Last unit to fly the venerable F-8E Crusader, the VMF-235 "Death Angels" served valiantly during Vietnam.

Known as the “Last of the Gunfighters” during its service life, the design would feature highly swept wings on the top of the fuselage, with an unusual feature hidden below. Used for takeoff and landing on carrier decks, the main-wing with variable-incidence, allowing for enhanced view of the terrain below on approach. Designed to replicate an F-8E Crusader from the VMF-235 “Death Angels” squadron, this aircraft served in Vietnam between 1965 and 1968, stationed at Da Nang Air Base. Contributing over 6,000 sorties and 22 major operations during the war efforts, this squadron was the last to operate the venerable “Last Gunfighter” in active duty.

History and Specifications:
Making history on its debut, the early F8U Crusader was the first operationally capable jet to reach over 1000mph, piloted by Cmdr. Robert Windsor on August 21st, 1956. Accepted into service during the following years and redesignated F-8 in 1962, the design would undergo numerous changes, with duplicated control systems, increase payload capacity, and electrical navigation system. Transforming into an exceptionally capable fighter, it would be fitted with the uprated Pratt & Whitney J57-P-420 afterburning turbojet, which produces 19,600 lbs of thrust for the 15-ton aircraft. Armament wise, it carries four of the Mk.12 Colt 20mm Cannons, with 560 rounds combined ammunition, and a set of four AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles on forward launchers. For ground attack, later examples beyond the F-8E variant would be fitted with underwing pylons as well, providing up to 4,000 lbs of ordinance capacity.
