Boeing House 787-9 Dreamliner Die-Cast Model

This aircraft was the first operational prototype.

First operational prototype of Boeing’s 787-9 Dreamliner, this aircraft received the temporary registration of N789EX and was completed on August 24th, 2013. Prepared for maiden flight, N789EX departed Boeing’s Paine Field for the first time on September 17th and flew for 5 hours, 16 minutes. Logging 227 test flights and 596 hours of flight time, N789EX was withdrawn from Boeing’s Flight Test Program on January 3rd, 2015. Repainted into Air New Zealand colors, it was re-registered ZK-NZC and accepted by the airline on August 25th, 2015, as the 5th 787-9 Dreamliner in their fleet. Ferried to Auckland shortly after, ZK-NZC completed its first revenue-generating flight for Air New Zealand on September 1st.

History and Specifications:
Aerodynamically efficient and built to decrease carbon footprint, Boeing’s 787-9 Dreamliner was introduced in 2013 with launch customer Air New Zealand. Manufactured from nearly 50% of its weight in composite materials, the 787-9 reduces fuel consumption by 25% over most aircraft it replaces. Fitted with 250-325 seats onboard, the Dreamliner can weigh more than 571,000 lbs. fully loaded with fuel, and travel 8,700 miles non-stop. Cruising at speeds over 560 mph and altitudes up to 43,100 ft, the aircraft is powered by two General Electric GEnx-1B or Rolls Royce Trent 100 engines. Since introduction, 600 units of the 787-9 have been completed, with several hundred orders still unfulfilled for years to come.
