How do I break through a training plateau?

Every pilot hits one at some point—a training plateau. You’re taking lessons regularly, but your progress suddenly stalls. Maneuvers that felt solid last week all of the sudden aren’t, and frustration starts to build. Don’t worry—this is a normal part of learning to fly, and there are ways to get past it.

Recognize That It’s Normal - Plateaus happen in every skill-based activity, from sports to music to flying. Your brain needs time to catch up and consolidate what you’ve learned. The good news? The breakthrough always comes.

Talk to Your Instructor - Your CFI has seen it before—probably a lot. Be honest about your frustration and ask for feedback. Sometimes a small change in lesson structure or sequence (for example, taking a break from landings to review ground reference maneuvers) can restore confidence and build momentum.

Change Up Your Routine - Try a different instructor, new training time, or even a new airplane. A fresh perspective can make old lessons click. Reviewing your flight videos or simulator practice between lessons can also reinforce learning.

Focus on One Goal - When you’re stuck, simplify. Instead of trying to “fix everything,” choose one specific skill and make that your short-term goal. Progress in one area often unlocks improvement everywhere else.

Keep It Fun - Don’t lose sight of why you started flying in the first place. Take a scenic flight, bring along a friend, or fly with no agenda other than enjoying the view. Getting back to the basics can reset your mindset.
