The CX-3 Flight Computer makes flight planning simple by taking confusion out of the equation. Fast, versatile and easy to use, the CX-3 delivers accurate results quickly and efficiently. It can be used on all FAA and Canadian pilot, mechanic, and dispatcher knowledge exams. Whether used for flight planning, ground school, or knowledge testing, the menu organization reflects the order in which a flight is normally planned and executed, resulting in a natural flow from one function to the next with a minimum of keystrokes

Multiple aviation functions can be performed on the CX-3 flight computer including those related to time, speed, distance, heading, wind, fuel, altitude, cloud base, standard atmosphere, glide, climb & descent, weight & balance, as well as a holding pattern function to help determine entry method and holding details. A calculator, clock, timer and stopwatch are also built in along with multiple settings for lighting, backlighting, themes, scrolling speed, time zones and more.

The sleek design, and ergonomic fit and finish of the CX-3 make for easy transport. The protective cover comes off the front and snaps onto the back of the computer. A no-slip-strip prevents the CX-3 from sliding around on smooth desk surfaces. A Theme feature provides a convenient way to switch from Standard view to Night or Daylight views. The backlighting feature controls the brightness or intensity of the screen, and the buttons on the keypad will light up in Dusk and Night modes for use in darker environments. A Favorite feature provides quick access to your most frequently used function and store the Aircraft Profile will let you store numbers specific to your aircraft.

Features:
May be used for FAA and Canadian Exams
The CX-3 complies with FAA Order 8080.6 and Advisory Circular (AC) 60-11, "Test Aids and Materials that May be Used by Airman Knowledge Testing Applicants"; therefore, you may bring the CX-3 with you to the testing centers for all pilot, mechanic, dispatcher, and FAA exams.

Numerous Aviation Functions
Calculate everything from true airspeed and Mach number, fuel burn, holding patterns, to headwind/crosswind components, center of gravity (CG), and everything in between. The menu structure provides easy entry, review, and editing within each function. Multiple problems can be solved within one function.

User Friendly
The color LCD screen displays a menu of functions, and the inputs and outputs of a selected function, for easy-to-read menus and data displays. The inputs and outputs of each function are separated on the display screen so it is clear which numbers were entered and which were calculated, along with their corresponding units of measurement. The menu organization reflects how a flight is normally planned and executed. The result is a natural flow from one function to the next with a minimum of keystrokes: to plan a flight, simply work from the menus in sequential order as you fill in your flight plan form.

Non-volatile memory
All settings including aircraft profile, weight and balance data, trip plan data, values entered by the user, and calculations performed by the device will be retained until the batteries are removed or the user performs a memory reset. Follow the CX-3 User Guide for info on backing up and restoring memory.

Ergonomic Design
The CX-3 features a simple keyboard and slim design. The non-slip cover will protect your computer inside the flight bag and it fits on the backside of the unit for easy storage while in use.

Unit Conversions
The CX-3 has 12 unit-conversions: Distance, Speed, Duration, Temperature, Pressure, Volume, Rate, Weight, Rate of Climb/Descent, Angle of Climb/Descent, Torque, and Angle. These 12 conversion categories contain 38 different conversion factors for over 100 functions.

Timers and Clocks
The CX-3 has two timers: a stopwatch that counts up, and a countdown timer. The stopwatch can be used to keep track of elapsed time or to determine the time required to fly a known distance. The countdown timer can be used as a reminder to switch fuel tanks, or to determine the missed approach point on a non-precision instrument approach. An internal clock continues running even when the flight computer is turned off. UTC, destination and local time can be displayed, and the time can be set with UTC, destination or local time.

Interactive Functions
The CX-3 is designed so the functions can be used together. You can perform “chain” calculations where the answer to a preceding problem is automatically entered in subsequent problems. Standard mathematical calculations and conversions can be performed within each aviation function.

You need time to learn the system.
If you have the time to learn it, it,s going to take a while. They say use it on the test , where. I haven’t seen really any use for it on the test

Exceeds Expectations
It's always a good thing when something works even better than you expect. Everything is well thought out; the size (no miniature buttons), the backlighting and color options, the menus, the logical flow of operations, the protective cover with a rubber strip for no-skid positioning.
The data is much brighter and easier to read than it appears on
the product review page. The manual can be downloaded from the ASA website, but the CX-3 is so intuitive that the manual is
hardly needed.
Data is lost when batteries are changed, BUT you can avoid the loss by simply downloading the data to a computer with a USB cable, and then reloading it to the CX-3 after the battery change.
AND, very importantly, when the CX-3 software is updated, you
can just download the new version with a USB cable (not supplied) instead of buying a new CX-3.
One personal recommendation: Although the CX-3 comes with a protective cover, I searched for a more rugged storage case, since the CX-3 will likely be shuffled about in all sorts of travel and storage conditions between those times when it is actually in use.
I found the perfect case (very low cost for the quality) on Amazon. On the Amazon website, search for GLCON External Hard Drive Case. Choose the one that has the words "GLCON Shockproof EVA Carrying Case for WD My Passport Element". Then, when reading the product description, look for an exterior size of 7.2 x 3.9 x 1.9 and, most importantly, an INTERIOR size of 6.9 x 3.7 x 1.4. The CX-3 fits like a glove under the elastic strap in the case. Hardly a millimeter to spare. Very secure.

