The Wright brothers realized that Dayton, Ohio would not be a suitable area to test their early flight designs. An inquiry with the US Weather Bureau led to the discovery of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina as an appropriate testing ground with its sandy wide-open spaces and steady winds. Three years after arriving in North Carolina and testing multiple iterations of their Flyer, on December 17th, 1903 Orville lifted off the sands of Kitty Hawk for a 12 second, 120-foot powered heavier-than-air flight that inaugurated the Kitty Hawk Flying Club.
