There’s no software to install – just log in and start learning. Or use our dedicated mobile apps for iPad, iPhone, Android, Apple TV, and Roku, which allow you to download videos for offline viewing. Progress automatically syncs between all formats so you can start a study session on your phone and finish on your laptop without missing a beat.

Completion certificate2. Get your written test endorsement

When you complete the course, we’ll  give you the flight instructor endorsement to take the written test—instantly! You can take this endorsement to the FAA testing center, and log it in your ForeFlight logbook. It's complete preparation for the FAA Knowledge Test.

3. Pass all your tests—guaranteed!

Our course is so complete we guarantee you’ll pass all three tests: the written, oral and flight. Our video segments make complicated subjects like aerodynamics and weather easy to understand, so you’ll impress the examiner. Plus, our Airman Certification Standards Study Guide cross-references every required task to the videos, making it easy to review for the checkride.

HD Maneuvers4. Dynamic in-flight video

Sporty’s courses are famous for their HD video and 3D animations. Not a boring ground school, we put you in the cockpit for a real world look at what flying is all about. You’ll see low instrument approaches from the left seat, and you’ll hear real world communications with air traffic control. Plus, each video segment includes helpful review notes for efficient studying, and many also have review quizzes to reinforce key concepts.

5. 27 fully-narrated hd maneuvers

In addition to the comprehensive video segments, Sporty’s Instrument Rating course also includes a detailed maneuvers guide. All 27 maneuvers you might be tested on are included, with a 3D animation of the maneuver, narrated procedures, common errors, and completion standards. It’s a great way to review for the checkride.

Test Prep Tools6. Powerful test prep tools

You’ll ace the written test with our interactive tools. Create customized study sessions from the actual FAA test questions and see the right and wrong answers, plus plain English explanations written by our team of CFIs. Detailed analytics show you which areas need the most help, and allow you to study only the questions you’ve missed. Then, take a practice test that simulates the real knowledge exam you'll have to pass.

7. Flight instructor tracking

We make it easy for your instructor to follow your progress through the course, so you always stay in sync with your in-person lessons. Invite a CFI to see your practice test scores and review your video progress.

8. Ask a CFI

If you're stumped by a difficult subject, talk to the experienced flight instructors at Sporty's. We have a team of over 25 CFIs on staff at our flight school, training students every day just like you, so they can offer quick, helpful answers. Just click the Ask a CFI button to send a message.

9. Complete training syllabus and ACS

Research shows that pilots learn better when they use a high quality syllabus. We include a complete Training Course Outline as part of our course – the same one we use in our flight school. It includes detailed outlines for both ground and flight lessons. Think of it as a bridge between your at-home study and flight training. Our course also includes the full text of the FAA’s Airman Certification Standards (ACS) - your guide to the checkride - and cross-references each task to the video segments.

When you buy a Sporty's course, you're gaining access to a a training platform that's always up to date and always improving. We are continually adding new video segments to reflect new regulations and technology. We also refresh our FAA test question database regularly, so you don't study outdated topics. There's no additional fee or subscription to receive these updates - just log in and learn!

Flying Blind in Low IFR
Sporty's Instrument Rating Video Course gets 2 stars because Sporty's gave me a prompt refund after I watched the first few videos. The course itself gets one star.

I passed the instrument written exam a couple of years ago after taking a different well know video course. I have not been able to complete my instrument rating due to work, but I am ready to start again. I tried Sporty's course because I thought it would give me a different perspective from the other course I already took. All Sporty's course did was bore and confuse me. This is not an actual teaching video series. The narrator basically reads the FAA Instrument Flying Handbook so fast that sometimes his voice rises to sound like Alvin the Chipmunk. I timed one section and a list of seven "must know" pieces of information were enumerated in less than 30 seconds without explanation.

The initial video of an instrument flight was quite good and got my hopes up. That was followed by instructional videos with a droning voice and stock clips of a the back of a student pilot's head.

If you want to pass the instrument written, take a different online class that has instruction with explanations. Or try Sporty's course and call for a refund when you get frustrated.

Not so great
I was pretty disappointed with the course. It seemed like I spent $200 on an audio book version of the Instrument Flying Handbook. The information wasn’t organized in a way that made it easily accessible for a student who is just learning IFR operations. If I were an experienced IFR pilot who wanted a refresher this might have been useful. The videos themselves were very dull and did little to make the information easier to learn. I would suggest that the Sporty’s folks might want to hire someone with some flight instruction experience or other education experience to help them really make this course a great resource for those of us who are trying to get started. Unfortunately, I do not see myself investing in any other sporty’s products or recommending them until I see a major improvement in quality.

