Made for ForeFlight

Stratus™ is the simple-to-use, pocket-sized, wireless receiver that transforms your iPad into the ultimate flight tool. Get subscription-free weather, GPS information, ADS-B traffic and backup attitude – all integrated with ForeFlight Mobile. The top-of-the-line Stratus 2S offers additional features and even better performance, but with the same pilot-friendly design that has made Stratus the best-selling ADS-B receiver in aviation.

Subscription-free in-flight weather

In-flight weatherYou can view in-flight weather on your iPad, including NEXRAD radar, METARs, TAFs, TFRs, AIRMETs, SIGMETs, NOTAMs and more. It's updated every 5-10 minutes and there are no subscription fees – ever. Plus, Stratus Replay allows you to turn off the iPad screen in flight and save battery; when you turn the screen on again, Stratus will automatically send all the weather information you missed. This can double your iPad's battery life.

Stunning synthetic vision display

Synthetic visionForeFlight's Synthetic Vision feature rewrites the book on situational awareness. With luminous terrain, night sky view, hands-free declutter, and a brilliant obstacle awareness system, ForeFlight with Synthetic Vision will forever change the way you fly. With Stratus 2S, ForeFlight's synthetic vision really comes alive. The built-in AHRS drives a super responsive pitch and bank instrument in the center of the Synthetic Vision view. In an emergency situation, you’ve got a backup glass cockpit on your iPad.

Dual band ADS-B traffic

TrafficStratus 2S includes a dual band (978 MHz and 1090 MHz) ADS-B receiver so it can display traffic information right on the ForeFlight Maps page. See relative altitude, climb/descent rate and projected track. Picks up all aircraft equipped with ADS-B Out as well all aircraft equipped with Mode C transponders (if your airplane has ADS-B Out in the panel). Note: ADS-B traffic is limited if your aircraft does not have ADS-B Out installed in the panel.

WAAS GPS Powers track up and terrain

TerrainWith the built-in WAAS GPS receiver, Stratus allows you to view moving maps, track up displays and high resolution terrain maps in ForeFlight. The smart GPS locks on fast and typically provides 1 meter accuracy. Replaces the need for a separate GPS receiver--Stratus has it all!

Built-in AHRS for backup attitude

Built-in AHRSStratus includes a complete Attitude Heading Reference System (AHRS) for backup attitude information in the cockpit. It aligns itself automatically, so you can just turn it on and fly. Now you can view a backup attitude indicator, GPS groundspeed and altitude on your iPad--in a beautiful split screen mode right in ForeFlight. (Not to be used for primary reference.)

Automatic flight data recorder

Flight data recorderStratus is the first ADS-B receiver to offer a complete flight data recorder system. When this is enabled, Stratus automatically records your flight--complete with GPS position, altitude, speed and attitude. Flight logs are saved in ForeFlight, and can be viewed online, in Google Earth or in the CloudAhoy app. Ideal for proficiency flights and CFIs. Learn more in this blog post

Pressure altitude sensor

AltitudeWith its built-in barometric pressure sensor, Stratus 2S allows ForeFlight to display both pressure altitude and GPS altitude. Plus, ForeFlight’s automatic Cabin Pressure Advisor alerts you when you might need oxygen by flashing a message anytime cabin altitude exceeds 12,000 or 25,000 ft - perfect for turbocharged or pressurized airplanes.

The Stratus Platform

Seamless integration with ForeFlight mobile

ForeFlight integrationStratus is the only ADS-B receiver that works with ForeFlight, aviation’s most popular app. That’s because Stratus was designed from the ground up to integrate with the app, so you can view complete status information right from the moving map page. Stratus simply works the right way.

Designed to work with the Stratus ESG transponder

ADS-B outGet a complete traffic picture when you add Stratus ESG - the only ADS-B Out transponder made specifically for Stratus. This all-in-one solution, which includes a built-in WAAS GPS, meets the 2020 FAA mandate, and offers improved reception and full-time power for your Stratus portable.

Pilot-friendly design

  • Easy one button operation - just turn it on and fly.
  • Completely wireless - can be mounted anywhere.
  • Outstanding battery life - over 8 hours for all-day flying.
  • Enhanced reception - no external antennas required.

From the Press

"The standby instrument presentations on a tablet (at least an iPad and ForeFlight) have reached a level of sophistication that, in my opinion, allow a high-performance single-engine piston airplane to be safely flown to VFR conditions in an emergency. It's far easier than partial panel flight using a turn coordinator."

- Rick Durden, The Aviation Consumer

"We flew with the Stratus 2S portable ADS-B receiver for over a year to see how it would hold up. It proved solidly reliable in virtually all weather."

