The smallest, quietest ANR headset for professional pilots

Now professional pilots can wear a Bose headset designed specifically for airline and corporate flight decks, including all the noise reduction, comfort, and advanced audio features that have made Bose the top-selling headset brand in aviation. The completely new ProFlight Aviation Headset weighs just 4.9 ounces and uses comfortable silicone eartips to virtually eliminate side pressure, so it can be worn for hours without discomfort - perfect for long days in the cockpit of a Boeing or a Gulfstream. It still features digital active noise reduction, Bluetooth connectivity, and famous Bose audio quality, making it a no-compromise headset for professional pilots.

Pilot-friendly features:

  • Innovative, lightweight design weighs just 4.9 oz. - no large ear cups or ear seals
  • Contoured headband with replaceable pad - low profile with minimal clamping force
  • Rotating side pads for comfort and stability - flip up for storage or horizontal for use
  • Digital active noise cancellation - significantly reduces ambient noise (designed for jet aircraft, not piston)
  • Comfortable silicone eartips block noise - change sizes or replace without tools
  • Active equalization - automatically shapes and equalizes incoming signal for enchanced clarity
  • Adjustable boom mic - remains stable with head movement
  • Electret noise canceling mic - increases clarity and reduces background noise, even with “hot mic” airplanes

Perfect for airline and corporate pilots:

  • Tap control for talk-through communication - talk to a co-pilot or cabin crew without removing the headset
  • Quick-release mic and down cable - move the boom mic to either side without tools (ideal for co-pilots)
  • FAA TSO and E/TSO-C139a certified - approved for use on airline flight decks
  • Easily replaceable components - change headband pad, side pads, and eartips for hygiene

Ergonomic control module:

  • Three user selectable levels of noise cancellation - allows for user preference and changing aircraft
  • Bluetooth phone and audio connection - connect to mobile devices for music or lectronic flight bag notifications
  • Audio prioritization - mix Bluetooth audio with intercom audio, or auto-mute Bluetooth audio when intercom is active

Bose Connect app

New from Bose, this free app offers an enhanced way to enable Bluetooth audio sharing, manage connections, pair and unpair devices, or rename devices. It’s also updateable and scalable with continuously developed features - everything you need to get the most out of your ProFlight headset for years to come.

STAFF PIREP

"The unique design of the ProFlight is perfect for turbine airplanes. I love how lightweight the headset is, and how there’s virtually zero clamping force on my head. But the ANR and Bluetooth features are still there, and make those long cross-country flights a lot more enjoyable.”

Which cable do I need?

Most headsets come in multiple cable configurations. Choosing the right one is pretty easy, it just depends on what type of aircraft you fly:

  • Battery powered, twin plugs - this is by far the most common style, with separate microphone and headphone plugs (so-called PJ plugs). Almost every airplane ever built has these two plugs in the panel, so these headsets are universal. The only downside is that, for ANR headsets, you will need to use AA batteries to power the headset.
  • Aircraft powered, 6-pin plug - the second most popular style, sometimes called the "LEMO plug," requires no batteries since it is powered by the panel. This is convenient, but it does require the 6-pin plug to be installed in the panel. While many newer airplanes come with this option, most older airplanes do not. For these applications, you'll need to have your avionics shop wire in the plug - not a big job, but not something pilots can do on their own.
  • Airbus XLR plug - less common is a single 5-pin connector that is made for Airbus jets.

When in doubt, we recommend buying the battery powered, twin plug model. This is the most universal option, and will work in almost any airplane. If you have a 6-pin plug in your airplane or you plan to install one, the aircraft powered model is a nice option.

