If you’re training at a towered airport, you’ll eventually hear the phrase “cleared for the option.” It’s an ATC clearance that gives you flexibility to perform any one of several landing maneuvers: a full stop landing, touch-and-go, stop-and-go, or low approach/go-around.
This is especially helpful during flight training when you’re doing pattern work. Instead of individual request each time for your desired maneuver, the controller gives you permission to perform whatever maneuver you and your instructor planned for that approach.
Just remember, “cleared for the option” doesn’t mean “do whatever you want”—it assumes normal pattern operations.
CFI Tip: If you’re doing something unexpected—like a full stop when you’ve been doing touch-and-gos—let ATC know. The option clearance gives you flexibility, but good communication keeps everyone safe and out of trouble.
