Flying for the first time in the 1930s, the Douglas DC-3 quickly became the world’s first successful commercial airliner.

Quiet, comfortable, and efficient, the DC-3 was hailed as the greatest air transport of its time. At the end of 1939, more than 90% of global flights were operated by this aircraft, with 30 foreign airlines. Expanding further to the military, it even saw use under the C-47 designation for use in troop transport or supply missions. Unequivocally transforming air travel forever, 14,000 commercial, military, and cargo aircraft have been manufactured, with more than 100 still in use today.

Introduced to the world under the name DST, or Douglas Sleeper Transport, the DC-3’s success was immediately felt across the globe. Carrying up to 30 passengers onboard with a crew of three in the cockpit, it could travel more than 1,500 miles non-stop. Powered by a pair of Pratt and Whitney R-1830 Twin-Wasp radial engines with more than 1,200 hp each, they spin tri-bladed, Hamilton Standard S23 series propellers. Top speed is over 250 mph, rate of climb is 1,140 ft/min, and the altitude ceiling is 23,200 ft. Decorated with the classic silver and blue Pan American Airways System livery, this specific DC-3 flew in the 1940s with passengers around the world. Polished and reflective, it remains an icon of early commercial air travel.