Sporty's tips

  1. Selecting the proper ear tip size is critical. If you have the wrong size, the headset’s performance will be compromised. This is especially true of the tap control feature, which simply will not work properly. ProFlight comes with three tip sizes, S, M, L. The medium is the default size and fits most pilots best. The small and large can be found in the pouch inside the carry case. Some pilots may find that they need one size in one ear and another size for the other ear.
  2. To change the ear tip, pilots should not pull on the “wing” of the silicone ear tip. Instead, hold the wing with your index finger and thumb while supporting the base of the ear tip with your other fingers. Gently pull back and away from the ear bud to remove the tip. This will reduce the likelihood that they will tear the ear tip.
  3. Three Levels of Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) –  In fact, the three settings offer different noise cancelling profiles based on environmental factors. This means that in some aircraft pilots might find medium to be a better setting than high. We also need to stress that the low position is really just “hear-through” which optimizes voice frequencies outside the intercom. Unfortunately, wind noise is in a similar frequency range as voice, so the user will experience an increase in overall noise, even though voices will be optimized. It is important to stress that low mode is intended for use on the ground, while at the gate for example, to communicate with people coming in and out of the flight deck while staying in contact with flight ops. It is NOT intended for use while in flight. The intent is to use it when you need, then to go back to medium or high mode.

Sorry, I really wanted to like them. But I am returning them. They still have a lot of work to do from a comfort perspective. I will try again in a few years.

I like them
Admittedly, I read the previous reviews and I approached the purchase of the Bose ProFlight headset with apprehension. I was concerned about the ear pieces fitting properly, about it falling off my head and about a lack of noise cancellation. But I really did want to try them out because after a day in my A20's my head feels as if it has been in a vise. My first issue was getting them in my ears. It took some wrestling the first time to get the ear pieces into the proper position but, once in, they were great and the sound quality and cancellation in the cockpit of my Cessna 525 is comparable to my A20's. Knowing what to expect, I've gotten better at getting them inserted properly and quickly and I hope to get better as i get more familiar with them. The ProFlight is light, it almost just sits on top of your head and the gravity produced tension on the cord does make it feel like the set will fall off just by turning my head, but fastening the attached cord clamp to my shoulder strap resolved that problem. Thus far, my flights haven't been long, 1-1.5 hours, so I can't speak to their comfort after a long day but, so far, I have to admit that I forget that they are on. I'm glad I've got them and I think I'll hang on to them.

Very pleased
Fly an SR22 G6 and love these, the noise canceling makes for a very quiet cabin. Light weight, clip the cable to my harness and they don’t move. Highly recommend.

Great Headset! Super Lightweight!
I bought these with some hesitancy based off of all the research I did on various outlets. The 30 day money back guarantee coupled with the PayPal 6 months interest free is the only reason I decided to give these a try. First it’s worth noting I’m on the 737. I have been nothing but pleased with the headset. They are super lightweight, ANC is really good, and I haven’t had any issues with them sliding around on my head. I use the clips provided and use one on the rail and one on my eppellet. I did try the tap function and thought that it sucked and needs attention in future models. It was very finicky and would randomly turn off/on. If I need to talk to a flight attendant or have a Capt that still uses the old ear dck then I take the left one out and hang it on the provided hook which works out great. The blue tooth function that muted the volume when the mic is keyed works great as well. Packing it up when the flight is over takes a little getting used too but I didn’t think it was a show stopper. They’re not built like the over the ear headsets for durability what they’re also a fraction of the weight so take your pick on what you want. I take care of my stuff and don’t throw them around so works well for me.

I want my A20 back
I am terribly dissatisfied with the new ProFlight headset. I have been flying with the Bose A20 for more than 5 years now in various cockpits, from single engine pistons to medium jets. I thought the ProFlight headset must be the future generation of headsets when it comes to jet cockpits, hence the decision to buy it and say goodbye to my trusty A20. After two flights and about 12 hours, I packed it back in its box and requested a refund. After only about 2 or 3 hours the earpieces created pressure points now matter how I tried to adjust it (and yes I tried all of the provided sizes). The other intrinsic problem that I didn't foresee is the penalty that you pay for the headset being as light as it is- the cable connecting to it is still heavy and quite rigid (I tried every single clipping point that I could think of to anker it somehow) so with every head movement it just shifts ever so slightly on your head so it means you have to take your hands of whatever you are doing to adjust the headset or the mic, not tho mention a messed up hairdo. On a more personal note, the in-ear concept just isn't for me. I don`t mind listening to music or the transmissions but it just sounds terrible when you hear yourself speaking into the mic. I love Bose products in general so I am really disappointed and sad that I spent so much money on something that really under performed in my opinion.

