Improved comfort and durability

The Lightspeed Zulu headset has been a pilot favorite for years, offering an unbeatable mix of performance and value. Whether you’re flying a two-seat trainer or a large turboprop, Zulu delivers outstanding ANR performance and industry-leading Bluetooth options - all at a price under $900. The latest generation, Zulu 3, is Lightspeed’s best yet, with enhanced comfort, durability and value.

More comfort
New, contoured ear seals are designed to hug the curve of the jaw, reducing side pressure to get a more natural fit for more comfort and stability. With 20% more surface area than other models, these new ear seals create a better seal so they work better than ever with glasses. They also create 30-50% more space for the ear than other ANR headsets — a key feature of long-term user comfort. Plus, a taller head pad option is included free, which ensures maximum comfort and performance on smaller head shapes.

More durability
Zulu 3 is outfitted with new cables built around a Kevlar core, which are stronger, lighter, and more flexible than standard cables. They’re much less likely to get tangled or damaged in the cockpit – a real advantage. The more durable cables complement the other premium materials used in the rest of the headset construction, including the magnesium cups, sliders, and the stainless steel headband.

More support
Zulu 3 is backed by a 7-year warranty, the best in aviation. Plus, Lightspeed’s famous support team means you’ll always have a friendly, helpful person to assist.

No compromises
Zulu 3 still has the award-winning Lightspeed ANR and all of the most popular features, such as Bluetooth for phone and music, Auto Shutoff™, and ComPriority.™ It also has an exclusive user adjustable mic gain adjustment to get the audio and sidetone just right for all voices.

FlightLink compatible
Capture and retrieve incoming and outgoing communications with Lightspeed’s free app for iPad and iTunes. Great for student pilots, instrument pilots or anyone who wants a digital copilot.

Includes carrying case, cell phone, and music patch cords, cord clips, two AA batteries and foam windscreen for the microphone. Weighs 14.6 oz.

Bret KoebbeStaff PIREP

"The Zulu 3 hits the sweet spot for me - a few hundred dollars less than the top end headsets, but packed with features. I love the Bluetooth audio for long cross countries since I can wirelessly pair my iPhone, and the stainless steel headband will last forever."

Plus: Solid construction, with stainless steel headband

Plus: Bluetooth phone and audio connections

Minus: Missing Zulu PFX's adaptive ANR features

Which cable do I need?

Most headsets come in multiple cable configurations. Choosing the right one is pretty easy, it just depends on what type of aircraft you fly:

  • Battery powered, twin plugs - this is by far the most common style, with separate microphone and headphone plugs (so-called PJ plugs). Almost every airplane ever built has these two plugs in the panel, so these headsets are universal. The only downside is that, for ANR headsets, you will need to use AA batteries to power the headset.
  • Aircraft powered, 6-pin plug - the second most popular style, sometimes called the "LEMO plug," requires no batteries since it is powered by the panel. This is convenient, but it does require the 6-pin plug to be installed in the panel. While many newer airplanes come with this option, most older airplanes do not. For these applications, you'll need to have your avionics shop wire in the plug - not a big job, but not something pilots can do on their own.
  • Helicopter plug - helicopters use a single, shorter plug (that is not compatible with airplanes). This is not like the 6-pin plug above, however, since an ANR helicopter headset will still need AA batteries. The only confusing part is that some helicopters also have a 6-pin (or LEMO) plug. In these helicopters, there are two different single plug connections.

Headset plug versionsWhen in doubt, we recommend buying the battery powered, twin plug model. This is the most universal option, and will work in almost any airplane. If you have a 6-pin plug in your airplane or you plan to install one, the aircraft powered model is a nice option.

Good but Mic is not reversible.
Good headset, but.. The microphone cannot be swapped to the right side, it is left side only. The cord also tangles easily and the control is overly large. Very comfortable, and ANR works great. I would say they are more comfortable than the Bose for me, but not being able to swap the mic to the other side was a deal breaker.

Serious Pilot
I guess one of the things you do when you become a Serious Pilot is spring for a really good headset. All of the reviews and comments I've read about the Zulu 3 lead me to purchase one - I am not disappointed!

