Which cable do I need?

Most headsets come in multiple cable configurations. Choosing the right one is pretty easy, it just depends on what type of aircraft you fly:

  • Battery powered, twin plugs - this is by far the most common style, with separate microphone and headphone plugs (so-called PJ plugs). Almost every airplane ever built has these two plugs in the panel, so these headsets are universal. The only downside is that, for ANR headsets, you will need to use AA batteries to power the headset.
  • Aircraft powered, 6-pin plug - the second most popular style, sometimes called the "LEMO plug," requires no batteries since it is powered by the panel. This is convenient, but it does require the 6-pin plug to be installed in the panel. While many newer airplanes come with this option, most older airplanes do not. For these applications, you'll need to have your avionics shop wire in the plug - not a big job, but not something pilots can do on their own.
  • Airbus XLR plug - less common is a single 5-pin connector that is made for Airbus jets.

When in doubt, we recommend buying the battery powered, twin plug model. This is the most universal option, and will work in almost any airplane. If you have a 6-pin plug in your airplane or you plan to install one, the aircraft powered model is a nice option.

Sporty's tips

  1. Selecting the proper ear tip size is critical. If you have the wrong size, the headset’s performance will be compromised. This is especially true of the tap control feature, which simply will not work properly. ProFlight comes with three tip sizes, S, M, L. The medium is the default size and fits most pilots best. The small and large can be found in the pouch inside the carry case. Some pilots may find that they need one size in one ear and another size for the other ear.
  2. To change the ear tip, pilots should not pull on the “wing” of the silicone ear tip. Instead, hold the wing with your index finger and thumb while supporting the base of the ear tip with your other fingers. Gently pull back and away from the ear bud to remove the tip. This will reduce the likelihood that they will tear the ear tip.
  3. Three Levels of Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) –  In fact, the three settings offer different noise cancelling profiles based on environmental factors. This means that in some aircraft pilots might find medium to be a better setting than high. We also need to stress that the low position is really just “hear-through” which optimizes voice frequencies outside the intercom. Unfortunately, wind noise is in a similar frequency range as voice, so the user will experience an increase in overall noise, even though voices will be optimized. It is important to stress that low mode is intended for use on the ground, while at the gate for example, to communicate with people coming in and out of the flight deck while staying in contact with flight ops. It is NOT intended for use while in flight. The intent is to use it when you need, then to go back to medium or high mode.

I’ve used the lightspeed mach1 for years and I’ve always loved how lightweight and comfortable it was but was not noise canceling and the durability was poor. This headset has all the things I loved in the mach1 and fixed all the things that I didn’t making this the headset I will probably have for the rest of my Aviation career.

Great comfortable headset.
I have been using it on the B-737 for 6 flights. So far it has been great! It’s light and comfortable and the ANR is awesome. I read many reviews prior to ordering and was concerned about some of the complaints. I would agree with some of the gripes: cord is heavy and can pull the headset around on your head, tap control doesn’t work well, but I’ve found these are very minor annoyances that can easily be overcome and are far outweighed by the comfort of this headset. It really only took one or two legs to figure out how to attach the wire so it doesn’t pull on the headset and the tap feature doesn’t have to be on. It is so convenient to remove one earbud to hear a jumpseater or whatever. I select high on the ANR and it is super quiet. I’m sticking with this headset and highly recommend it.

Not ready for prime time
I bought the ProFlight at OSH. Have been using it in a B737 since (about 300 hrs of use). Yes, it's light and comfortable. I haven't had the problem others describe with it moving around on my head, but I clip the cord to my epaulet. Here are the problems 1) I haven't found the earbud size that keeps it in my ear. Constantly have to keep pushing it back in. ANR is not great. I have a QC20, and those earbuds fit perfectly and the ANR is much better. 2) Must be VERY careful changing the tips. They are held on the plastic earpiece by little barbs, and it's very easy to break off those barbs, and then you're screwed. 3) The microphone is supposed to be set with the white dot towards your mouth, but mine was mounted with the white dot AWAY from the mouth. Have to twist the boom 180 degrees to position it correctly. It doesn't want to stay there, so I'm constantly twisting the boom to keep the microphone positioned correctly. 4) Wind muff on the mic refused to stay on. I finally secured it with an o-ring. 5) By far the most irritating problem is, during takeoff and landing, the ANR turns on and off randomly, especially if there is a thump like the nose wheel hitting a centerline light. Obviously distracting during critical phase of flight.

