Stands up to abuse

Russ Hartley
Student pilot

“This headset is a great choice for flight training, because it will stand up to plenty of abuse, but it's comfortable enough to wear on long cross countries. It's also a good idea for spouses and non-flying passengers."

Plus: Just about indestructible
Plus: Undercut gel ear seals are comfortable
Minus: No Active Noise Reduction (ANR)
Minus: No cell phone or audio inputs

What cable do I need?

Most headsets come in multiple cable configurations. Choosing the right one is pretty easy, it just depends on what type of aircraft you fly.

This is by far the most common style, with separate microphone and headphone plugs (so-called PJ plugs). Almost every airplane ever built has these two plugs in the panel, so these headsets are universal. For ANR headsets, you will need to use AA batteries.

Sometimes called the "LEMO plug," this requires no batteries as it is powered by the panel. While many newer airplanes come with this option, most older airplanes do not without an aftermarket installation.

Helicopters use a single, shorter plug. An ANR helicopter headset will still need AA batteries unless the helicopter is equipped with a specific 6-pin LEMO connection.

A single 5-pin connector made for Airbus jets. When in doubt, the twin plug model is the most universal option for general aviation.
