In the year 1915, the Royal Flying Corps of the UK needed an aerial recon vessel capable of spotting howitzer positions in front of the troops on the ground, intended to replace the previous B.E.2c from pre-WWI. The Royal Aircraft Factory, Armstrong Whitworth, and Bristol were the opponents for this request, with prototypes first being flown after 1916. The first designs would have less powerful engines and no weaponry, as their primary role was to survey enemy territory and be ready as soon as possible.

The F-2B Fighter that soon followed would take on a more powerful engine that made it faster than its predecessors, creating 275hp and reaching a top speed of 123mph. Range was 369 miles, with a service ceiling of 18,000ft in altitude. The airframe’s weight would rival most motor vehicles of the era, while still maintaining a tactical speed advantage over the road going counterparts. Weaponry included a single Vickers .303 machine gun facing forward, with an additional 1-2 Lewis Guns that the observer would be able to fire offensively.

The aircraft served from 1917 until 1930, when it was retired from duty in its role as a reconnaissance vessel, being outmoded by more powerful and agile fighters to come in the next few years. Die-Cast version features raised wing supports, panel lines, printed decals, and paint scheme that reflects an F-2B operated in Egypt circa 1917. Measures 7”l with a 10” wingspan at 1:48th scale.