Lesson learned: Never buy the A-model of anything, I guess. A nice idea, but they need to work out a lot of bugs. I guess I'll be returning it.

Great in a Cirrus
Love the headset and functionality. Using in a Cirrus SR22T and noise reduction works great. Really like they sent 3 sets of ear sizes.

Can’t believe they released them for sale
I was so excited to try my new headset. I had just switched rotations so I was going to be flying for 15 straight days. After the third day my ears heart so bad Iswitched back to our standard issued telex 750 non noise reduction. I waited several days and tried them again with a different set of ear buds. Much better but they would work loose in about 30 minuets. One of the other many problems is the cord is much to heavy for the weight of the headset. So between the ear buds and the weight of the cord pulling them off my head I was constantly fiddling and adjusting them. It was abustley the worst. I took them off and back into the box. That was the last time I touched them until I returned them.

Bose Pro Flight Review—Thumbs Down
I was really exited for these new headaets. Tried them on a B762 and was immediately dissappointed. They are very light making them feel unstable on the head, the extremely large cable pulled the unit around the head. It clamps so hard on the head, that you actually feel it is there, and after an hour it gets uncomfortable. The earbuds were an issue after an hour and a half of flight time (Tried both S and M), it hurts your ear and is uncomfortable. I recieved a defective unit, since the tight ear bud did not work to listen to ATC (Tried it on 3 different airplanes) I assumed it was an issue with the plug. Double tap feature was good, but it also amolified the ambient sounds (airplane, ground crew on airplane, etc) making it hard to understand the other pilot.Only great thing is that the ANR was surprisingly good.Overall I gave it a thumbs down...Returned the unit and sticking with the A20’s

Worst headset I ever owned.
I tried to like them. I tried them for a week of flying. After the second day I switched back to the telex 750 non noise canceling. Problems : 1 headset to light and flimsy . Cord way to heavy, they pull them off your head. The cord also runs wright next to the mic and I was constantly pulling it away from my mouth. The earbuds continued to loosen up and I fiddled with them nonstop. Really disappointed and returned them.

My ears hurt after one or two hours wearing it even though they included different size ear buds. I tried them all. Didn’t like how it fit. Sent it back. Great noice canceling but uncomfortable. For 1000 bucks I have to love it. Back to my Zulu 2’s.

Sound quality and mic performance are excellent. I have a pair of the noise canceling earbuds and find them more comfortable than the earpieces on the Clarity Aloft that I am replacing. (Needed to send the CA in for the 4th time) Am disappointed with the headband on the Bose. Haven’t found a comfortable, sturdy location on my head. Headset seems to travel around on my head. If you could mount the earbuds and mic on the Clarity Aloft setup, then you’d have a good combination. Also, Bose has a high opinion of themselves and it is a bit pricey for what you get. Not sure if I’m going to keep it.

Will the 6 pin connector work on the Embraer 175/190?

Since the ProFlight does not appear have intercom communications volume control buttons (only Bluetooth volume buttons) on the control unit, can the communications volume be adjusted via the Bose App? If not, that would leave only the aircraft’s audio panel volume control affecting both pilots volume input and no individual adjustment for fine tuning to personal liking.

BEST ANSWER: In the professional cockpits for which this headset is intended, each pilot likely has an independent audio panel. Frankly, I always found the level controls on the A20 and similar headsets to be nothing more than a "gotcha" switch. Sure as the day is long, I'd accidentally turn those suckers down pulling them out of the bag or what not. I'm glad to see them gone on the ProFlight.

BEST ANSWER: I believe the XLR5 version of the ProFlight can run off aircraft power (if present) or batteries. An adapter is not needed, assuming the aircraft requires an XLR5.
