F-5N Tiger II Sundowners Die-Cast Model

Lightweight and agile, the supersonic F-5E Tiger II was an evolutionary leap toward smaller combat fighter aircraft. Hailed for excellent reliability and reasonable cost of operation, it would soon become the aircraft of choice for US Navy training schools. Homed from NAS Key West in Florida, this F-5N Tiger II belongs to the VFC-111 Sundowners squadron. Performing adversary training missions over the Gulf of Mexico, skilled instructors teach their students air-combat-maneuvering (ACM) and basic-flight-maneuvering (BFM) with precision.

History and Specifications:
Entering service as a lightweight, subsonic, single-seat fighter jet for use by the USAF, the Northrop F-5E Tiger II was an advancement of its predecessor F-5A type. Characterized by its small footprint and agile maneuvering, the twin-engine fighter is capable of both air defense and strike missions from even the shortest runways. Featuring uprated engines, leading edge root extensions, and advanced weaponry, it superseded the earlier “Freedom Fighter” in almost every regard. Decked out with 4 underwing pylons, central fuel tank, and pair of wingtip launchers, it could deploy both air-to-ground and air-to-air ordnance. Additionally, two M39A1 20mm Cannons with 280 rounds of each are placed in the nose for close in combat. Remaining the aircraft of choice for fighter pilot training, more than 1,400 F-5F and F-5N models have been manufactured by Northrop Grumman.