Burns through AAA batteries
Have had this a short time. Burns through 4 AAA batteries too fast. With little use the second set of batteries is half depleted. The data entry is awkward. Will look for alternatives and keep the mechanical E6-b close by.

how does the sportys e6b compare to the asa new cx3?
Shawn E on Jul 19, 2018
ASA CX-3 Flight Computer
ASA CX-3 Flight Computer
Sporty's Electronic E6B Flight Computer
Sporty's Electronic E6B Flight Computer
BEST ANSWER: In addition to what Eric C. provided, another really, REALLY cool feature is the ability to chose what type of unit you are inputting into that line for the calculation.

Say for example, you are provided two questions to calculate density altitude. One question provides the OAT in degrees Centigrade, the other in Fahrenheit. A simple button press of the "Set Unit" button will switch the type of unit for the input, and then do any required conversions in the background.

Another example is time. Say you were provided a question that says you fly for 26 minutes. Rather than going to calculator and doing 26 ÷ 60 to get the decimal time, just hit SET UNIT until minutes are shown on the far right, enter 26 and the orange square key to complete the input. The CX3 will do any required conversions in the background and compute the answer you're driving for.

Similar functional with the CONV UNIT key. If you put in that you are dealing with 40 gallons of fuel, but needed to know what it is in liters while remaining on the Fuel calculation page, just press CONV UNIT and it will compute the conversion on the fly without you leaving that page.
Can I use this on the FAA written exam for private pilot?
Maverick on Oct 7, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes, it can be used during the written exam.
Which electronic E6B is the best and has the most functions? This E6B or the Sportys E6B? Thanks
Joshua on Jul 8, 2018
BEST ANSWER: In my opinion the display on the Sporty's unit is too small and the backlighting is terrible. I would spent the extra money for the ASA model.
Does it calculate landing distance?
A shopper on Dec 29, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No it doesn't "automatically" calculate landing distances due to too many variables for a standard answer. You're still stuck with the take off and distance diagrams that start with temperature, then altitude, then weights, then winds.

However, it is simple to use for the "in flight" calculations needing a combination of calculated altitudes, calculated airspeeds, wind correction, and more. Once you know the steps required from the starting information provided on the exam, getting to the correct answer is very easy.
Does it help with takeoff distance questions?
A shopper on Nov 15, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No it doesn't "automatically" calculate takeoff or landing distances due to too many variables for a standard answer. You're still stuck with the take off and distance diagrams that start with temperature, then altitude, then weights, then winds.

I don't think any portable E6B Flight Computer does these calculations. There are apps out there for phones and tablets that can do them. But they are often pre-designed for the specific aircraft and can't be used for a different one. For example, if you have the app for the Phenom, you cannot use it to calculate t/o landing distances for your C172 or CRJ.

However, it is simple to use the ASA CX-3 for the "in flight" calculations needing a combination of calculated altitudes, calculated airspeeds, wind correction, and more. Once you know the steps required from the starting information provided on the exam, getting to the correct answer is very easy.
Can I purchase this as an app on iPhone?
A shopper on Nov 7, 2017
BEST ANSWER: A standalone app for iOS device, and a reply to my recent inquiry basically said they are not going to pursue one.

However you can find a web browser app that simulates the look and usage feel of the CX-3. Visit the CX-3 product page for ASA, look to the lower right for the "Try before you buy" link. I just tried this on my older iPhone 6 and it worked just fine. Keep in mind you will need a net connection to use this.
When I am using the the flight planning function on the CX-3, changing the Magnetic Variation has no affect on the calculated results. Using the example in the manual changing the “Var” from -17 to +17 the calculate results for the trip remain the same. If I change the Wdir by subtracting 17 adding 17 and leave the “Var” at 0, I get different results greater than and less than relative to the published results. Shouldn’t the magnetic variation affect the calculated ground speed, fuel and en route time?

Please tell me if I am doing something wrong.
Nick G on Mar 1, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I can but the variation affects True Heading.
Do you deliver to India? If so, how long would it take to reach India and what's the shipping cost for the same?
Pallove K on Oct 26, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes, we deliver to India, Through I-parcel service 4-8 business days. International Airmail is 10 to 30 business days. Shipping cost is based on weight and method. You will be presented with a total cost from iParcel and we will email a quote if shipping International Airmail.
How long do the batteries last, particularly when compared to the Sportys Electronic Flight Computer? Which of the two devices would be more suitable for turbine and large aircraft operations?
A shopper on Jan 21, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I have had a fresh set of 4 AAA batteries take me through 2 weeks of 5 to 7 hours of study and 2 exams and still have plenty of juice to spare.

Like smart phones, it's possible to extend battery life by setting the brightness level and the sleep timer to something that minimizes battery drain and doesn't drive you batty because it goes to sleep to fast.

Unfortunately, I have never owned a Sporty's flight computer so nothing to compare to there.

As far as turbine aircraft.... if you need to use a E6B for those types of ops, then the CX-3 will do the job. But if you need something specific for your specific turbine or large aircraft, then that's more likely a specific app or spreadsheet.
Can I use it on EASA Atpl exam in Hungary ?
adream11 on Jan 18, 2018
BEST ANSWER: You would need to check with the examiner in Hungary. It is allowed in the FAA exam.
what is the difference between cx3 and e6b?
A shopper on Jan 17, 2018
BEST ANSWER: They are the same. The cx3 is ASA's E6B.
