Largest airborne vehicle in the world, the LZ 129 Hindenburg was constructed by the Zeppelin Company in Germany during the 1930s. Taking flight for the first time on March 4th of 1936, with several additional test flights occurring over the next two weeks, LZ 129 finally took passengers into the air on March 23rd. Seen above the 1936 Berlin Olympic games, more than 3-million citizens and visitors observed the airship for more than an hour, while 65 passengers onboard watched the games below.

History and Specifications:
Measuring 803.8 ft in length and 135.1 ft in diameter, the LZ 129 Hindenburg remains the largest flying object ever built. Intended to perform transatlantic passenger and mail flights, it was constructed from duralumin and filled with helium or hydrogen for lift. Designed to carry 50 passengers onboard with several dining and observation rooms, it was expected to drastically decrease travel time compared to ocean vessels. Completing the distance in less than 48 hours, where most boats took 5-10 full days, it became the quickest way to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Within one year of operation, more than 3,500 passengers and 66,000 lbs. of mail and freight had been transported by the LZ-129 Hindenburg.
