I narrowed my choices to the Zulu 3 and Bose A20. It seemed in those reviews it came down to individual user preference. So I opted to start with the Zulu 3 as it was less expensive and I could return it in 30 days if I didn't like it.
Just putting the headset on made it clear this was much better on passive noise reduction than my first passive headset. On my first flight with it it was a a couple orders of magnitude better than my old ANR headset. But as that headset (another brand) was at least 15 years old (back when Lightspeed was a new name and a Lightspeed 20 could be had for $450, I would have been shocked if the Zulu wasn't that much better. On my second flight with Zulu I was with another pilot who had the A20. After about 40 minutes we swapped head sets. Both of us felt there was no discernible difference in sound quality. He felt he liked the more positive pressure the Bose had on the ear cups. Interestingly, I thought they were too tight. I liked that the larger Lightspeed cups covered my ears completely while the A20's rested partially on my ears, possibly explaining why they felt too tight to me.
So, I have to say I agree with those other reviewers who found that both the Lightspeed Zulu and the Bose A20 are excellent ANR options. It really does come down to personal preference, and maybe how big your ears and head are.
My only real issue with the Zulu 3 is, as others have noted, the inability to flip the mic to keep the cords on the right side when sitting in the right seat - you know, where CFI's and nearly half of professional pilots sit. But for me, being able to keep the cable from crossing my chest is not a $250 benefit, which is the additional cost of the Bose A20.January 3, 2019Purchased

I use it flying a Piper Warrior and the noise cancellation is a must. Compared to non-ANR headsets I have tried this was just the perfect choice for the price point and utility.December 28, 2018Purchased

Sound quality is good, noise cancelation works nice. The unit that controls the noise and Bluetooth (inline with the plug cables) is a bit bulky, not sure how others measure up, I just tuck it into the side pocket of the 172 and it says out of the way.December 19, 2018Purchased
1 month agoDurability5 / 5Reliability5 / 5Performance5 / 5Ease Of Use5 / 5Value5 / 5Would You Recommend?YesLightspeed Zulu 3Have only used it for one flight. They are comfortable, the ANR system works very well and the clarity is excellent. I will have to adjust the mic volume because I'm over modulating a little. But, others tell me I'm clear. The chord is noteworthy and seems to be extremely tough. The Bluetooth feature works fine with my phone. Pilots have a unique relationship with their headsets and of course for their cost, we all want one that will perform and last for a long time .My initial impression is that this is a keeper.November 26, 2018Purchased
2 months agoDurability5 / 5Reliability5 / 5Performance5 / 5Ease Of Use5 / 5Value4 / 5Would You Recommend?YesWe now have 3 Zulu 3sWe traded our Bose A20 for the last one. Compared to the Bose A20, the Zulu 3 is more comfortable for me and performs comparably at a lower price, with a much better warranty. The trade-up program is just a bonus, so when my Bose A20 (still under warranty) quit working, I traded it in for my most recent Zulu 3.
We have two airplanes and also have David Clark One-X and AKG headsets. The support for the David Clark has been excellent -- equal to past experiences with previous Lightspeed models, but ear seals won't stay put. AKG makes a nice headset but has gone out of the headset business. We have Zulu 3s in both pilot seats and older Zulus and a Sierra for passengers.
My pilot girlfriend has an almost perfect track record of breaking every headset she uses. After over a year, she has met her match in the Zulu 3. The armored cord protects them when she slams it in a door, and the sturdy metal construction stands up to the rest of her demanding use.November 26, 2018Durability5 / 5Reliability5 / 5Performance5 / 5Ease Of Use5 / 5Value5 / 5Would You Recommend?YesExcellent PurchaseI have used many ANR headsets and the value of the Lightspeed Zulu compared to the other major brand is better due to it's similar features and lower priceNovember 7, 2018Purchased
2 months agoDurability5 / 5Reliability5 / 5Performance5 / 5Ease Of Use5 / 5Value5 / 5Would You Recommend?YesI was a little apprehensive because I had heard reviews saying that the headband might be a little tight. I have a larger and more round head, so I was expecting some discomfort. While I have not worn the headset for an extended flight as of yet, I found the adjustment easy to expand enough where I do not feel any pressure, and do not anticipate any problems. The noise canceling function is excellent, and I would recommend this headset as a quality product. The cord is indeed as advertised, being very strong and durable.November 2, 2018Purchased