Comparable with my BOSE A-20
I bought two BOSE A-20 for my Cirrus SR-20 and used them for my wife and I who fly regularly. I wanted a good quality ANR headset for adult passengers who fly with me and decided to try the Zulu 3. I bought two of them for the backseat passengers. I actually flew two flights using the ZULU 3 and as couldn't tell much difference. Maybe not quite as quiet as the Bose, but seriously, you can't really tell the difference after a few minutes.

The only issue I had was that the comms in my Cirrus are stereo and unless you reset the dip switch from mono to stereo they don't work. Lightspeed customer service and Sporty's both helped me out quickly with that issue and now they work fine. Also, had LEMO plugs and with the comms on a Cirrus, the headset doesn't need a battery, which is nice.

If you are looking for a less expensive option to the Bose A-20 with similar performance. Zulu 3 is an excellent choice.

Worth every penny!
Amazing! I am only a student pilot so I don't have a lot of experience to make comparisons between this and the other top of the line options, but compared to the headset made available by the school, it was worth every penny. I could have gotten something less expensive as a first headset, but I figured why spend money now, then more later? Just go for the one that will be with me for a long time. I am also very pleased with the construction. I prefer the more durable metal construction over the plastic construction of some other high end models. I read reviews stating that the added weight might be an issue, I have not experienced any problems. I will say that I am not flying for hours and hours at a time like someone who works in the industry, but after a typical hour and a half or so training session, I never even noticed I was wearing it. One thing to be aware of though, if you are switching from a headset that doesn't have ANR or even good ANR, it's a little strange no longer hearing the engine noise. I also have to say that Lightspeed's customer service is great. While the headset fit me just fine, it was adjusted almost as small as it goes which surprised me because I don't usually wear small size hats or helmets. I contacted them and they immediately sent be out the taller top pad at no charge.

One of the top 2 ANR headsets available, IMO
Some of my pilot friends have raved about the Lightspeed Zulu headset, so needing a new co-pilot (wife) headset I thought I'd try one out and compare it with my current Bose A20. Bottom line is the Zulu's ANR performance is as good as or better than the Bose (both are excellent) but for me and my wife, the Bose is lighter and more comfortable. Really comes down to personal preference, I think.
Thanks to Sporty's 30 day trial, I got a chance to do a real world side by side comparison of the two, and as a result, I'm returning the Zulu3 and ordering another Bose A20. YMMV.

Extremely comfortable, well built, awesome quality
I give 4 on Ease of use because of the mic boom being fixed to the left side only and the battery hock is a bit heavy.

Personally I don't mind that it is left side only. And I use the included lapel clip to make a small loop back onto the cord itself. I then use that loop to hang from the ashtray nobs that are just below the window in the C172s, keeping it accessible yet out of the way. This works much better than throwing it in the map pocket, where my leg seems to like to toggle on/off the noise canceling. The 7yr warranty and kevlar braided cable, which is extremely durable and twist-free, let me do that without worry.

I have worn the Bose A20s; I bought these because of the 7yr warranty and the kevlar cord; I take care of my stuff, but let's be honest, the cockpits are cramped, cords can get caught in doors, etc. It seemed like this better fit my lifestyle. I have not been disappointed, these are amazing, comfortable, durable.

I have 110 hours in his headset now and love them. Even without ANR turned on, they do a great job of knocking down the noise. Plastic-stemmed sunglasses can cause a bit of a gap in the ear caps, adding a little bit of noise, plus a little bit of head squeeze. wire-stemmed sunglasses eliminate that problem.

I wear a 7 5/8" hat, so probably slightly larger than normal head. With or without a hat, these do not cause any head squeeze or pain. The only squeeze is from thick-stemmed plastic sunglasses or foggles as I mentioned, and it's still isn't bad, it's just a bit of pressure at the stems. I've worn hats with grommet beads and without, it makes no difference on these.

I've replaced the batteries once. I do use the bluetooth feature as well to connect them to my tablet; I don't play music through them.

If you're worried about durability and longevity but want a top of the line headset, this is the set for you. The 30 day guarantee by Sporty's helps make this a no brainer to try out.