Exceeds expectations and works well.
Very good material and the ground school is well thought out. Between this and augmenting with exam prep software, I got a 93 on my instrument written exam five years after I got an 80 without a prep course. I picked this course because the presentation was professional, modern, and could be viewed on my computer, tablet, phone, and through a Roku channel.

I have used others — let me save you time — Sporty’s is the best
This has been extremely interactive and engaging. I have used other online options for my PPL and even tried the same provider, who I will not mention, and the difference from their PPL to their IFR course was extremely disappointing. Sporty’s is unique in that it is captivating, informative, and acts as a coach moving you through the process with quick quizzes after each video, and then explains why if you get one wrong — by taking you back to the video section and even giving text explanation of the FAR or section of the ACS that supports the question and answer.

This truly took a long time to develop this well, and the entire production team should be commended for excellent work! Thank you all!

how long is online access?
A shopper on Aug 22, 2016
BEST ANSWER: There is no expiration date - you get free updates delivered automatically.
Can this be chromcasted?
A shopper on Jan 30, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes it can - the Android app supports Chromecast.
Do you get an endorsement, after completing the course satisfactorily, to take the knowledge test? Or must you still have a cfi signoff?
Ed W on Jan 14, 2017
BEST ANSWER: We will provide the signoff - no CFI required.
I want to have the availability to use this while I travel commercially, where I don't always have an internet connection. If I get the Ipad/Iphone app choice, can I access it also on my Mac Computer offline if I download it?
craig w on Sep 21, 2016
BEST ANSWER: You don't even have to go go the Mac if you don't want to. On the Ipad version it gives you the option of streaming the video, or downloading it. If you're going on a trip, just download 5 or 10 episodes or however many you think you can watch in the time span you'll be gone. It just takes up your data on the iPad, so when you're done or return home, delete them off of your device.
I am currently working on the Sporty’s instrument course. Will my course update to the newer version or do I have to pay another $200?
A shopper on Oct 27, 2018
BEST ANSWER: If you are using the online or app course it will automatically update.
Is an Android App available?
Mark W on Sep 6, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes there is - phones and tablets!
Do I have to have apple tv to stream the course to my Samsung TV?
Wayne on Jan 7, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Easiest option to stream the video you'll need to use ROKU or directly through the internet. If you can use a web browser on your TV and type the website address, login and password it should work. I use ROKU and my laptop. Works perfectly that way.
Will this course log progress in Garmin Pilot like it does into ForeFlight?
Mike N on Nov 1, 2018
BEST ANSWER: No, it does not work with the Garmin Pilot.
Is this course/ground school certificate still usable for the helicopter ifr training?
Karl A on May 29, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The course will provide you with the IFR knowledge. The endorsement that you receive is specific for an instrument airplane. You would need your instructor to provide the endorsement for the knowledge exam.
I'm looking at buying an iPad- but I'm not sure how much memory space I need for Sporty's and other aviation apps, etc. can you give me an idea what kind of space Sporty's requires?
Thank you
Daniel S on Sep 7, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Agree with the other answer. On my iPhone, which is the same as the iPad, under settings it tells me the Instrument course only takes up 73.3MB. You stream the videos. There is an option to download videos, if you are going out of wifi or for whatever reason want to have access to the video where you cannot otherwise stream it. But if you don't download the videos and store them on your local memory (iPad or iPhone) then the program itself only takes approx. 75MB...not much.
Does it work on lap top that is not apple product?
Minsu K on Dec 26, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes, it will work on any web browser. We recommend chrome.
I have the old type steam gauges in my panel. Is this course for them or glass panel?
A shopper on Jan 20, 2020
BEST ANSWER: I took the course with just the barest minimum of steam gauges. The course is "mostly" centered around steam gauges but includes a couple sections on GPS and a separate section specific to glass panel. Note that the FAA written test does include occasional questions concerning GPS so even though you may only have steam gauges in the cockpit, do not neglect watching the additional sections. Hope that helps -
Does the certificate of completion expire or have a valid period within which I have to pass my written exam?
A shopper on Jan 25, 2020
BEST ANSWER: No, it does not.
Does this ground school count as an approved at home course study to obtain the IFR license and what proof is required for the practical test?
Summer P on Sep 20, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Yes, it does count as the ground school. You will have the complete test results from the FAA exam.

How do I access the course from my iPhone? I can’t remember the website or address and can’t find it on Sporty’s website.

Is there an upgrade option for Version 2 for those who have version 1 ? I have Sporty's Instrument V1.13 installed and have my IFR rating but would enjoy staying current using the latest version and seeing the added content.
