Portable airband radio with built-in headset plugs

An emergency is no time to be searching for an adapter for your handheld radio. The PJ2 is the only handheld aviation radio that can be connected to standard aviation headset plugs (twin PJ plugs) without using a special adapter. The simplicity of this radio makes it a pilot favorite: just turn it on, type in a frequency, and plug in your headset. No menus, no wires, and no adapters. Dedicated volume and squelch knobs are easy to adjust, even in turbulence, and the extra-large screen and keypad make a big difference during an emergency.

Features:

  • Standard GA headset jacks on the top (patent pending)
  • Oversized screen
  • Large keypad
  • Last frequency button
  • 20 scannable memory channels
  • USB type-C plug for backup power
  • Backlit screen and keypad
  • Standard BNC antenna connector
  • Transmit/receive indicator light
  • Quick access button for NOAA weather
  • Fast scan with 25 KHz spacing

Here’s why we think it’s the perfect backup radio.

1. No adapter cables.

An emergency requires quick action; there is no time to be fumbling with adapter cables and small plugs. The PJ2 eliminates this hassle, with standard PJ jacks (compatible with the vast majority of general aviation headsets) built right into the radio. Simply unplug your headset from the panel and plug it into the PJ2 - now you can talk to Air Traffic Control while enjoying the noise cancelling features of your headset without extra wires. If your headset has a single, 6-pin plug (often called a LEMO plug), simply use any standard twin plug-to-LEMO adapter cable. Patent pending.

2. Simple to use.

An emergency is also no time to be reading an instruction manual, so the PJ2 is designed to be dead-simple to operate. There are dedicated knobs for squelch and volume, so just twist the knob to turn the radio on. There are no menus or frequency bands to manage either. Simply type in a frequency to start communicating.

The PJ2 is also designed for one-handed operation, so you can fly with your left hand and communicate with your right. A large push-to-talk button is easily accessed by your index finger, and a handy last frequency button makes it easy to flip back and forth between approach and tower. The large screen is backlit for easy viewing at night, and the oversized keypad is easy to use in turbulence. Everything has been optimized for pilot-friendly operation.

3. AA batteries.

Rechargeable batteries are a fact of life these days, but while they are excellent for devices you use every day (like a smartphone), they are not the best option for a backup radio. Because it’s likely your radio will sit in your flight bag for weeks between uses, we prefer easy-to-find AA batteries for the PJ2. With a shelf life measured in years, you can load up the radio and rest assured you’ll have power when you need it. No need to worry about charging another battery.

Our team of pilots went a step further, though. There’s also a USB-C plug on the right side of the radio for additional flexibility. While this won’t charge the battery pack (the AAs aren’t rechargeable after all), it will power the radio. Since USB-C is an increasingly popular connector, found on everything from iPads to ADS-B receivers, you don’t have to carry another obscure charging cable. Just plug it into your cigarette lighter or portable battery pack and turn the PJ2 on.

4. Low price.

The best backup radio is the one you have with you, so we believe value is another important feature. We’ve worked hard to make the PJ2 a rugged, reliable radio, but all while keeping the price under $200. The only thing we cut was unnecessary features - not quality. There’s also nothing extra to buy since the PJ2 comes with an AA battery pack, antenna, and belt clip. And remember there is no adapter cable to buy.

In the box:

  • PJ2 COM radio
  • Alkaline battery pack
  • Antenna
  • 100-240V wall plug
  • USB-A to USB-C adapter cable
  • Belt clip
  • Pilot’s guide

With the multitude of backup GPS options, what pilots really need from a radio is a solid COM-only radio – not another complicated computer to manage. The ability to unplug your headset from the panel that just went dark and plug it into an easy-to-operate portable radio is a potential lifesaver. It really is the ultimate backup radio for pilots.

Great radio at a fair price.
Simple to operate and has good range. Ive had it for about two weeks and use it daily with no issues at all. On the ground I get a good signal 10 miles out. Haven’t tried it in the air yet. I think it’s fairly priced and would have no problem recommending to a friend.

Great handheld radio!
Well built, Solid feel in the hand, Switches have a clean and solid feel. Screen is easy to see in bright light situations. The battery cover is a little wonky with the connections when you reinstall the cover, watch out for the contacts, they bend easily, other than that its a good solid radio. Easy to program channels and recall entered memory channels. Good sound quality also.

