History and Specifications:
Introduced in 1972 following the United States Navy’s “VFX” program, the F-14 Tomcat was an advanced, twin-engine aircraft for defense of vulnerable carriers. Designed for both speed and maneuverability in one single package, Northrop Grumman would fit adaptive “swinging-wings” for an increased flight envelope. Operated using a semi-automatic control unit, both wings have 48 degrees of motion. Primary used for air-superiority and carrier defense, F-14A models feature the Hughes AWG-9 pulse-doppler radar unit under the control of backseat weapons-systems-officers. Tracking targets at hundreds of miles away and deploying AIM-54 Pheonix active-radar missiles, the Tomcat is a formidable opponent on the battlefield. Produced between 1969 and 1992, more than 700 F-14s were manufactured by Northrop, with upgrades continuing until 1994.
