This AT-38B Talon participated in the USAF’s “LIFT” program.
Designed to reduce the training load on pilots, the AT-38B Talon was developed for the USAF’s Lead-In-Fighter-Training (LIFT) program of 1975. Less expensive to operate than contemporary fighter aircraft, the AT-38B could carry gun-pods, rockets, and practice bombs, making it an ideal candidate for the program. Recognized as 63-8172, this AT-38B was assigned to the 479th Tactical Training Wing of Holloman Air Force Base during the 1980s. Retired in 1991 at the conclusion of LIFT, it was placed on display in 2004 at the National Museum of the USAF in Dayton, Ohio.

History and Specifications:
Introduced in 1961 to prepare pilots for modern jet fighters, the nimble T-38 Talon provides a wide flight envelope and excellent handling. Engineered with both instructor and trainee in mind, the Talon’s seating features 10 inches of added height in the rearward position, precise gunsights, and modernized avionics. Utilizing a “no-drop” bombing system, pilots can receive accurate feedback on their attack runs without deploying physical ordnance, reducing training costs and allowing multiple attempts without having to take off and land again. Since 1961, more than 1,100 T-38s have been manufactured, half of which are still active in USAF squadrons.
