Why buy a portable oxygen system?

Increase pilot safety

Hypoxia is a far more common problem than most pilots admit, and is not limited to pilots of turbocharged or high performance aircraft. Many pilots need oxygen below the 12,500 feet specified in the FARs. Carrying a portable oxygen system is the only way to protect against the serious and difficult to detect symptoms of hypoxia.

Increase passenger comfort

Do you or your passengers always arrive tired or with a headache? It’s probably because of mild hypoxia. Spending three hours at 10,000 feet is often enough to cause discomfort. And on average, women need oxygen 2,000 feet lower than men. An oxygen system can help you and your passengers arrive comfortably.

Increase your airplane’s utility

When 12,500 is no longer a barrier, you can truly make the most of your high performance airplane. You’ll be able to out-climb turbulence or weather, make use of favorable tailwinds, and even enjoy the lighter traffic between 10,000 and 20,000 feet.

Why choose SkyOx Portable Oxygen Systems?

Value

SkyOx offers complete, advanced systems, with all the features you need for safe, comfortable high altitude flight. And best of all, these systems are available from Sporty’s at excellent prices.

Oxymizer® cannula, with low profile pendant

The breakthrough Oxymizer conserving cannula is the comfortable and efficient way to use oxygen up to 18,000 feet. It nearly triples the duration from each bottle, storing oxygen in the pendant reservoir, so you only get oxygen when you need it. This is not the “mustache type” cannula found on other systems. Eating, drinking and talking with passengers is easy.

Easy to Use

While SkyOx systems feature advanced features and quality construction, there are no confusing electronic controls, no batteries to replace, and no multi-port valves. Just plug in, set your altitude and sit back.

Large variety of sizes and construction

No matter what your needs are for an oxygen system (be it backup or everyday use), we have a size and configuration to match, in aluminum cylinders.

Made in the USA for over 30 years

All of our oxygen systems are proudly made in the USA, guaranteeing exceptional quality and lasting value.

Padded Carrying Bag included free!

Each SkyOx system includes a custom carrying bag. A $50 value—free!

Each system includes an aluminum oxygen cylinder, regulator (four-place), four cannulas and one mask, flow indicators, hoses (10 feet long), fittings and padded carrying case with viewing window to monitor gauges with case closed.

The masks provide continuous-flow oxygen without special flow dividers at altitudes up to 30,000 ft. The cannulas are similar to the masks but use Oxymizer® nasal cannulas to provide more than triple the duration from the same size bottle. Cannulas may only be used at altitudes up to 18,000 ft.

Easy to use if set up before departure.
I bought the 4 place 22 cubic foot system. If anticipating O2 use, get everything ready, including the regulator flow rate. When needed, put on a cannula and open the supply valve. Just be sure to leave the bag unzipped for access unless you have a rear seat passenger. The regulator automatically supplies oxygen only to ports with a cannula or mask attached and there’s no need to fiddle with the flow rate if another user connects or disconnects. A red/green in-line indicator lets you know if gas is being supplied but gives no clue about the rate. A pulse oximeter is a better measure of oxygen delivery. If it’s low, just add a click or two on the regulator. As others say, the bag could be improved in many ways; there is nowhere to stash cannulas, for example.

Pros: Appears quite sturdy, good quality case and components. Worked quite well on it's maiden voyage yesterday. No difficulty setting it up, and operation is simple. Cons: Difficult to operate while it's strapped to the back of the seat in which you're sitting--much easier when it's just on the seat next to you. Love it! Meets my needs perfectly.

Pros: Easy to set up and use. Simple instructions and operation. Green flow indicator is very handy to confirm flow while in operation. Cons: A bit heavy with the steel tank. Cover barely fits over regulator - a bit hard to zip.

Pros: In general, it was huge having oxygen for this last trip. I have a C182RG. We were able to get right up to 15000 ft, later to 17000; missed all the weather for a 5 hour trip and were only burning 10gal/hour up there. Felt very alert and enjoyed the trip. Don't have a lot of experience with O2 systems, but this one was easy to use. Case was great for carrying. Worked great. I'll be using this thing even at lower altitudes from now on. Cons: Ran out of O2 waaay before we were expecting. From the chart, we were expecting 7 hours for two people and barely got 41/2. Right out of the package, the cannulas smelled strongly of glue. I would air them out a few days before first use.

Used the system within two weeks of getting it. Worked great at 13,000 ft. Can't comment yet on the durability / reliability. Will need to use it for a bit longer. My wife sometimes has difficulty with 6,000 - 7,000 ft altitudes and she was fine at 13,000 wearing the cannula. We put 6 man hours on it and used less than half of the bottle (15 cu. ft.), so the duration disclosed is pretty accurate.

I have two of your oxygen systems, where do I send or take these bottles to have them recertified?
Mick V on Jul 18, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I'm going to assume you need a new hydro test done? As a diver, i send mine to the local dive shop. Some places will reject them because of the medical oxygen use. Some fire extinguisher places do hydro testing for medical OX.
Is this a "demand" based system? Meaning does it have an pressure-on-inhale sort of valve?
David R on Aug 23, 2017
BEST ANSWER: David, I purchased this system as a gift to a customer of mine who bought a plane from me, so I haven't used it myself, but my understanding is "No"...it's a constant flow system rather than and "On Demand" system which responds to your inhalation with a "puff" of 02. This system is flowing at a given rate all the time. I do suggest you double check this with the Sporty's tech team too to ensure the accuracy of my answer.
Is there a shut off valve for when a cannula/mask isn't connected to all four places?
Andrew on May 7, 2017
BEST ANSWER: There is a main shutoff valve for the whole unit. However, understand that oxygen can only flow out the connections where an apparatus is attached. In other words, if you only have one cannula attached, oxygen will not flow out of the other three connections.
