Completion certificateGet your written test endorsement

Ace the written with our interactive test preparation program. You can create customized study sessions from the actual FAA test questions and see the right and wrong answers, plus plain English explanations written by our team of CFIs. Then, take a practice test that simulates the real knowledge exam you'll have to pass. We’ll even give you the flight instructor endorsement to take the written test—right from the course!

Pass all your tests—guaranteed!

Our course is so complete we guarantee you’ll pass all three tests: the written, oral and flight. Incredible 3D animations and dynamic in-flight video make complicated subjects like aerodynamics and weather easy to understand, so you’ll impress the examiner. Plus, our Practical Test Standards Study Guide cross-references every required task to the videos, making it easy to review for the checkride.

Be ready for real world flying

Learning to fly means a lot more than just passing a test. That’s why Sporty’s course goes beyond the textbook to teach you real world flying, making you a safer, more confident pilot. Special Air Facts segments with renowned aviation author Richard Collins are packed with no-nonsense tips you can use after the checkride.

Covers Private, Recreational and Sport

Our Learn to Fly Course is really three courses in one – you choose the license that makes sense for you. Get started with your training and progress toward your first solo, the critical first step for everyone. Then choose the Sport, Recreational or Private Pilot track – it’s all here! Plus, experience has shown that students learn most effectively when the training process is divided into manageable steps. So each module builds on the previous one, creating a building-block approach that saves you time and money.

Great Product sketchy policies

Product is as expected, seems they have some strange neurotic shipping policies that require you to jump through hoops to have your shipment held by UPS, oh and they ship via UPS - will not purchase anything shipped via UPS in the future.

Great Value

I purchased this in Dec.2016 I Planned to study through out the Michigan winter and take the FAA Written before starting flight lessons. Thanks to this Course I passed the Written with a 90%. I start Flight School this week. The only Suggestion or recommendation I would give is to add or include The FAA Airman Knowledge Testing Supplement Book (FAA-CT-8080-2G) to the course. The online version is difficult to work with depending on your computer system and screen size. Having the actual book is a much easier tool to use during your testing prep.

Good Package

Recommended

This was the best complete ground school package I could find. So far I'm impressed with the detail in the video series. All of the books and equipment in the kit are well made better than I expected. The flight bag is actually a good bag, not some cheap piece of crap that you'd expect from such a kit.

Pros:
Decent online learning course, though a bit long on certain subjects which aren't useful. Nice bag and flight computer.
Cons:
Not all of the books which this course references are included. You will notice the course references the PHAK during your after video quizzes. The PHAK or Pilots Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge, is an indispensable source of learning. So much so, that the courses reference this book almost 70-90% of the time, while referencing the included AFH or Airplane Flying handbook very little. This wouldn't be such an issue if 100% of the things referenced were available in the AFH, yet they are not. This means you need to go out and buy yourself another book if you want the hard copy. This is not to say the course isn't well put together, but I was finding myself confused when certain parts of the practice tests brought up questions which the AFH didn't cover and the video only touched upon. I brought my concerns to customer service, and their response was that the PHAK is not required for the course. Sure I guess if you have some other way of studying the things which are not included with this 'comprehensive' then I guess it wouldn't be very important.
Beyond the book, the course is very jumbled up. If you are looking for something which has structure and points out things which you NEED to pay close attention to, look elsewhere. While the course is separated into blocks, these blocks seem to have been put together by someone with ADHD. In one small section you go from airframe to weather back to airframe and then to radio communications while you are soloing, yet you have hardly covered ground operations and even the basics. It jumps around so much, you never have a chance to get a handle on what it is you are learning before you are on to something completely different. They call this course a home study course, but it's more like a secondary classroom to your training at an FBO or other flight school.

Overall decent online course, but it is lacking in direction and completeness. It would be nice if the course was put together into sections to learn, not Pre-flight, first solo dual ects... It would be nice if you would teach us about the airplane in chapter one.. then ground operations in chapter 2, an then radio communication in chapter 3... and so on.. This course is like someone took a deck of cards with the curriculum written on each card decided it would be fun to play 52 card pick-up, and then forgot to put it back into order.

In the delux version of learn to fly do you get the DVDs and online as well?
A shopper on Oct 30, 2016
BEST ANSWER: No, this kit includes only the online course.
How long is the course accessible online after purchase?
James M on Aug 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: There is no limit - you get free updates as we make them.
I first received my private pilot license in 1987. I accumulated about 15 hours of flying that year, got married and had kids and I stopped flying by 1988. I want to start flying again so I recently purchased the Microsoft Simulator X software along with the Saitek Flight Controls. I need to reintroduce myself to everything I learned in Ground School in 1987 with today's information. What is my best route to take to start flying again. I would like to take a ground school course at home while practicing on the Microsoft Simulator software then head out to an airport to fly with an instructor. Is this the best route? Can I take a ground school class at home?
Malcom K on Jan 28, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Malcom,
Since you have some time and did complete your PPL I would say that this course would be a good way for you to get current again and brush up on the current rules and regs. I used the course to complete my PPL after a 10 year break between when I started flight school and was able to complete my PPL. It worked out great! It was much easier than sitting in a classroom and it allowed me to move at my own pace. It helps to have at least some working knowledge of the FAR/AIM and aeronautical knowledge to really make the course beneficial to you but if you do not remember anything, no worries, the course does go through even the basics. Overall, I highly recommend the course. I know some people do not like the online/DVD approach to ground school but to me it is the way of the future and I enjoy it a lot more. Hope this helps you!
can i upgrade the log book into a professional log book ?
eric p on Mar 9, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, we can upgrade the log book for the difference in price. Please just place in the order comments that you would like to have the senior log book and we will take care of it.
Is "Sporty's Deluxe Learn To Fly Course Kit (Online)" certified as an approved FAA training provider? Is it certified in accordance with Title 14, Code of Federal Regulations part 141? I don't want to buy this kit and than find out that I wasted my time and money because the FAA doesn't accept the Sporty's pilot training kit as an appropriate training course to satisfy the completion of the ground-training when I try to take the knowledge test.
A shopper on Mar 1, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Our course will satisfy the completion of the ground training for the written knowledge test. We also provide the endorsement required to take the written test. With a part 141 flight school the training materials that the flight school uses would have to be certified as part of the 141 training program.

Sporty's Academy is a part 141 flight school and the learn to fly courses are used as part of the training program.

A shopper on Feb 18, 2017

TED G on Feb 11, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The Embroidery option will apply to the flight bag.
I see a Laptop in the pictures, it is included?
Marco C on Jan 25, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The Laptop is for illustration of the online course. The Laptop is not included.
