This aircraft carried the Space Shuttle Enterprise.

Beginning life in 1970 with American Airlines, N9668 was purchased by NASA in 1974 for use as the carrier of Space Shuttle Enterprise. Performing the first wake-vortex studies within just a few months, N905NA was decorated with a yellow tail stripe and retained the beautiful red, white, and blue American Airlines colors along the fuselage. Flying just underneath a Learjet 24 and Cessna T-37B, N905NA was equipped with small smoke charges that let the trailing aircraft capture data on airflow from the wingtips, engines, and nosecone. Following completion of this program, the aircraft begun reconfiguration in 1976 where the interior was stripped out and replaced with numerous structural reinforcements.