It’s seriously awesome.
Foreflight on my iPad is the most valuable asset I’ve ever had in the cockpit in 50 years of flying. The Stratus 2S just made it even more valuable, with Incredible accuracy, weather and traffic info.

Fantastic piece of equipment! I have glass cockpits so this serves as a back up. For those without them, this would be a great tool to assist the pilot.

Stratus 2
This was my fifth trip coast to coast in my cessna. The stratus made the trip much less stressful. Being able to see the wx ahead, look up airports with courtesy cars and reasonably priced gas was invaluable.

Great purchase
Great gadget. It performs as advertised, having flown it all over the SW USA. Notes: The suction cup mount is included. The case is useless if you use the suction cup mount, since it all will not fit in the case, and I will keep Stratus in the mount because it is a snug fit. Remember to turn Stratus off after flight for optimum power conservation. It takes a couple hours to recharge.

As a student pilot this device is invaluable in airplanes that don’t have built in GPS. I love the traffic alerts, integrated weather and navigation.

Works great. GPS is accurate and the dual band adsb is valuable in a busy training environment. Only qualm is that it charges pretty slowly and kinda pricey. A scout does the same stuff so far as I know- might be wrong though as I have no experience with them.

good RX but locked out of all but foreflight
Pay top dollar for this and then you have to subscribe to foreflight to use it. Buy any other RX and it works just as well, all work with foreflight why spend extra on this? They specifically lock it out because Status is not there for the customer, it is there to sell subscriptions for foreflight....if you want no options of a EFB then this is your RX.

I had been using a home made stratux and a Bad Elf GPS and kept having connection problems and it would freeze adsb on ForeFlight as well as froze my iPad and drained the battery. Now that I’ve been using this stratus it is a world of difference. Easier to mount easier to use the AHRS works perfect ( stratux was very jumpy) if I could do it all over again I’d buy the stratus first. Best investment so far.

Will this work on an original iPad or do I need a newer one?
tdevo on Jul 6, 2016
BEST ANSWER: We recommend at least an iPad 2 for Stratus 2S, although an Air 1 or 2 would give you even better performance.
There is a note that says " Note: ADS-B traffic is limited unless your aircraft has ADS-B Out installed in the panel." What are these limitations? I'm purchasing to use in rental aircraft that are not likely to have ADS-B OUT
Don H on Jul 16, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Here's a good summary of the ADS-B traffic issue: http://ipadpilotnews.com/2016/01/ads-b-traffic-101-2/
Will Stratus work in Canada?
Alex G on Jan 8, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The GPS and the AHRS will work in Canada, so you'd have moving map and backup attitude. ADS-B traffic works but is limited in Canada. ADS-B weather does not work in Canada.
how well does it work for IFR flight? also, where does a person go to get an external antenna and will the system charge off of one of those reserve battery backup chargers?
A shopper on Oct 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: You sure can fly IFR. I've litterally flown coast to coast with more than a few hours IMC running on the Stratus with Forelight as my only charting info. Better nav than my certified on-board GPS. Certainly esier to use. I got a little USB power adapter for the cigarrette lighter port for power. One line feeds the Stratus and the other the Ipad. Have flown 9 hour days with no problems. I se no need for an external antenna. As long as the Stratus has a good view of the sky it seems rock solid.
Are the external antennas for the 2s required? How well does it work without them?
Greg M on Aug 21, 2016
BEST ANSWER: No external antenna required for ADS-B in. It works great just suction-cupped to the window. Some folks like to lay in on the dash, but I've found that it gets too hot up there.
Can this unit pair and run 2 iPads at the same time?
A shopper on Aug 3, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I usually run my mini iPad along with my iPhone on the yoke mount. Great combination, I use the iPad for mainly glass panel nav and the iPhone for airport info and weather info. iPhone info slightly less limited than the iPad, but still works like a charm. I also pack an extra iPad for back up.
Will it charge ok from a 28V DC cigarette lighter connection using the usb cable? Or is it only 12 v tolerant?
Paul B on Aug 29, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I have never had to charge in flight. The battery is good for at least 6-7 hours. It has a USB charging cord so with a suitable cigarette lighter adapter, it should charge.