Happy with purchase
Received and unboxed yesterday. Setting up was very easy and I managed without having to read the instructions, it was that simple.
The Unit was easy to navigate, and I like the big easy to read screen.
Turned out heavier than I thought, but only a minor issue.
As others have pointed out, there is a concern around the flimsy plastic battery box clips, and i was worried about them snapping as I fitted the case loaded with batteries. It’s a tight fit.
Once turned on, reception was clear and I was able to receive ATIS indoors at home from a few miles away. Headset reception was good, and overall, the Unit is well designed and easy to operate without fiddling and connecting adapters etc.

Lost my alternator and radios on Sunday. Radio saved my butt.
Needed it first flight.
I've been having alternator problems lately and after the 3rd stint with my mechanic I thought it was resolved. I flew myself and 2 buddies to Bimini in the bahamas this weekend for some fising and purchased the radio just incase. The flight there was fine, but on the flight home I shredded my alternator belt and had to switch to the handheld radio. I will be buying a new alternator this week and I will never fly without the handheld radio again.

If using a headset, and no external PTT, when the transmit button is pressed which mic is active? The one in the radio or the one in the headset?
" " on Sep 27, 2019
BEST ANSWER: You can use the mic on the headset.
The squelch is causing me a problem. I set it but then it trips and I hear constant static but no incoming signal. Turning the squelch all the way up will not it it to quit. Static noise stays continuous. Turning the radio off and on and the squelch up and down and finally works normal for a few minutes then does it again. Happens in the house and in the plane. Really annoying?
Scott H on Dec 25, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Went to take the antenna off to send it back and discovered the connector that threads to the end of the antenna was almost apart. I threaded it back on and put the antenna back on and so far it has not done it again. Will try it for awhile but it looks like the connector is not assembled very good.
Having an issue with the squelch. Turn the squelch and set it. Sporadically it will cut in with static while receiving no signal. You can turn the squelch all the way up and can not get it to quit. It will stay that way without cutting back until the radio is turned off and on and the squelch turned up and down several times over and over until it finally resorts to normal until it does it all over again?
Scott H on Dec 23, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Must have a faulty one, I have no trouble with mine! It seems to work great all the time
When will stock be available?

It has a one year warranty.

BEST ANSWER: We charge when the item is shipped.
Does it have Bluetooth?
Ellen Y on Oct 16, 2019
BEST ANSWER: This radio does not have Bluetooth.
Can you hook this to a com system?
A shopper on Sep 17, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Yes, it would be possible to connect this to your comm system.

Can it tune 0.833 mHz bands?
BaldEagle79 on Sep 2, 2019
BEST ANSWER: No, it does not have 8.33 spacing.
Is there a 8.33 version available for europe?
Michelmarc on Sep 2, 2019
BEST ANSWER: No, it does not have 8.33 spacing for use in Europe.
How about using NiCad batteries with it?
A shopper on Sep 2, 2019
BEST ANSWER: You can use a backup battery to power the radio. We wanted to keep the design simple.
If we want to use rechargeable cells, is there an internal recharging circuit from the USB C DC input? Or do we have to remove the batteries and use an external recharger? I’m not complaining about your decision to use non-rechargeables, just wondering about options. Overall looks like a nice redesign of a n excellent portable radio.
A shopper on Aug 31, 2019
BEST ANSWER: You would need to remove the rechargeable batteries. We do not recommend using rechargeable batteries. The radio has a power source via a USB connection as well.
I had same issue as the guy below with PJ2 not working off battery pack. Then I realized I had left off one small panel on battery pack when I went to install the (6) AA batteries. Once I saw that panel and installed it, everything worked fine. It was very easy to set that small panel aside and forget about it till I retraced my steps. I had already called Sporty's about the issue, so I called back and cancelled the replacement battery pack that they were sending out. Adding question mark to make system happy?
B E on Dec 23, 2019
I am trying to use the PJ2 hooked up to a sigtronics intercom and David Clark H10 13.4 headsets. I am having an issue with a loud squeal feeding back and transmitting out. I can change the squeal by moving the headset around in different areas?
Scott H on Dec 23, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Was feedback. Simply unplugging the headset and rerouting the cables and replugging it back in seems to have made it go away.
I just received my PJ2. I'd like to provide dedicated external power through USB C. What is the maximum input voltage allowed?
Sam Strohl on Dec 8, 2019
BEST ANSWER: The radio at the USB port requires 5VDC and 2.4 amps.
Love the simple design and built in jacks, but, not being rechargeable and not being able to power from 12v makes this unit useless to me, is there plans to make a different model with these options?
A shopper on Sep 30, 2019
BEST ANSWER: The unit can be powered from a USB port. Our 12 volt USB charger item 8022A will provide power to the unit via the included USB cable.
side-tone; Is the volume level adjustable? If so, how do you adjust the level?
Don Q. on Feb 20, 2020
