History and Specifications:
Introduced in the late 1970s as a modification of the F-4E Phantom II, the F-4G “Wild Weasel” specification was to fulfil Suppression-of-Enemy-Air-Defense (SEAD) duties. Fitted with an AN/APR-47 Radar Attack and Warning System in replacement of the M61A1 Vulcan Rotary Cannon and upgraded to later “WASP” computer software, the F-4G transformed into a dedicated ground-attack platform. Carrying the sophisticated AGM-88 HARM air-to-surface missile alongside conventional bombs and air-to-air missiles, “Wild Weasel” Phantom IIs now could hold their own against state-of-the-art air defense systems in the 1980s and beyond.
