History and Specifications:
Fulfilling the need for a carrier-based fighter, the Vought F4U Corsair was introduced in 1942 as the primary aircraft of US Navy and Marine pilots. Built around the massive Pratt & Whitney R-2800 engine and massive propeller, it was difficult to handle but well-armed with six 0.50cal machine guns. Reaching speeds up to 400 mph, it could quickly catch up to enemy aircraft, dictating engagements and creating many aces over the Pacific. Produced between 1942 and 1952, a total of 12,582 examples were made between the facilities of Vought, Goodyear, and Brewster.
