Introduced in the late 1930s as a transport aircraft, the Douglas DC-3 was adapted from its intended design to become the first successful commercial airliner. Thanks to commercial operators like Pan-Am, Delta, Braniff, and United, the type experienced rapid expansion to customers, helping develop the cargo craft into a passenger success.

During its service life, the DC-3 had a capacity of around 20-30 passengers, with a crew of 3 in the cockpit. Range was over 1,500 miles with passengers or cargo onboard and the aircraft is powered by a pair of Pratt and Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp engines. Propellors are tri-bladed, Hamilton Standard S23 series, with hydraulic constant speed actuation and feathering control. Total power is 1,200 hp from each engine, or 1,800kw combined output, propelling the aircraft up to its 257 mph maximum speed. Altitude ceiling is 23,200 ft, with a rate of climb of 1,140 ft/min and the cruising speed is 211 mph.

Operated by Aeronaves in the 1940s, this DC-3 flew alongside its successor DC-4 on passenger flights, with routes stretching out to Madrid and France. Plenty of this was thanks to Pan-Am and its 25% stake though, as expansion continued even throughout WWII. Based on the DC-3 registered as XA-FUV, this Die-Cast version has an accurate paint scheme, etched panel lines, pad-printed decals, rotating propellers, and detailed landing gear with a rotating tail gear for display. Includes a metal display stand. Measures 4”l with a 5.75” wingspan at 1:200 scale.