My aircraft is 24 volt and I use dual amperage (10 amp/ 21 amp adapter) to charge my I pad if necessary and works well. I found the adapter at Amazon for a couple of dollars but I believe Sportys would have something comporable. To be sure, I would call Stratus and pose the question. Best from the horses mouth.
Good luck. Best device I ever purchased.
I use jeppesen don't use forflight, can this app still work?
Cynthia C on Dec 19, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Appareo Stratus and Foreflight are essentially made for each other and only each other....it's a shame that they don't open source it for better flexibility for ADS-B transceiver/Receiver options like other EFB and/or ADS-B manufacturers do....there is another EFB company that states on their website that their product will work with Stratus, but I believe that it is only with certain models of Stratus, and that there are glitches that interfere with smooth operation.
Is the update rate slow? If I am using this for GPS guidance with Foreflight and will it be slow to update on my iPad Pro. I have used a cellular signal and that is too slow.
Brett F on Aug 29, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Brett, the Stratus 2S receiver is excellent for VFR use and it is extremely accurate and fast. I've never noticed any lag time as far as GPS position goes. Also, the backup AHRS system and synthetic vision is excellent and extremely responsive. I'd highly recommend buying it. I also use it with iPad pro... Good luck...pedro
How much memory on iipad is needed to run forefight mobile ?
Curtis N on Jul 28, 2016
BEST ANSWER: AMAP. Depends on how you fly.
If you stay within a couple states...less. On a 16gig foreflight dedicated iPad mini - flying about SoCal, Colorado, Idaho, Wyo, UT, NMex, AZ, there's still plenty room for all that is needed including FARs, approaches, etc..

Some music, photos etc too.
Does it come with a mount?
A shopper on Jul 6, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes it does - it includes a suction cup mount for use on a side window.
Does this provide real time weather to Foreflight while in flight?
John L on Sep 29, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The short answer is "no". I bought mine to use as a strategtic tool for a VFR flight from Connecticut to Alabama and back. At times it seemed real time but this was due to the nature of the pop up thunderstorms which "popped up" as the term implies, but then just stayed in one place as opposed to moving rapidly as they do in the northeast. That said, it was a great tool to have to help decide when it was time to get on the ground as every afternoon it definitely got tricky. For real time tactical information you would need weather radar or a Stormscope as the info on the Stratus could be many minutes old by the time it is displayed for the first time.
Let me get this straight. Stratus II will give me pitch, bank, air speed, altitude, an HSI, synthetic vision, weather, and traffic (in) on my IPad as long as the batteries last for $900?
Darrell S on Oct 25, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yeah, you got that right. It's good for about 7 hours of flight time on battery power alone. If you plug in to a USB cigarrette lighter adapter it's good indefinitely. You may lose the weather and traffic links on occasion if there are no towers availble within line of sight but it works well in general. I'm running with 2 Ipads with Foreflight and get solid nav data. Have even flown several practice approaches stricly using the Stratus GPS data and it will put you right over the runway. The attitude data can be a little flaky. Not rock solid, but good enough to save your bacon in a no gyro situation.
Will this work with iPhone 6?
Patrick. M on Aug 31, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It works with my IPhone 6, my IPad and my instructors droid cell which runs a different software. I haven't had any problems.
I currently use foreflight with stratus 2s and also a garmin aera 660 with gdl 39, i would like to have the advantages of XM weather, should i get the gdl 51 or SXAR1 to have the whole picture, the idea would be to clean my cockpit from too many devices. any suggestions?

Garmin GDL 51 SiriusXM Receiver

SiriusXM Aviation Receiver SXAR1
Garmin GDL 51R Remote Mount SiriusXM Receiver
Garmin GDL 51R Remote Mount SiriusXM Receiver
BEST ANSWER: I am a long time user of XM weather, I think I am one of the first 100 original customers. I will not fly without XM. I have been using the SXAR1 with Foreflight since it first became available last December. Now I get all the XM on Foreflight. It is an excellent product, seamlessly integrated. The SXAR1 battery lasts over 8 hours, I cannot tell you how long it will last, as it has never run out on a day of flying. It is a really good solution. I think it is better than the Garmin as it is smaller, and it is cheaper. The Fore Flight XM subscription does not have the Surface Visibility Forecast, Freezing Level, NOTAMS, Special Use Airspace Status and Tropical Storm Tracks with Windfields Observed, nor all the icing information products that I was used to in the Pro subscription plan that I was used to. (NOTAMS, Special Use Airspace Status were never available on XM), and I would really like to see the Freezing level especially, and also the surface visibility forecasts added. I am hoping they will add all those to the XM as it is getting harder an harder to justify XM vs ADS B for many pilots. I fly to Canada regularly so the XM is the only option up there, as ADS B is not available in Canada.
Will stratus work with iPad mini without any problems if I also have Garmin gdl39 in use in same aircraft?
A shopper on Jul 27, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I would think that as long as you have Wi-Fi on your i-Pad mini and you get the Foreflight app / subscription, then it should work. I use a regular i-Pad and absolutely love the Stratus . I had the stratus 1 for 3-4 years, but it got to where it would not pick up any of the ground antennas and thus would not give me weather/storm radar on the i-Pad. The Stratus 2 is working great. Hope this helps
I use foreflight and rarely fly above 6000 MSL. I have a data plan on my ipad and the navigation and weather features have worked very well. This may be a very a naive question, but what does Stratus offer that I'm not already getting through my ipad and lower altitude flying?
Andwin123 on Feb 18, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Also note that you will not have any traffic with your data service - only Stratus receives traffic. Finally, there is a built-in AHRS so you have real time pitch and roll information with Stratus, which is not available with just the iPad GPS.
For general flying which is best the 1s or 2s? For low time flyers.
A shopper on Jan 10, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The Stratus 2S has more features than the 1S. Of course, there is a considerable difference in cost between the two units. If you choose to go with the 1S, you may find yourself initially very much satisfied. But over time, you may want to try the 2S, wondering how much more it offers.

