Following trials of a single engine, monoplane design by Hawker Aircraft, this prototype aircraft was selected to be developed into a new fighter bomber for the Royal Navy. Introduced in 1947 and seeing conflict in just years during the Korean war, the Sea Fury would even take down an enemy Soviet jet fighter. Between its development and 1955, there would be nearly 900 of the type produced, with many of these built under license by other nations.
Powered by the massive Bristol Centaurus 18-cylinder engine, the Sea Fury was no slouch in the energy department, producing nearly 2,500 hp on takeoff and rivaling the American P-47 Thunderbolt. This resulted in a top speed of 460mph, range of 780 miles, and an altitude ceiling of 35,800 ft. As the mainline fighter bomber aircraft, the Sea Fury was equipped to carry 2000 lbs of external load, with up to 16 anti-tank rockets or multiple bombs across several pylons. Supporting these offensive weapons, a pair of 20mm Hispano Mk.V cannons were placed in the midsection of each wing, boasting 580 rounds of high-explosive or armor-piercing ammunition combined.
Flying for the Royal Navy’s 804th Squadron, this Hawker Sea Fury would see operation on both the HMS Ocean and HMS Glory as they sailed toward the Korean conflict in 1951. In less than a year, this group would withdraw from the region, headed to Singapore in wait of newer fighter aircraft to take on the Soviet jet fighters. Die-Cast version has an accurate paint scheme, etched panel lines, pad printed decals, detailed landing gear, and display stand to show the model in flight.
