The most affordable TSO-certified charging port

Almost everything pilots use these days requires charging, whether it’s an iPad, ADS-B receiver, or video camera. Pilot report

Pilots ask if Stratus Power will charge a full-size iPad during flight. Good news: it actually can charge two iPads simultaneously. There are two reasons why this is possible:

  1. It provides dual 2.5A, not 2.1A. Appareo engineered each port with a max output of 2.5A, knowing that 2.1A just isn’t enough to keep an iPad powered while it’s in use.
  2. Each port delivers 2.5A independently. Other common dual chargers are rated 2.1A for each port, but they actually share 4.2A between the two. With those chargers, if one device draws 2.5A, the other port is left with only 1.7A. We designed Stratus Power so the charging ports are independent — meaning each port provides 2.5A at the same time.

Here’s what one pilot had to say after a long flight experiment…

"I am a heavy user of ForeFlight on my iPad. Previously, I used an adapter (2.1A, 12V) in the cigarette lighter, but the iPad would totally lose its charge after about 6-7 hours.

I installed two Stratus Power units on my Seneca, and then over the weekend I went on a couple of relatively long flights (6 hours). For my test, I intentionally started the trip with only a 75% charge on the iPad. I plugged it into the 2.5A Stratus Power unit, and by the end of 3 hours while running ForeFlight, the iPad was fully charged! There is a world of difference between the 2.1A chargers and your 2.5A charging ports. Needless to say, I was extremely pleased."

Greatest charger of all time!
As we all know in GA today, we are reliant own many devices that must be charged to be effective and useful. I installed this in my Bonanza and the only question is why I didn't do it sooner. Took my iPad mini with 12% and my iPhone with 4% and charged them fully while in use airborne in just over 1.5 hours. Easy to install and worth every penny! Putting one in the King Air 350 and Baron next!

Read installations book first before buying
Unless you have avonics tools , to crimp make your own connector, then it might be worth it, you have to make your own harness with the two very small pins and receptacle , they send you . Or pay someone with the special crimped.

CdnCardinal on Mar 23, 2017

How does this tie in to the planes electrical system?

I don't know what I'm missing here, but isn't this a $350 lighter plug?
A shopper on Mar 16, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It also provides dual 2.1 amp outlets. The lighter plug in many aircraft (including my Cirrus SR22) cannot support 4.2 amps of current draw.
What is the size of the hole required to install it in the panel?
David G on Mar 16, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The size listed in the answer above is the size of the box that sits behind the panel. The actual hole in the panel is nominally 1-1/4" (1.23" on my sample). There is also an anti-rotation tab about 0.1" tall for which a slot needs to be cut.
What is the difference in capacity, utility and performance of this TSO'd device compared to a dual 2.1a USB adapter plug-in for a cig lighter socket?
A shopper on Mar 20, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Both provide a 2.1a usb Plug in.
I just received one, but not yet installed. I see there is a recent change to the amperage. How can I tell if it is the newer 2.5 amp version?

does it generate any significant heat in the avionics panel?
Gordonhall on Jul 31, 2019
BEST ANSWER: NO. I run both ports continuously when I fly and have noticed no unusual heat build up. I have used this product for about 2 years in my Bonanza. It also does not generate any interference hum etc., in my com. panel or radios.
Hi, this is isolated charger?
A shopper on May 23, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Yes, on its own breaker
Is this charger equipped with noise filter? I bought the lower priced USB plug several years ago from Sportys which caused considerable noise through the comm radio. Many pilots have had this problem with Sportys USB charger plugs.
I finally had my avionics guy build one. Dual USB 2.5 amp each plug, noise filtered, and completely portable from plane to plane. About the size of an iPhone and cost of $100. It works perfect. Sportys should retail his unit.
Greg G on Sep 18, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It is built into the unit and works flawlessly! I actually have THREE mounted in my airplane - one on the left side for the pilot, one on the right side for the copilot, and one mounted in the nose baggage area which powers the GoPro cameras mounted on the outside of the airplane. My avionics includes Garmin 750/650, Insight G4 and TAS1000, with Sandia 340 and lots of other stuff. No problems or complaints - just praise (and that is after 3 months and 95 hours of use)
Stratus Power wiring. I believe such a device can be installed by the owner/repairman in an experimental airplane. But does the product come with wiring for ease of installation?
A shopper on Jun 13, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It does come with the special connector and pins that mate to the back of the unit. You supply your own wire and breaker / fuse to connect to the aircraft electrical system. It only takes a power and a ground wire to hookup. You do need a crimp tool for the pins to attach them to the wires.
Can this be installed in an R-44?
Chris F on Apr 27, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Yes we did and works fantastic, it keeps my IPad with full charge

Is this compatible with 24 Volt Systems ??
Bruce W on Mar 15, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It is compatible with both 12 and 24 volt systems.
To connect a GoPro camera that is connected to a headphone jack they stipulate that you can't use aircraft power. As I understand it the issue is ground loops, between the audio system and the power system. Does this device provide isolation?
