The power connector is the weak link in design, and subject to movement or damage. If the power cord disconnects the unit runs well on the AA or AAA batteries, but there is no alarm/alert until the iPad overheats. It will cool down on batteries. (the iPad Lightning connector and x-naut power are separate cords)March 23, 2020Purchased

My old leather case was not vented but it had a cover I could close with a clip to hold notes I could write on when closed. This unit has no cover so can't use the screen as a writing surface for notes.. I would much prefer both being available, along with the cooling, and not requiring some other device strapped to the other leg as a writing surface. Your device is of good quality and does cool, but I'd really like a combined solution.September 8, 2019Purchased

Last week the unit flatlined on me due what was obviously a bad soldering joint by the USB power port. The reason for such a low rating was the very poor support from X-Naut (good luck trying to get their phone #). I did get an email response from them saying "sorry but you are 1.5 months out the warranty period...and you are on your own"...July 26, 2019Durability5 / 5Reliability5 / 5Performance5 / 5Ease Of Use5 / 5Value5 / 5Would You Recommend?YesThe X-Naut Cooling Case is perfectBefore I purchased the X-Naut, I read some negative comments. One person said that it wasn’t quiet. I disagree. It’s about as noisy as a battery powered personal fan. It is much quieter than the aircraft’s avionics cooling fans. It’s so quiet. Another negative comment indicated that for $200, they should throw in a power cord. I bought a 3’ cable for $5. Some people prefer 3’ and some some prefer 6’. I think it’s smart to let the consumer pick out the power cord that works for him or her.
I fly in Arizona year round and in the summer, iPad overheat has always been a problem. The X-Naut keeps the iPad very cool. If you don’t have a USB plug in your airplane, to economize, you can use rechargeable AA batteries.July 3, 2019Purchased

I had three ipad failures and I even purchased a mini to have as a backup; however, since I started using it my iPad Air2 it has never over heated. Now I would like to find it for my mini.November 1, 2018Purchased
over 3 years agoDurability3 / 5Reliability2 / 5Performance2 / 5Ease Of Use4 / 5Value1 / 5Would You Recommend?NoWish there was an alternativeFor $200 I would at least expect a USB cable to be include. I also would expect it to be thermostatically controlled. Unit runs continuously once turned on. Documentation shows numbers/adaptors for different sized iPads. None were included or installed. Fans make more than "very little noise. It does do the job of cooling the iPad.June 10, 2018Durability5 / 5Reliability2 / 5Performance4 / 5Ease Of Use5 / 5Value3 / 5Would You Recommend?YesBetter than nothingLike many others, I got the black screen of death shortly before an approach and realized I needed this device to keep the iPad cool. The problem is, the unit shuts down after 20-30 minutes without warning, so the iPad still overheats sometimes. Not sure why it does this, but resetting the switch will make it run for another 20 minutes. So I still get black screen of death, but just less often.November 2, 2017