ProFlight, Just Do It.
So far so good. I can’t get the double tap option to work, but maybe it is something I’m not doing right. Much smaller footprint than the A20s, and works really well in the Embraer.

Sent back after 50 hours in jets.
Returned after 30 days and 50 hours in two types of jets. As others have said the cord is way too big and heavy so it pulls of your head, the mic is no good, the ear buds hurt after while (this is ear dependent however) the ANR is weird. Low is actually amplified ambient, medium was ok and max was just a little louder? Bose missed the mark.

Skeptic became a convert
Pleasantly surprised... I was a bit skeptical of the design, especially flying with people who were already using it, but I decided to take the plunge anyways... And wow! Very impressed.

Its biggest advantage is also one of its disadvantages. The headest itself is so extraordinarily light, you'll completely forget you're wearing it... I know people say that about a lot of headsets, but I really mean it with this thing. It's so very comfortable... That being said, the cord/mic attachment is heavier than the headset, so unless you have it clipped perfectly to distribute the weight, the cord will sometimes pull the headset around a bit on your head. Let me tell you, that is a minor inconvenience, but it exists.

I've worn the headset on 14 hour legs and 3 hour legs, and have been very pleased with both! The Bluetooth mix/mute functionality works flawlessly... You can even make phone calls directly from the headset via Bluetooth to get the hotel van headed your way when you block in.

After a bit of getting used to how the headset behaves, you'll fall in love with it immediately. Worth every penny!

Cracking noises with noise cancellation on !
Well,....I've had numerous devices from Bose through the years and I have generally been pleased with their products.
I have been using the Bose proflight for work on the B-757 and B-767 for the last couple of months and I must admitt that I am a bit dissapointed . The headset fits well and is easy to wear on legs up to 9 hours . However there is a big problem with the noise cancellation.........It normally starts out fine, but during cruize it starts making some "cracking" noises and shuts down. I then have to reset it ....plug-in and plug-out to get it to work again but the problem normally repeats itself ! I have tried the different size earplugs as the manual suggests but no luck. I also find the storage-case wich the unit comes in to very bulky for this type of a headset. I reverted to using it with the "noise cancellation" turned off and thats a clear dealbreaker for a headset with this price-tag.

I’ve used the lightspeed mach1 for years and I’ve always loved how lightweight and comfortable it was but was not noise canceling and the durability was poor. This headset has all the things I loved in the mach1 and fixed all the things that I didn’t making this the headset I will probably have for the rest of my Aviation career.

Will the 6 pin connector work on the Embraer 175/190?
A shopper on Jun 11, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I do not know which connection is available in that aircraft.
Since the ProFlight does not appear have intercom communications volume control buttons (only Bluetooth volume buttons) on the control unit, can the communications volume be adjusted via the Bose App? If not, that would leave only the aircraft’s audio panel volume control affecting both pilots volume input and no individual adjustment for fine tuning to personal liking.
A shopper on Jun 27, 2018
BEST ANSWER: In the professional cockpits for which this headset is intended, each pilot likely has an independent audio panel. Frankly, I always found the level controls on the A20 and similar headsets to be nothing more than a "gotcha" switch. Sure as the day is long, I'd accidentally turn those suckers down pulling them out of the bag or what not. I'm glad to see them gone on the ProFlight.
What will be the shipping cost to Peru?
Sergio N on Aug 1, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Approximately $254.00 via I-Parcel. This includes all duties and taxes.
Can you advise what connector is suitable for the ATR 72 , as it uses the XLR5 Airbus connector ? However the aircraft will not power the headset through the panel . So I would ideally need to buy the GA twin Battery Pin with and Airbus XLR5 connector ?
Tejesh n on Jun 20, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I believe the XLR5 version of the ProFlight can run off aircraft power (if present) or batteries. An adapter is not needed, assuming the aircraft requires an XLR5.

Will it work in a Cirrus SR22T & Cirrus SF50 Jet?
Shwetty on Aug 29, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Better in the SF50 Jet. In piston aircraft, the noise reduction is not as good as with the A20 Bose headset.
