFlight?
Mike N on Nov 1, 2018
BEST ANSWER: No, it does not work with the Garmin Pilot.
Is this course/ground school certificate still usable for the helicopter ifr training?
Karl A on May 29, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The course will provide you with the IFR knowledge. The endorsement that you receive is specific for an instrument airplane. You would need your instructor to provide the endorsement for the knowledge exam.
I'm looking at buying an iPad- but I'm not sure how much memory space I need for Sporty's and other aviation apps, etc. can you give me an idea what kind of space Sporty's requires?
Thank you
Daniel S on Sep 7, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Agree with the other answer. On my iPhone, which is the same as the iPad, under settings it tells me the Instrument course only takes up 73.3MB. You stream the videos. There is an option to download videos, if you are going out of wifi or for whatever reason want to have access to the video where you cannot otherwise stream it. But if you don't download the videos and store them on your local memory (iPad or iPhone) then the program itself only takes approx. 75MB...not much.
If I purchase the DVD series do I have access to the online course?
Nolton B on Mar 13, 2019
BEST ANSWER: No, but if you like to upgrade. You can purchase the online course with access to the app as well for $100.00. Just return the DVD's to us and request that you be upgraded.
How do I access the course from my iPhone? I can’t remember the website or address and can’t find it on Sporty’s website.
A shopper on Mar 10, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Please go to www.sportys.com/mycourses.
Is there an upgrade option for Version 2 for those who have version 1 ? I have Sporty's Instrument V1.13 installed and have my IFR rating but would enjoy staying current using the latest version and seeing the added content.
A shopper on Jan 5, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Please send a screenshot showing all of the videos being unlocked or a receipt to support@sportys.com and we can give you access.
Does the Instrument course cover steam gauges, or is it G1000 only?
