It's additional XM weather features beyond ADS-B are nice, but having to run Garmin Pilot on my iPhone just to operate the XM radio is a bit of a pain although I am used to it now. I may get a remote XM antenna since the audio can be intermittent heading north with a Twin Comanche roofline intruding. I also use it in different cars for the XM radio, an important feature for me. I did have the Bluetooth quit on me (may have dropped it...) but Garmin was VERY quick with a warranty replacement unit. It does run over 5 hours but I like to keep its charge up using USB from the cigarette lighter. However, my 12v/USB output is limited so it barely keeps the GDL 52 battery even. For XM audio, I use the 3.5 mm jack in the plane and Bluetooth in the cars; works great. It's one of my favorite gadgets.November 14, 2019Would You Recommend?NoHave not flown behind it yet. 10 months agoDurability4 / 5Reliability4 / 5Performance3 / 5Ease Of Use3 / 5Value3 / 5Would You Recommend?YesNo a complaint as much as information.I originally purchased a Garmin GXM 42 antenna for my Garmin aera 796 so I could access SiruisXM weather and radio. The GXM 42 worked very well. I could connect my 796 via 3.5mm audio cable to my panel and hear both the aural alerts (terrain, traffic, altitude……) and siriusXM music through my headsets on a single audio input. I didn't however like the large cable required to connect the GXM 42 to my yoke mounted 796. I subsequently returned the GXM 42 antenna and purchased the Garmin GDL 52 FOR ADS-B and SiruisXM needs which will connect to my 796 through a Bluetooth connection. NO CABLES REQUIRED. It works great! the only drawback is that you can not access both the aural alerts of the 796 and the siruisXM radio through one source. You have to connect a 3.5mm audio cable to the 796 for aural alerts and another 3.5mm audio cable to the GDL 52 to hear the siruisXM music through your panel. You can however purchase a 2 into 1 3.5mm audio cable splitter and hear both through one panel input, but still more cables running around the cockpit.September 9, 2019Durability5 / 5Reliability2 / 5Performance3 / 5Ease Of Use3 / 5Value3 / 5Would You Recommend?NoI bought one of these about three months ago because it has sxm. But I have been very disappointed with the sxm service every time you actually need it it seems like it doesn’t work. I wish I would have spent half the money and bought the one with out it that has a longer battery life. That being said the rest of the unit works very well and if you are flying at higher altitudes the sxm would probably work better. But it isn’t a feature I would pay for. And I haven’t been able to figure out the rebate.September 3, 2019Durability5 / 5Reliability5 / 5Performance3 / 5Ease Of Use5 / 5Value4 / 5Would You Recommend?YesGDL52great product EXCEPT the XM portion does not work on aircraft with heated windshields.August 25, 2019Purchased

After about one month, the antenna fell off - $45 to replace.
After about 6 months use, the micro USB port internal to the unit broke off of the circuit board. You'll be plugging and unplugging this each to]one you use it, and it is a complete design and manufacturing defect. Garmin warranty is 3 months. I haven't been able to get anyone to quote me a cost to repair. My unit is junk right now, as there is no other way to charge it.
In restrospect, I would've bought the gdl 50; the need for Sirius Xm weather and radio is nil. I tried the Sirius WX trial; it is not worth any more than the free ads-b / fis-b WX.May 12, 2019Durability3 / 5Reliability1 / 5Performance1 / 5Ease Of Use4 / 5Value2 / 5Would You Recommend?NoNot happy with it at all, the AHRS blanks out very often.May 12, 2019Purchased

I decided to switch to GARMIN for ADSB and HUD. I like much better. See pic. I usually know where I am so clean ADSB and HUD better then FF in my opinion. FF better for flight planning.
Stay away from Garmin watch...bought this features so buried in watch inaccessible while in flight.
Can use both apps together on ipad.

With other XM receivers we have found we need two external antennas, one in each side window . This of course requires us to switch between them depending on whether we are Eastbound or Westbound. Question: If an external XM antenna is connected to this unit will the internal antenna still be active? If this were so we could place the unit in a side cockpit window and the external XM antenna in the opposite window giving us reception regardless of heading.BEST ANSWER: My understanding is that when the external antenna is connected the internal antenna is disconnected.
