History and Specifications:
Largest cargo aircraft in the world, or formerly the largest cargo aircraft in the world, the Antonov AN-225 Mriya (“Dream”) was result of the Soviet Buran Spacecraft program. Designed to carry the Buran on its back, the AN-225 measured 290 ft in wingspan and could carry up to 550,000 lbs. of payload internally or 440,000 lbs. on the upper fuselage. Powered by six Ivchenko Progress D-18T engines, the aircraft was rated for a top speed of 530 mph and maximum altitude of 36,000 ft with cargo onboard. Unloaded, the aircraft successfully completed several test flights to altitudes over 48,000 ft! Breaking 240 records in its lifetime, the AN-225 carried the largest single-item payload (a power plant generator) which was a whopping 210 tons, the largest payload ever airlifted at 280 tons, and the longest item ever airlifted (137 ft long wind turbine blades).
