History and Specifications:
Most advanced propeller-driven bomber of WWII, the Boeing B-29 Superfortress was designed for high-altitude conventional and nuclear strikes. Equipped with numerous radar systems for offense and defense, the Superfortress had computerized turret sights and the ability to drop bombs through cloud cover that would normally obscure targets. Constructed to ambitious requirements in the mid-1940s, the B-29 features an innovative high aspect-ratio wing design, which allowed the aircraft to have an impressive 357 mph top speed. Powered by four Curtiss-Wright R-3350 engines, the Superfortress could reach altitudes up to 31,850 ft and carry 20,000 lbs. of weaponry onboard. Manufactured between July of 1943 and August of 1945 across several different factories, a total of 3,980 Superfortresses were produced in the United States.