Check if anyone in your area flies with either the 1S or 2S, and ask to see what it looks like. It could give you a sort of "hands on" feel of these Stratus units. Also, get their opinion(s). That might help to give you a better idea what would suit your needs while in the air. If your time in the aircraft will include IFR flights, the 2S has features that you will find will be well worth the extra amount.

Just the same as the other pilot's reply (Kevin Y) to your question, I also use the Stratus 2S. It is in a Beechcraft BE-58, flown here in Hawaii. But I agree with his thought, saying the 1S would be more than sufficient. It is probably safe to assume you have looked over the features of both units a few times already. Whichever Stratus unit you decide on, you will appreciate flying with a great product. It adds to enjoyment of flying. It really will. Best of luck to you!
Does the G Force Suction Mount work with Stratus? RAM mount fell off the side window twice on my last trip. RAM mount seems weaker than when we first got it 2 years ago.
Doug O on Dec 29, 2016
BEST ANSWER: it has worked great for me so far. I have mounted in several places and it has stayed stuck on every bumpy cross country flight on my cessna 150
My Stratus 1 USB Power internal USB power connector broke this weekend. Apparently it was a "known" issue, that the manufacturer knew about. So it looks like I need to buy another Stratus to replace the expensive hockey puck that I have now. Anyone know of any mechanical deficiencies in the 2s that I need to look out for?
Scott P on Dec 27, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The Stratus 2S is a very good product. It delivers everything the manufacturer advertises. It is very dependable. I cannot see any mechanical issues with the 2S. Using the Ram Suction Mount and Stratus Cradle, it would be safe to say that the 2S will withstand the anything the pilot can handle.

Have you inquired if your current Stratus unit could be repaired, before making the decision to purchase a new one?
Does the stratu have synthetic vision?
A shopper on Oct 18, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The Stratus 2 does not in itself offer synthetic vision. It provides the necessary feed to ForeFlight Pro that gives you synthetic vision. You have to have ForeFlight pro and not the lesser version to get synthetic vision. The Stratus provides ADS/B reception on both channels as well as GPS WAAS,attitude output to ForeFlight pro, and a number of other items to Fore Flight, but only ForeFlight pro gives you synthetic vision when using the Stratus 2 as the feed.
Will this work in Hawaii?
A shopper on Sep 27, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes. It was recently purchased, and the Stratus 2S is being used in a Beechcraft BE-58, Honolulu International Airport. Very accurate. Excellent display. Good supplement to any aircraft.

BEST ANSWER: Minor differences. The 2S has a different charging port, includes a barometric sensor.
does it work in the Caribbean?
A shopper on Apr 14, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes, it will work int he Caribbean as a WAAS GPS, It will not provide weather or traffic.
So, what are they paying for original units as trade ins ?
AJ F on Apr 13, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Your purchase is for a new unit.
Does your IPads have to be connected to internet service?
A shopper on Apr 1, 2018
BEST ANSWER: No, the iPad does not have to be connected to the internet. The Stratus unit will provide GPS and weather and traffic data.
Does this work in Philippines?
Achilles A on Mar 23, 2018
BEST ANSWER: It will work as a GPS and AHRS only in the Phillippines - no weather and very limited traffic.
The description says that the aircraft must have ADS-B out in order for this Stratus to provide complete traffic information. I am planning to use this in rental Cessna 172S airplanes with G1000 and equiped with ADS-B out however the rental company will not allow me to install any software or systems in the rental plane. I can customize the G1000 for my flight but nothing can be installed permanently into the plane. So my question is, can I use Stratus to take full advantage of the ADS-B out in the rental planes without permanently installing any hardware and/or software into the airplane?
Eric R on Feb 19, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes, you can use the Stratus to take full advantage of the ADS-B out in the rental plane with installing any hardware or software. This Stratus 2S is an "IN" receiver. With ADS-B out you will receive back a custom data packet that is received by the 2S.
