2017 Edition Now Available

Our award-winning courses have helped over 50,000 pilots learn to fly or add a rating, but we're never standing still. The Sporty's Academy team is constantly adding new content and innovative features to make our Learn to Fly Course the best training product in aviation. For 2017, we're proud to offer a full suite of upgrades that make flying safer, easier and more fun.

  • New HD video and animations - over 5 hours of it - so you can see what flying is really like.
  • New video segments cover hot topics in aviation, like ADS-B weather, angle of attack indicators, iPad apps, and more.
  • Up-to-date test prep questions and figures, so you don't waste time studying old questions.
  • Integrated Airman Certification Standards, with video segments cross-referenced to ACS sections.

Why Sporty's course? Here are 7 reasons:

1. Save time and money

For the cost of a single flight lesson, our course will save you hours of time in the air and hundreds of dollars. The step-by-step video lessons are better than ground school, helping you prepare for your next flight lesson ahead of time so you spend less time reviewing and more time learning.

Completion certificate2. Get your written test endorsement

Ace the written with our interactive test preparation program. You can create customized study sessions from the actual FAA test questions and see the right and wrong answers, plus plain English explanations written by our team of CFIs. Then, take a practice test that simulates the real knowledge exam you'll have to pass. We’ll even give you the flight instructor endorsement to take the written test—right from the course! You can take this endorsement to the FAA testing center.

3. Pass all your tests—guaranteed!

Our course is so complete we guarantee you’ll pass all three tests: the written, oral and flight. Incredible 3D animations and dynamic in-flight video make complicated subjects like aerodynamics and weather easy to understand, so you’ll impress the examiner. Plus, our Airman Certification Standards Study Guide cross-references every required task to the videos, making it easy to review for the checkride.

4. Be ready for real world flying

Learning to fly means a lot more than just passing a test. That’s why Sporty’s course goes beyond the textbook to teach you real world flying, making you a safer, more confident pilot. Special Air Facts segments with renowned aviation author Richard Collins are packed with no-nonsense tips you can use after the checkride.

5. Includes the new Airman Certification Standards

Sporty's courses are famous for being the most up-to-date and complete training products available. That focus continues with the FAA's introduction of new Airman Certification Standards (ACS). Our Learn to Fly Course includes the full text of this document - your guide to the checkride - and cross-references each task to the video segments. Our course also emphasizes deep understanding instead of just memorizing questions, something the FAA now discourages.

6. Covers Private, Recreational and Sport

Our Learn to Fly Course is really three courses in one – you choose the license that makes sense for you. Get started with your training and progress toward your first solo, the critical first step for everyone. Then choose the Sport, Recreational or Private Pilot track – it’s all here! Plus, experience has shown that students learn most effectively when the training process is divided into manageable steps. So each module builds on the previous one, creating a building-block approach that saves you time and money.

Modular training

7. Three convenient formats available

Study anywhere, anytime – choose from DVD, online or on iPad. Your time is valuable, so we offer our complete course in a variety of formats to suit different needs. Choose the one that is best for you. Every feature of our complete course is available in each of the three formats, so you can study on your TV, Mac, PC, iPad or iPhone. I watched the introductory DVD - GREAT!

I watched the introduction DVD for private pilots and it was around 2 hours long. The course was very excellent in how it was presented. The video was good quality and the quality of the content was very good and easy to follow. This was a user-friendly experience. Much like everything Sporty does, this is very high quality. Good job to those who produced it. Thank you.

Great course!!!!

My husband has been flying for years and told me about a year ago that if I wanted to take flying lessons myself, he would pay for them. Guess he thought I wouldn't like it and would quit, but guess what? I love flying and am working on my license.
About 2 months into lessons, he was dragging out all of his old study books and aids for me to use, but I decided to purchase the learn to fly course for my iPad. I love the layout, and since my instructor uses the Sporty's training syllabus, everything flows together nicely. But the most important thing is this: six months after starting the course, knowing absolutely nothing at the beginning-I walked out of my written exam with a score of 95%. I honestly credit that totally to the course and specifically the study buddy test prep. That score is on the "Honors Board" at my flight school for being the highest score so far (along with my husband's, also a 95)among our students.
I have done my initial solo and working on the cross-country segment. I am still going back to the course frequently to brush up on procedures, maneuvers, and just general knowledge in preparation for the oral and check ride.
Get this course! It is well worth the money! I am such a big fan of this product there was no question what my husband would get for his birthday recently: the iPad course for his instrument rating!
Thanks for a great product!

Very pleased!

As a doc, I'm very busy. I like the fact that...
1. All I have to do is reach for my iPhone to study and view the videos.
2. The videos are just a few minutes long, so I can utilize little bits of time to study.
3. I can download the videos for offline viewing, like on a commercial flight.
4. It's easy to go back and review certain topics.
5. The quizzes are placed at appropriate points in he series.
So far... two thumbs up!

Not sure if it is worth the cost.

I am not new to flying, and have worked on a medical helicopter for many years. I am new when it comes to being a pilot in control of the aircraft. Based on what I already know and what I am getting out of the Sporty's videos, I am not sure if it is worth the cost of $199.00 for it. I will however be happy to give my final review on completion of the course.

This is a great product. The video content was excellent. It was presented in an easy to understand fashion. The FAA Written Knowledge Practice Test questions were invaluable! After completing the requirements in Sporty's Learn To Fly Course, Sporty's sent me my logbook endorsement to take the FAA Written Knowledge Test within a few hours. Thanks to this course I easily passed my FAA Written Knowledge Test on the first try! I highly recommend this course, as the price is very reasonable when compared to going to hours and hours of ground school.