Browse 26 questions Browse 26 questions and 43 answersWhen can we see this product for the Ipad Mini?X-Naut Cooling Case for iPad (Air 1-2 and Pro 9.7”)Can this be mounted directly into the instrument panel?BEST ANSWER: It has the standard 4 hole amps pattern on the back. This matches up with many RAM attachments. Flush mounting will probably not work well and make it pretty hard to access everything. It was really intended to be a portable unit. The IPad 10.5" and 12.9" are the IPADS now being manufactured. What are the tentative dates for producing units for these updated IPADS?BEST ANSWER: We currently do not have a date when these items will be manufactured for the iPads you mention. Please check our web site periodically for our new products.Where is the micro USB power input? I can't see it in the pictures. I'm trying to determine if a straight or 90 degree connector would work best. Thanks.BEST ANSWER: Either one works well. With my iPad in portrait mode the port is in the top right hand side. I do not put my iPad in the case until I have turned on the avionics master (plugs into my PSI audio panel) and I verify that the fans are running. I have them on the bottom of the case.I fly a Cirrus SR22 and have had the iPad overheating problem. I've noticed that many replies mention the RAM mount, however, in a Cirrus with the non-standard yoke the RAM mount doesn't seem like an option (unless there is a good way that someone can recommend for a Cirrus aircraft?)
I worry with the knee board add on in a Cirrus if I'm going to be right back in the same boat on a longer flight where the sun shines directly on the iPad on a kneeboard, except it will last a little longer before shutting off because of the fans? What portable battery works with the battery pouch?BEST ANSWER: I am not sure what you mean by portable battery. I use alkaline as my backup and I have a usb cable for primary power from my PS audio panel. It does not need a 2.4 amp source. Any USB charging pack would work because of the low amp requirements. My iPad has not overheated since I started using this device.Had the iPad overheating issue and just received my XNaut. Would like to get a screen protector to protect the new iPad I bight just for flying. Tried Zagg, Apple Store and Best Buy and could not find one with glare reduction glass. Sportys reviewed one called Armour Glass that apparently works good, but I am not sure it will fit under the XNaut side tabs. Reviews said it is poly Glass and can fracture. Anyone had any luck with a good screen protector that works with the XNaut? Thanks for the help.BEST ANSWER: Thanks for asking, however I don't use/need any glare reduction cover ... I have iPad mounted on a RAM pillar support and simply tilt the screen away from objectionable sun reflections ... also, Absolutely clean ALL finger marks from screen prior to flight ... otherwise reading the screen is quite annoying!Have other users had issues with this product not working as in the only review here?BEST ANSWER: I used it on a 95 day and my iPad Air 2 did not overheat. Before using this case, I would position towels over the iPad and have the air vent pointed directly on the iPad. Initially, when I had my iPad over heat on a Feb day back two years ago, I was on an approach into Erie PA and the unit turned off. I then purchased an iPad mini as a further backup just because the overheating issue is so bad with my bonanza and the iPad mounted on the Yoke. In addition to the 95 day mentioned above, I have flown 7 more hours with the cooling case and my iPad has not overheated and I have stopped protecting it from direct sunlight. What are the voltage and current requirements of a 12V charger when using the USB cable?BEST ANSWER: I do not know the amps; however, it works on my 12 volt system. I am using my PS 450 audio panel usb jack to power the fans. It does work on my cigarette lighter as well. I also have the batteries installed in the device as well in the event of a power failure. I have not had an overheating issue since using the cooling case. Will you be coming out with a cooling unit for the iPad Pro 12.9" ?BEST ANSWER: We haven't heard of any plans for this, but stay tuned. What is the size -exactly- of w & h of area covered on panel of the 9.7 Pro mount and the Mini mount?BEST ANSWER: How will it be mounted on the panel? or IN the panel? Refer to x-naut configuration FAQ on their website, for models and sizes but that is NOT the external dimension of the x-naut mount overall size. The mount is designed to have a Lightning USB cord, an audio 3.5mm cord, and be able to reach ON/OFF/BATT power switch on the sides. Therefore the exact overall outside dimensions would have to consider access to those functions, too. The x-naut 'edge' is relatively thin and consistent on all sides, a good estimate is probably 3/16" TO 1/4" added to the FAQ dimensions. Commonly mounted on a RAM mount system and can overlap other panel components. Can this be used as a knee pad or only as a mount? Is there another knee pad that can help with the overheat problem? Will an iPad 9.7 with the Armor glass installed fit in this product?BEST ANSWER: There is sufficient clearance between the retaining lugs and an iPad Air 2 screen to take one 0·25 mm thick business card, but not two. If your Armour Glass is 0·25 mm thick or less, therefore, I expect that it will be ok.this is compatible with ipad air 3?BEST ANSWER: I would recommend the 7901A.Is the 6 ft. micro USB charging cable (for stratus 1 & 2) mentioned in the "Recommended Items" the one that is needed to power this X-Naut cooling case?BEST ANSWER: Yes, it is.Will this mount take the ipad in a case?BEST ANSWER: No, it will not accept the iPad in a case. Will the fan cooler support the iPad mini in landscape orientation mounted on the instrument panel?BEST ANSWER: Yes, the iPad can be mounted in either landscape or portrait. Will this unit fit in the portal battery pouch on the x-naut iPad cooling mount?X-Naut Cooling Case for iPad (Air 1-2 and Pro 9.7”)BEST ANSWER: It will not fit in in that pouch.Does it come with the Ram Circle Base Hardware (RAM-B-202U-G) with it or do i need to buy it separate?BEST ANSWER: It does not include the Ram Circle Base. Will an iPad With otter box case, 7.75"x 9.875"x.75" fit the x-naut?BEST ANSWER: No, it won't work with much of a case on it. It's fairly form-fitting.When will the MyGoFlight adapter be available?BEST ANSWER: Hopefully within the next few weeks. We are working on it.Will the larger model fit a 4th generation iPad?BEST ANSWER: No. It will not. This fits iPad Air 1 and 2 as well as the 9.7" iPad Pro.Although I've never had an iPad over heat it looks neat (little expensive). What stats exist of actual iPads that have shut down in flight?BEST ANSWER: We're not aware of any stats on it. The rate seems to vary by iPad model (the older iPad 3 and 4 are notoriously hot), type of airplane (bubble canopy low wing is the worst) and where you fly (Arizona is obviously worse than North Dakota). Can this connect to a kneeboard from Sporty's or can it connect to a yoke mount? I use the ipad now on a kneeboard and the ipad heats up and turns off after about an hour on my knee. I need a solution quick or i can't rely on using Foreflight software.BEST ANSWER: It is a little large to work on a kneeboard - you could do it, but we wouldn't recommend it. It does fit RAM mounts, so you can mount it on a yoke. Use this to connect the X-Naut to a RAM arm: http://www.sportys.com/pilotshop/ram-circle-base-with-hardware-ram-b-202u-g1u.htmlIs the leg mounting unit included in the price? If not how much is it?
