Designed as a single-aisle, 5 seat wide airliner, the MD-80 is a narrow body jet aircraft originating in the 1980s as a continuation of the DC-9. As the second generation of the family, it had an enlarged wing and higher performance engines that surpassed its predecessor. In total, nearly 1,200 of the MD-80 series would be produced across 20 years of production.

With a typical setup of 140-170 passengers onboard and two crew members, the MD-80 was capable of flying nearly 2,000 miles nonstop. At the back of the fuselage are two Pratt and Whitney JT8D-200 engines, which provide up to 42,000 lbs combined thrust on takeoff. Resulting top speed is 543mph, altitude ceiling is 37,000ft, and maximum takeoff weight is 140,000 lbs.

Operated by Everts Air Cargo, this MD-80SF is one of the many “Special Freighter” variants developed by Aeronautical Engineers Incorporated. With a lower cost than the contemporary Boeing 737-400SF, the MD-80 line could carry up to 46,000 lbs of cargo on 12 pallets within the hold. Everts would receive the prototype by 2013 from AEI, with more to follow in the coming years. Die-Cast version has an accurate paint scheme, etched panel lines, and pad-printed decals, detailed landing gear, and display stand to show the model in flight. Measures 9”l with a 6.5” wingspan at 1:200 scale.
