Designed as a single-aisle, 5 seat wide airliner, the MD-80 is a narrow body jet aircraft originating in the 1980s as a continuation of the DC-9. As the second generation of the family, it had an enlarged wing and higher performance engines that surpassed its predecessor. In total, nearly 1,200 of the MD-80 series would be produced across 20 years of production. With a typical setup of 170 passengers onboard and two crew members, the MD-80 was capable of flying nearly 2,000 miles nonstop. At the back of the fuselage are two Pratt and Whitney JT8D-200 engines, which provide up to 42,000 lbs combined thrust on takeoff. Resulting top speed is 543mph, altitude ceiling is 37,000ft, and maximum takeoff weight is 140,000 lbs.
Last of the McDonell MD-80 family, the MD-88 features a new EFIS, or electronic information system compared to the analog models in earlier MD-82s. Created to fulfil an 80 aircraft order from Delta Air Lines, it serves as one of the operator’s narrow-body options in the fleet. Displaying the “Colors in Motion” livery of the early 2000s, it represented Delta’s movement away from traditional designs of the past. Die-Cast version has an accurate paint scheme, etched panel lines, pad-printed decals, and detailed landing gear. Measures 4.5”l with a 3.25” wingspan at 1:400 scale.
