First supersonic aircraft to serve in the East German Air Force.

First supersonic aircraft to enter service with the East German Air Force, this Soviet MiG-19PM was delivered in 1959 as one of 12 units. Known as “Red 335” and denoted by the bright designation on the nose, it was operated by just one unit, 2nd Squadron of the JG.3 (3rd Air Wing). Becoming operational soon after, the 2nd Squadron took to gunnery practice, under strict security measures due to the fact it was the first supersonic aircraft in the nation. Moved to an unknown squadron from 1963 to 1968, the aircraft was phased out in favor of the MiG-21F which arrived much earlier than expected.

History and Specifications:
First Soviet-built production aircraft to surpass the speed of sound in level flight, the MiG-19 was developed in the early 1950s. Following several prototypes, the first completed example flew in January of 1954, and full production was approved within the next month. Continuing to advance the aircraft’s performance, continued development resulted in the MiG-19S and later MiG-19PM variants, former of which was the most highly produced edition. Between the two, MiG-19S aircraft had three GSH-30 30mm Cannons, while MiG-19PMs were armed with four RS-1U or RS-2U radar-beam-guided air-to-air missiles. Intercepting aircraft at the edge of Warsaw Pact territory during the Cold War and later utilized during the Vietnam war by North Vietnamese forces, the MiG-19 quickly found use in many combat theaters. Built in domestic and international factories, it is believed than more than 10,000 MiG-19s were produced between 1955 and 1960.
